I took this for granted until some friends were astounded by hearing it on my own system. The track started out with a skateboarder in a halfpipe. The right to left is always obvious, but they were amazed to hear how deep the pipe was.

I'm constantly re-adjusting level between albums and sometimes for each track. Imaging - one of my favourite tracks is The Jacques Loussier Trio playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The drums, superbly played by Andre Arpino, display width, depth and height variations, especially on track 3 (L 'Autunno ) It's a very good recording from Telarc, better than many around today. I don't expect this effect on every album but when you get such a good recording it's truly satisfying.

Even "big mono" recordings like Miles Davis' Bags Groove and Louis Prima's Wildest Show In Tahoe can project a sense of height even in a well-sorted plain vanila two- channel stereo set-ups. Vinyl based systems with a VDH Grasshopper equipped front end excells at this without any help from Dolby Atmos digital processing.

Soundstage height is not as easily attained as width and depth. It's an amazing effect though when a system pulls it off, you need very good speakers usually.

Good speakers, yes, though not necessarily expensive ones. I first noticed it with my Monitor Audio MA16 bookshelf speakers, which were budget-priced at the time, and my Canon S-35s are pretty capable too.

Correct, look at vertical measurements from Stereophile, many speakers have very erratic behavior above/below the reference axis. It’s not technically an aspect of a good speaker necessarily. A cheap coax speaker will have better soundstage height than many multi-thousand dollar speakers.

A guy I knew years ago said more or less the same thing to me. Higher-end audio is just a waste of money and time. I invited him to bring a cd he liked and play it on my system. He sat there with his mouth hanging open and said later he was amazed. He also said that he was not bringing over any more of his cd's as he found that listening to the cd he had played on my system anywhere else just was not the same anymore. Never made another comment about my spending money on my audio system being a waste of time anymore.

1:23 it's not exclusive to high-end audio. properly designed, any system should be capable of such magic trick (but it's not magic). this whole soundstage thing is more of a matter of source material. read something scientific about it and you'll see it's actually really simple. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_localization

We perceive height information when sounds reflect off the top of our ears, the helix. This creates a comb filter effect that alters the frequency response of a sound in the 4khz to 8khz region. If a sound is perceived as coming from above then the sound must have a boost in the 8khz region, assuming you have average size ears. For a sound system to convey an illusion of height it only has to reproduce the 4k to 8k region with enough resolution to be convincing to our brain of the illusion. Vinyl does a better job at this illusion than digital audio because the quantization errors inflicted on the low-level high harmonics in music tend to be large enough to destroy this illusion.

Tbh honest I have only experienced a vertical soundstage on systems where the distance between the tweeter and midrange drivers is further apart, and your ears are positioned such that they are halfway between both drivers. On systems where the drivers are spaced closely, you can only get this affect near field. Regardless, soundstage height and depth are not contained in the recording itself but are (desirable) illusions that can be achieved with proper setup.

The volume advice Paul talks about at the end of this clip holds true for bands in live venues too. Bands usually do their soundcheck in an empty venue. Then the room fills up with people and everything sounds different.

Definitely height and down depth information can be extracted from a 2-track sound source. It takes either a very high end system, or, decoded using DSP. Some receivers over the years have included two over head speakers as an option.

I thought that toe-in controlled with width of the singing voice, and speaker tilt controlled the height. If raising the volume makes it sound like the singers mouth is much larger than it should be, it's likely that your speakers are not toed-in enough.

Where they point effects many things. Not really what your pointing out though. If you hang them high ofcourse the sound comes from above but the acoustical image should still be placed at the mormal hight. I know it wont really also because of many room related factors. Try some pillows on the first wall reflections to your listening position and you will know whats discussed here.

Pulling your speakers out from the rear walls helps significantly. Not all speakers have great imaging( depth wise). Much also depends on the electronics used too! There are high end manufacturers who place little merit on imaging but they usually excel in other areas though, imaging is not necessarily the holy grail.

paul, i have to agree wholeheartedly about the CORRECTVOLUME setting for each recording and i thank you for giving me the tool for adusting that. the size of the soundstage. i KNEW about the correct volume and a friend i had (now deceased) talked about it and would prove it by playing a selection at just the right volume. i sort of think that the right volume is reached when the phase angles of the signal match what they were at live playback level during recording. at least that's part of it. what do you think? ...hifitommy
