The only issue that i can think of is starter motors fail very regularly. Motor it's self tough as nails. Probably could source a brushless customised replacement and never ever think about starters ever again

Built on the omc power head nope it was a great engine and way better cdi system.

I had a 115 and it was a very smooth engine and relatively quiet for a carbed two stroke. Compared to a mercury 2+2 two stroke 125hp the Yamaha was so much better. The only advantage of the mercury was the fuel savings if you troll from idle to 1800 rpm.

I’m not even sure if the Yamahas are bad but I don’t like hpdis just because of the high amount of pressure. It just doesn’t seem to me that high pressure anything warrants reliability.

The hpdi is a great engine. Just a bot harder to work on and they got a bad rap. They don't have any inherent reliability issues. Yamaha's biggest issue was and still is corrosion. If they are bot cared for properly they will turn to dust. Mercury and omc never suffered that same fate due to better materials. Yamaha m, ho da, suzuki and tohatsu have always had corrosion issues due to cheaper material lacking in nickel
