Dr Joseph Wakshlag from Cornell University was one of the panellists in the hot topic presentations, alongside Dr Robert Backus, Missouri University, who together discussed the “Need, benefits, and risks of supplementing Vitamin D in dogs and cats”. Vitamin D is being found deficient in large swathes of the human population, testing and supplementation is increasing. Known to be associated with osteoporosis, and potential roles in cancer prevention and supporting the immune system in people, but what about our pets? What are the safe upper limits in their diets? How important is vitamin D is helping to support health or recovery from disease? With little understanding, pet nutritionists, researchers and scientists are starting to explore the impact of vitamin D.
