Excessive tearing is actually one of the signs and phase of dry eyes . The reason behind it is that our brain will stimulate the lacrimal gland to produce more tears to relieve the dryness from your eye. After that phase of tearing then comes the actual drying of the eyes.

@@nonsudunk it's probably about how the eye problems occur. It's not the screens itself, it's that you're looking at a close things and focusing too much for a long period of time. It really doesn't matter whether it's TVs, computers, phones, or books. The screen is not the problem, the behavior surrounding it is. ~~though if you spend enough time in front of screens that your parents are concerned, definitely should go check how much you actually are using it, and if your eyes get enough rest~~. I've been a full-time rather obsessed programmer (working many hours per day) for more than 40 years now, and I'm at the age which my eyesight would be fading anyway. Habits I picked up early which have probably helped have been: (1) to make a point to keep blinking fairly often, (2) make sure I have some light on the wall behind my computers lit up, so I'm not staring at a bright screen with a very dark background, (3) occasionally looking up and running my eyes along the intersection of the walls and the ceiling, and (4) Turning off overhead fluorescent lights while working on the computer. That fourth one is almost certainly not as important now as it was back when my computer monitors were CRT's. There are interactions between the flickering of fluorescent lighting and CRT refresh rates which many people will not notice, but which add to the strain on your eyes.

Thanks for your full and easy explanation! With all my respect, I can't agree with you completely. The one source of pain in the eyes is the way how GPU renders a picture on a screen. I can easily use my laptop from 2018 and my iPhone SE (1 generation), but none from laptops from 2023 (windows laptops and Macs) are not comfortable for me. Now I hurt my eyes badly with a modern laptops testing and I feel so much pain that I can't use my iPhone 13 and a laptop from 2021. But a laptop from 2018 and iPhone SE can be used now 24/7 without any eye strain. How can we explain that? Besides you should consider the PWM technology that is used in most OLED displays now and its harmful affection on focusing muscles. After a week of using MacBook Pro m2, my eyes lost the ability to focus at mid and long-range distances. And this symptom is completely gone after switching to other devices that don't use PWM at all. My eyes completely explored 3 times last year and it's 100% healthy. Your point that the only users are responsible for their computer eye syndrome development, but in reality, the computer manufacturer also does a lot of things that also increase the load on your eyes

I face quite an extreme amount of eye strain but that's probably due to prolonged computer use. I do hesitate to get my eyes tested though. I know I am not exactly 6/6 but I see well enough. I just don't want my eyes to get used to glasses but eventually if the strain remains at that level, I might have to. I have combated it partially by using the techniques you outlined: distance (probably too much distance in my case), viewing angle, using paper printouts, minimal phone use, using paper to write on in case I just am thinking and am not sure about what to write and only being on screen when I really need to type, and using audio as much as I can. My productivity might be better with glasses, they probably will be mild correction, but my morale will suffer a lot and I will face productivity loss from managing a new accessory.

I've been a heavy computer user for 40 years. At 48 I have accelerated presbyopia which started around 44. I now only use my "normal" far sighted glasses for driving these days. I have to squint (smaller aperature) to read with these normal glasses. I noticed this week, that while tired I struggle to focus on my phone or text on the TV. Might be time for an upgrade. Since starting to use "reading glasses" for the computer, I have also tended to make the screen scale and font size much larger and sit back away from the screen. Until I started using them, I had a tendency to hunch up close to the screen with my chin propped on my hand.... which didn't do wonders for my neck or wrists, which are also showing signs of acclerated "wear and tear". My GP put it to me, regarding occupational health risks, "Well, the lads working on the roads don't feel it in their 20's either, but they do feel it in the 40s 50s and 60s."

For more then 10 years I actually had a Cathode-ray tube at about 8h back then I would get a headache but my vision never got bad in any way shape or from. I always surpise eye doctors by how well I can see whenever I have to take a medical exam for a job. I do have a lot of friends with eye problems and what I found that I did different then them is at night I stayed on my computer with the lights on and most of them like to sit in the dark at the computer. So I guess the lesson is don't stare into the only source of light or you will damage your eyes just like you would if you looked into the sun or straight at a light bulb for a while.

When you sit at a computer for hours on end, not only are you harming your eyes, but you are also harming your muscles, particularly muscles in your shoulder and neck. The posture people sit in is usually causing more harm to the body than the computer screen is causing to the eyes... I have peripheral vision with it, but without glasses (and sometimes with) I cannot read with only my right. A few years back I started being unable to see far away, and if I really tried to focus I would start seeing double. It is like my right eye won't collaborate with my left. I talked to my optometrist and got a referral to the eye doctor, but since it is only long distance (think driving on the highway) they were unable to test it. I also cannot see neon signs or the moon when it's bright anymore. It's just blurry or double with chromatic aberration (you've ever seen the moon and its orange and blue twin next to it? I have. Frequently). I'm really sad about it.

Very interesting I always wondered if using a computer really did harm your eyes, as I spend all day staring at a computer and all evening staring at different computer yet never had any issues whatsoever. Extremely interesting that it’s not the computer itself per-say but more how we interact with them. Seems I accidentally have the optimal set up, and I have the attention span of a hyperactive goldfish so every 20 seconds my attention has accidentally drifted away from my screen anyway, so maybe this explains why I’ve never had an issue.

I was wondering about the 20-20-20 rule: - Is looking out a window count? How unobstructed should your view out the window be? Clear view or make sure there is nothing around like a shelf of plants? If the window is dirt does that matter? - Instead of viewing something 20 feet away, can you just close your eyes for a period of time?
@Dragon20942

I think it depends on focal distance. So long as your eyes are focused on something that is approximately 20 ft away, you're good. So looking out a window counts. Make sure your focus is such that any obstructed parts are blurry rather than the things 20 ft away. I imagine you can close your eyes as well, but if you focus your eyes as if they're staring at something 20 ft away, it should provide a similar benefit.

As a gamer and software developer. I spend upwards of 14 hours aday infront of multiple computer monitors. And my optician has said my eye sight has only been getting better.

I switched to very wide screen at home and as I look left-right more I noticed that eyes likely get better lubrication :)

Almost all my classmates wears glasses these days. When we were in school none of them wore any spectacles as they didn't have any issues with their eyes. I am one of the only guy among my friends who doesn't wear any. But I might start wearing reading glass with blue light filter.

Does is it true that low blue filters for screen monitors helps to reduce eye fatigue?

Very informative. Interesting how your accent is so good that the mistakes in the sentences you build sound so weird.

I've had eye strain for the last 5 years 24/7, it's sort of like tunnel vision at times with sore eyes. It's very disorientating. Although we don't have solid evidence that screens can damage eyes there are now a large amount of growing cases with unexplained eye conditions on forums and Reddit that all use screens.

Sounds more liek survivor bias to be honest. Obviously everyone reporting unexplained eye conditions on forums and Reddit uses some kind of screen - otherwise it would be impossible to post on those sites

I hear your point that it's not the light from the monitor - However this hasn't been my experience. Blue-light blocking amber glasses have made a huge difference for me. It was like near instant relief the first time I tried them.

I cant speak as to the truth of what youre saying. Maybe look into some papers/studies on the matter? You could be experiencing a placebo, or you could learn even more on the matter

@@jorisheemskerk268 If people weren't strained by the light from computer monitors, dark mode wouldn't be so popular.

Hi Antonio, interesting video topic. Does long-term incomplete blinks result in cornea damage typically? And can that be healed naturally? Thanks for sharing

Good question! ANY damage long term is never good. And the most natural way of healing it is prevention + routinely doing the best for the eyes (i.e. blinking more frequently + hot compresses)

Hi Antonio & thanks for the awesome & very informative educational video. What type of lenses (brands I mean) that you do recommend for customers to prevent them having the so called Computer vision syndrome?

Everything nice, but you didn't mention the answer to the question "Do computers cause damage to the eyes? | Optometrist Explains" so what is it, is it a permanent damage or not? AFAIK also book fanatics from the history often had glasses, so most likely its not just screens or eye strain also what is the mechanics of the damage then, is the eye lens being damaged? is it the eye shape changing? because my eyes are getting worse basically every year and I'm well after 18yo, software engineer and I didn't get the answer to the question in the video title...

Short answer-no, at least not for me. 40 years of 4-16 hours per day of computer CRT, LED, LCD screen exposure and I still have 20-20.

You did not directly answering the title of your question, as a "fast watcher" I wanted a "yes or no" answer to this kind of video title.
