I used have dog she unfortunately passed away her name was keynine. but ive learned if pet them gentley and speak in soft voice she will slowly have better dreams and if you put one of there favorite toys beside them they will be calm. I hope that helps.💕

I have noticed that all of the dogs I have had in my lifetime have dreamed, both good and bad. The dog I live with now, Rowdy Boy, is a vivid dreamer. I'm happy to share that he rarely has bad dreams, but when I perceive that he is, I usually just very gently pet his head and talk to him in a low soothing voice. He usually comes right around. My husband's last dog, Daisy, was a dreamer too. She was having a pretty violent one on the couch one day, and rolled herself off of it. She woke up snarling and her eyes were pure black!! It took my husband at least 30-45 seconds of calmly calling her name, for her to come out of it. I swear for about 30 seconds she looked like she was going to attack him. It was quite scary. She could get into rages and be quite hard to handle. I realize now, that she needed some professional training. She was hopelessly devoted to my husband. As was I. Blessed be Sweet Baby. He has been gone now for almost 5 years.

I had a rescue dog that experienced nightmares every so often. The best way I found to calm her down was to gently lay my hand on her and speak in a soft voice. The nightmare would then stop and I wouldn't even have to wake her.

My puppy has nightmares occasionally and recently he has had them two days in a row now. He is kinda loud and sometimes he will kick his feet. Other times he will cry out. I felt bad so I pet him and he stopped crying. I don't know what he is crying about because he does not live an abusive life and he is well taken care of.

My pup has been abused and I suspect thats why she has nightmares so often 😔 When she does and she’s really upset, I’ll carefully and really slowly put my hand on her and speak in a soft voice with her favorite positive words~ (good girl, I love you, walkies, etc) Just barely loud enough for her to hear and walk up enough to relax :)

When Greyhound Sal came home to me at age 2 (he was trained to race, yet never made it to a track [thankfully]), he seemed to be running in his dreams - gallop formation. His disposition is sweet and a little goofy. Not aggressive. Once, I noticed he was twitching and whimpering in his sleep while he was laying next to me. I reached down to pet his exposed belly and to tell him, "baby, it's oka…" Yikes, in 1 second's time, he made this guttural hell-sound I'd never heard from him before, curled around, and did a one-and-done chomp on my "soothing, petting" forearm. In retrospect, really uninformed. Even though in our house he was safe, whatever he was dreaming about made him feel threatened and my reaching down to his belly quickly enacted the fight response. He seemed as startled as I after the chomp. Now, I use a neutral voice tone if I think he is having a nightmare: "Sal, you are here, you are safe, mom is close by." He may not wake, entirely, yet the tone of voice may help.

Thanks for sharing your story about Sal. Not waking a traumatized dog from a nightmare might be particularly wise since they can have rouble relating at the best of times. When they are disorientated, it can be even more difficult.

Animals are just like us I don't understand why so many people don't understand that they get sick just like us dream just like Us good and bad. have feelings just like us just because they're smaller than us walk on all four and are furry does not mean that they don't go through the same stuff we do.

Yes, sadly. I’ve recently adopted a 10 year old Westie. His first human Mom died about three months ago. Then he came to live with me. And, though I do all I can to make him happy, he still has nightmares at night. I do as you say just stroke him tenderly and speak softly to him. I just wish I could know that he understands he will see his first set of human parents again.

I just rescued a 8 month old puppy from another state. The only background I know is that he was not treated very nicely. Last night he screamed and cried like he was being tortured. This went on for a minute before I gently woke him up. He had tears pouring down his face. I just held him the rest of the night. It is unimaginable what happened to this puppy. I need to do something about this, but I don't know what to do.

Yes, specially lately he has woken up screaming three times in the last few weeks. He woke me up and left me thinking what could be wrong. Once he wakes up, he seems to be fine and soon goes back to sleep. So, I am keeping an eye to see where this situation leads. He is now 14 but in great health, so I don't really see any reason for this. He has always had somewhat of an "active" dream pattern but nothing like this.

My dog started having more vivid nightmares three weeks ago when we had to put down our older dog, she was her mum. She shakes, "runs" and whimpers and her heart beats really fast. I think it's clearly part of her mourning process, but it is difficult to watch.

When my dog sleeps and has nightmares, his whole body just junks flinches or jumps like a hiccup and he make like a bark-ish whimper type of noise. Sometimes it's just the body flinching, but when the whimper barks occur, it's kinda concerning.

My dog was a rescue. He was in the home of his previous owner who shot himself. He was in that home for 2 weeks by anyone found the body. Then he was in a humane society for almost a yr by i came along. No one wants to adopt a 6yr old germanshepard with trauma issues! Well I did and we are inseparable! But it is obvious when he is having memory dreams or nightmares. But I'm almost always there to make sure its my face and loving hands he sees and feels when he wakes. As I have never ever scolded him or punished him I know he isn't upset w me. Sounds strange I'm sure but my rescue was straight from puppy jail the most well behaved dog I've ever had in my 40 yrs of life!

If a dog can have happy dreams, they also have bad dreams, particularly if they had a traumatic experience or bad former life. I haven't seen my BCs have any bad dreams, but then again, I've never seen them sleep walking either. They did wag their tails and sometimes woofed in their sleep.

Had tons of dogs before but my current one is, by far, a BIG TIME dreamer! Almost every sleep he has results in a dramatic dream. Flopping around, kicking vigorously, shaking, LOUD whimpering and wailing, long steady screams. He wakes us up from our sleep. Sometimes it's cute but frightening. Despite what you suggest, we (gently) wake him by petting him or calling his name. He's fine with it and either goes back to sleep or stays awake. He's a very happy dog and doesn't have an ounce of aggression in his body. Trust me... he has NOTHING to be stressed about!
