I'm very happy to see someone else who perfectly mirrors my opinions on .40 S&W and 10mm. I love 10mm, but I despise .40 S&W. .40 S&W is a round that can't commit to being anything, and instead is just mediocre at everything, but still thinks it's smarter than .45 and 9mm. It's just pretentious. 10mm on the other hand is clean, powerful, but also balanced and compact. Like you said, it's like a .357 in a smaller, sleeker package. It's great. This video made me feel very validated.

I think that if .40 had come first, before 9mm and .45 ACP, it would have been just as good a "standard" pistol round as either of the other two. 10mm is in my opinion a little too powerful for most handgun shooters, like .357, but also like .357, it's glorious in a pistol-caliber carbine or SMG. That little more power, with a longer barrel and a stock, and all of a sudden it comes into its own.

As someone who owns a Taurus Raging Judge (45LC/.410/.454 Casull), its fun... but its a toy. It's not something I would ever trust my life to, let alone the life of anyone I care about. Out of the judge or governor the spread is egregious past anything more than 25 yards as the rifling in the barrels impart centrifugal force onto the shot. out of a smooth bore barrel with a longer length to allow for the rounds to reach better velocity (like from a .410 shotgun rather than a pistol length barrel), it wouldn't be a terrible round but there are DEFINITELY better options out there. TLDR: a .410 pistol is fun... like really fun (dragons breath rounds!!!) but it is absolutely not a practical firearm... but its fun.

I know exactly what you mean about .45 ACP. The recoil IS more than 9mm and .40 S&W, but it feels a lot gentler. .40 S&W especially is pretty unpleasant to shoot because the recoil is very snappy and you feel those vibrations a lot more in my experience, whereas .45 I feel like I could shoot all day (though I don't have the money for that)

I swear there has to be something to do with grip shape and the hand that's messing with people's impression of a lot of calibers because the only handgun I've shot that really felt uncomfortable that wasn't a 12 gauge bp pistol or some other monster hunter magnum was a double action .357 that my cousin had. Trigger was so heavy it blistered your finger after a few cylinders.

Some caliber/firearm combinations suck, like my friends ultralight 300 win mag, but my other friends target 300 WM is pleasant to shoot. For me, even a lightweight 308 isn't pleasant, but a subcompact 10mm is no big deal; I have quite strong hands.
@ZeroSuitSamo

All three major intermediat rounds, and those monster big game rounds, but no 308? Interesting... also, I've never fired a modern 45-70 loading because I'm in a similar situation as your Schofield: i don't want to blow up my trap door Springfield haha. But I can tell you the downloaded 45-70 meant for cowboy action shooting and the like is perfectly pleasant to shoot. And this is coming from someone who is not afraid to say something hurts to shoot, for example: my Chiappa Rhino bites/stings when shooting full power 357 magnum. I still shoot it, but honestly, I prefer 38 special, which in that gun feels like shooting blanks haha

Consolidate down to calibers you can buy easily in quantities larger than 100, except for maybe 10mm. .40S&W is basically dead already but if you own A 10mm you could justify stocking some .40. 5.45X39 is going to get expensive or vanish from the U.S. market soon short of unprecedented economic cooperation with Russia soon, IIRC the Poles and Bulgarians do NOT use 5.45 anymore.. "Fudd" calibers are largely pointless and overly expensive.................. right back to my earlier CONSLIDATE comment.
