Hi Alice I was trying to find a diff video of yours that popped up on my KZitem video earlier today… Can’t find it right now but Thank You so much for all of your helpful tips and information! As a woman who has had more than one miscarriage And also a very complex history of trauma- including sexual assault. So these topic videos are so very helpful. I cannot Thank You enough! My hopes for the future when I become pregnant again and (fingers crossed) be able to carry to term and face labor and birth that any and all of my providers and the team and specifically my support people will be able advocate for me. I say this to keep in mind that as history for me has shown that “in the moment” My trauma responses can and have taken me hostage and so I remind myself now that my support team need to be able to speak on my behalf for the times when I am unable to communicate.

I did not get any cervical exams. I had one in the very beginning of my pregnancy and the next one I had was when I got to the hospital to see where I was at. I don’t thing the obgyn liked how stubborn I was with being in power with my pregnancy and birth. I definitely took charge and told them what I wanted, how things were going to happen, and made sure they knew I was in charge! My body, my baby, my informed decisions! Stand firm ladies! After cervical exam i had bleeding and my waters broke before labour. They induced me with oxytoxin right away, even though i or my baby had no other complications. It all ended up with emergency c section coz of the heart rate of the baby. Oxytocin causes painful contractions that can lead to suffering of the baby. They didnt let me go in labour on my own. I honestly sonetimes wonder if doctors really know anything about labour.

Thank you for telling the truth! Im pregnant again 35 weeks and my doctor said she was planning to induce me at 37 by membrane stripping. Its the 2nd doctor i've been dealing with and it looks like cervical exams and membranes stripping is very common. She denies all the risks. Why inducing someone who has no problems with pregnancy though? My baby is going to be bigger than normal about 4 kg but thats not a good reason to induce someone, is it?

Came to your video because I was recently seen by a regular doctor who wanted to perform a cervical exam on me at 37 weeks, and I didn’t really understand why. This is my first pregnancy and I’m getting my care from a team of midwives who do not perform any cervical exams during pregnancy. I had come to a hospital to see a doctor for side pain that I now believe is from kidney stones. Apparently they wanted to first check if I was actually in labor because “some people have really bad back labor” even though I had not had any regular contractions and I had been suffering from the pain for two days already. I felt that the exam was pointless because I would know if were in labor. I’m really glad I declined the exam. What cemented my decision was a quick Google search about cervical exams and the risk of causing water to break.

I had my 2nd cervical check two days ago at 38 weeks +2. Prior to the appointment I had no signs of labor or changes with my body. A student did the check and was unsure of where my cervix was (extremely uncomfortable) then my OB checked and it was a little less discomfort but he had her go back and check to make sure she understood what he was describing. I felt like a Guinea pig…3 cervical checks at one appointment was so painful I couldn’t walk right the rest of the evening. Then I had heavy bleeding the entire night and next day which I went to labor and delivery to check out. I’m 3 cm dilated but after the check my baby has noticeably dropped and I’ve had many changes in discharge including a mild odor that was not there before.. nervous that this may have induced me when I had no signs of labor prior. I am denying any more checks until it is time and I will be expressing that I do not want any students in the exams or during delivery. Any thoughts??
@birthtoolbox
2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry that you had to go through those 3 office checks and I completely support your desire to deny furture cervical checks. The sure signs of labor are contractions that are coming regularly and that are longer stronger and closer together. Anything before that is your body preping for labor. The mild odor might be a concern, so I would alert your OB about that. Odor can indicate an infection and it's just a good idea to check that out if it persists. I am wishing you so much luck on your labor ahead!!

Does the cervical and Pelvic exams differ in being required? My husband and I are both very uncomfortable of the thought of both if it's before labor. My current (hospital) midwife is saying that it is a requirement and if we don't consent we have to sign a liability paper saying we refuse care from them!
@birthtoolbox

Hello Mo. Great question. Cervical exam and pelvic exam are the same things. Is your midwife requiring cervical exams before labor, during labor or both? Also, if you sign the paper, what does that mean? I don't believe they will withhold care.

I am new to your channel. Are there other procedures that are optional? Or can be done with different options? I had an attempted OB exam as a child and has scarred me. My mother has a paranoid personality and was convinced that I was being SA (I was not). Since then I have declined any kind of vaginal exam. I don't want to have children because of this reason. I am afraid of the procedures that involve child birth. I wish there was an easy answer.

This is a great question and I understand your concerns. All procedures should require your consent, including a cervical exam. I'm so sorry about your experience Cat. Many SA survivors have a difficult time with cervical checks. Thank you for the helpful video! I'm 38 weeks pregnant and have been declining cervical exams for the past three appointments. My OB and nurses want and encourage me strongly to get checked, but I really felt no need. (infection, emotional discouragement with number, possible water breaking) Also my OB and all of her nurses have long fake nails and I DO NOT feel comfortable with their fingers inserted!! I don't want to be rude to my OB who will be receiving my baby, but she really really wants me to get checked and pressures me to do so.. Do you have any advice on how I can wisely decline or get male OB with short nails if cervical exam is necessary for ANY medical reasons during my 39, 40 weeks cervical exams?
@birthtoolbox
4 жыл бұрын
Your reasons for not wanting to get checked are extremely valid. I can totally understand the hesitation with long nails as well. Yikes! My main advice for you is to stand your ground. You are the customer here. Cervical exams are not necessary prior to labor. They just ARE NOT. I would just say, I appreciate the offer for the exam, but I would like to decline. If they keep asking, just keep repeating that same phrase "I appreciate the offer, but I would like to decline". This is your body and you have every right to make this choice. Hi there, I’m 40 weeks +2 in my first pregnancy with a baby boy. My OB said if the baby doesn’t come by 41 weeks, which is next Monday, 4/4, she will have to send me to the hospital to be induced. I was able to get away with 1 cervical check before finding out that I didn’t have to consent to them, and then today I ended up having one done by my OB, which made me cry because it was so uncomfortable and painful and I found out I was 3cm dilated. After being monitored by her for my baby’s fetal heart rate and contractions, she said I had contractions every 6-8 minutes, but I couldn’t recognize that until she told me one was coming and it felt like a slight pinch and baby moving. Afterwards, she has me sent to Labor and Delivery to be monitored and tested further to see if my contractions were progressing or not. I was there for 2 hours, had 2 more cervical checks done (i dreaded them), but the last one was a tiny bit better because the doctor took her time and told me what she was doing before she did it…and ultimately, stated that it there wasn’t much progress and I was sent home. I’m praying to God the baby comes before next Monday and hope to have a short labor and delivery because those cervical checks are Horrible! If you have any advice to give, please share. Thanks and God bless you.

I just had my 33 week appointment today and my doctor said my strep b test will be next appointment and so will a cervical exam. I said how I’m going to be declining all cervical exams until I’m in labor and he really wants to do one before. I’ve done enough research to know that they are not necessary before hand. I don’t want to be “that patient” and have him not like me the rest of the time because I won’t get one, but I’m pretty adamant on not getting one. Also I have heard before that women can swab themselves for the strep B test, and when I said I’d prefer to do it myself he said absolutely not and that it’s stupid of a care provider to allow someone to do it themselves since it needs to be done correctly. Ugh. Why are there differing opinions on things like this?
