Sometimes I feel like I definitely need professional help to understand my mental health issues, but I always stop myself with thoughts like "I already know what they're about to say", "I can figure it out on my own" etc.

I was in talk therapy for three years from age 11-14 because of trauma and then I did a bit of a crash course of CBT in my senior year. I haven't found that talk therapy was very effective and I found it wholly uncomfortable because of my anxiety, but I really found someone giving me tools to work with was really helpful. I've also been diagnosed with anxiety and was given medication and I've found that to be very helpful in raising the floor of my anxiety so I'm not drowning in it.

I've been in counselling for 3 weeks once a week, and recently got the diagnosis depression, along with anxiety and anxiety attacks. My councillor will remiss me to a more advanced therapist because my case is so bad, but I'm glad I'm finally getting better.

I've recently started actively coming to terms with being non binary. Although health care systems mean it's so difficult to get a good psychologist/psychiatrist without a 6-month wait, like you said Ashley it is 1000% worth getting help (no matter what your history with mental health is). Thanks for the great vidoes :)

Therapy has completely changed my life. I am such a different person now compared to two years ago when I first started going to therapy regularly.

I've definitely been feeling depressed lately and thought about therapy, but I don't know how to get started and I feel scared to talk to someone I don't know about my problems. Anyways thanks for your videos Ashley you always make me feel less alone when it comes to these things 💜💛💙

It takes a while to build a relationship with your therapist, but it's a bit like starting a new friendship, you don't have to be at your absolute most vulnerable right away. It's a process

You know, not gonna lie, there have been times I've felt like I should go to therapy, but I've never ended up doing it for one excuse or another. Thanks for this video, I think I'll have a proper look into it tonight 😊

I agree with taking care of mental and emotional health like you would your physical health! I agree 100% that instead of turning to drugs or alcohol, you should go to therapy and work on specific issues. No, a therapist is not your friend or a support system for sure and ideally you’d be able to solve issues in your own eventually-however: if therapy is needed for specific issues- why not! Sometimes you can find subsidized or affordable counselling

I was going to free counseling at my school for a while but stopped because I was feeling better. Now about a month later I'm at a huge low point again. I should probably schedule more regular appointments. They were really helpful but a lot of shit happened in this week alone that I'm really struggling. I think I'm gonna schedule an appointment for next week...

It's always an ebb and flow in my experience. Sometimes you learn a new tool or skill that makes you feel unstoppable, only to come up on a different issue that you're facing a few weeks or months later. When you have a history of trauma, or when your life has a lot of highly stressful elements, it's important to be gentle with yourself. I'm glad that you're able to talk to someone :)

As a therapist I disagree with the idea of being in therapy all the time. Therapy is great when you're working on a specific problem, but I don't think it's particularly healthy to rely on it as your support system all the time. My aim for clients is always to enable them to look after themselves and build their own support systems, because they CAN do it themselves, whether that takes a few sessions or 2 years. It's always a good idea to take breaks from therapy to consolidate what you've learned.

I agree! By consistently, I didn't mean constantly. I think everyone has a natural resting place. For me, my issues and my life are such that counseling as a maintenance activity is incredibly useful. I agree however that the aim should be to empower, and that if you work through something and no longer need counseling than good for you!
