Thanks for the update. And not an easy video for you to make/record/upload I imagine. I totally understand your decision. I was thinking about you (+ your husband + dog cooper) when the Bucha massacre was uncovered and I am glad you managed to escape from there with your lives. I cannot imagine what you are going through and the emotions that you are feeling right now. I think it's very important to listen to your intuition, your gut feeling, be honest with yourself. Do what you must do, otherwise you can regret it later and get depressed. So I support you 100%. As for me, I will continue to learn Russian although quite frankly I do not feel like visiting Russia while that government remains in power. What can I say, I mainly listen to dissident "foreign agent" Russians on youtube now. Obviously not all Russian people are the same, I have definitely seen that, but even so, I am more likely to visit Ukraine now, when the war is over. But please not delete existing Russian videos. Even though I was not planning to learn Ukrainian, given the current situation, I will definitely remain subscribed. I only know one word of Ukrainian and that is "зараз" (now). Please start with core vocabulary.🙂

Before WW1, besides English, German was the most spoken language in USA. There were millions of German immigrants. However, when WW1 started it became frowned upon to speak German in public. I feel like Russian is going the same direction. I am from Ireland and enjoyed learning Russian for the past 5 months but it's hard for me to imagine the language being seen the same way again..this beautiful language has been tainted now from being associated with such horrible events and people.

I have been speaking Russian for 37 years. My wife is from Eastern Ukraine. She has relatives that basically only speak Ukrainian while she has mainly spoken Russian with a little Ukrainian mixed in. Now she is so upset with what is happening to her country, she has switched over to mainly Ukrainian broadcasts and is speaking more Ukrainian. It is almost now as if Russian is politically incorrect in our family. I have stared to learn Ukrainian and it is challenging learning to say the same words with the stress on a different part of the word. I am determined to become proficient in this language so I can speak it without having to switch to Russian. Мир вам от Бога Ника и желаю вам много успехов!

I'm so sad because you won't teach us Russian any more. I don't think Russian is a language that only Putin speaks. It's like saying that German is the language of Hitler and German should not be learned because of what Hitler did. I don't think you have to mix politics with language teaching. Look at Mexico, for example: we were a colony of Spain for 300 years but we still speak Spanish. Other countries like France and the US invaded México but not because of that we have stopped learning English or French. The US even took more than half of our territory! Any way I will miss your lessons a lot. I don't think the Russian language deserves to be judged only by Putin's actions. I hope you will teach us Russian again some day.

As I already said I don't blame the language itself, but I really blame such people. And if I want to focus on the language of my country it is my 100% right.

@@VERBA_SCHOOL So, probably you have got to abstain from using any European language since Europe pays everyday 1 billion euros for the fossil fuels (which is main source of income of this horrible war). And blaming Russians for paying taxes? Ehm.. If you don't pay taxes, you may end up in prison - I think it works in any civilized country , doesn't it? Not to mentioned huge number of people got in prison for supporting anti-war position in Russia, let alone the fact of the brainwashing propaganda existing in this country. You may use whatever language you want as you said, as well as any person who was subscribed to your channel may politely display their concern about the policy that you applied, since you have gained the number of subscribers teaching Russian.

I totally understand and respect your decision. My own students of Russian have expressed mixed feelings about learning Russian in the past few months… they feel uncomfortable, I suppose. As a Ukrainian-American from a Russian-speaking heritage, who learned Ukrainian not from home but from Ukrainian school , I understand the conflict deeply. What is most authentic? The language my mother spoke (Russian) or the language of my heritage country, which I learned as a teen in America? So complex!

I feel this in my soul. I also also born to a Russian speaking Ukrainian mother… and learnt Ukrainian (poorly) in school here. My Russian is fairly good, but my Ukrainian is maybe A2 with a lot of Russian grammar and vocabulary thrown in, and I feel like an imposter whenever I speak Ukrainian. And I feel very dissociated from my identity as a Russian speaker, and uncomfortable with that part of who I am.

I think it's true.. Most battles/conflicts eventually will end.. Some take a long time though.. But, Marco the thing we have to remember.. Is that the after affects (results,, consequences) on the people directly influenced by a conflict... Is not good. I mean think about it.. Even if it does finish... The economy will be influenced... There is usually a downwards trend for global economies.. And regular average people are the most affected... But, to be honest.. I enjoy Russian language too. Because of music.. I like songs with soothing melodies.. Usually Mezzo-Soprano vocal range.. Which is basically why I learn the language.. Nika has changed directions.. Moving forward with plans to transition her teaching language... Try watching previous lessons... Or... Search into other KZitem channels for lessons.. She is not the only teacher... Maybe U like Nika's teaching style/method.. But, there R other good teachers.. That could help U with the language U R trying to learn (Rus)... Nika understandably has changed directions... Good luck to U. I wish U the best. 🥰💛

I understand your decision, and I respect it. I am American, but living in Canada, and I started learning Russian partially because of the admiration for the culture, literature and some of its people. However, I don't admire the politics and the war, obviously, just as I don't admire the wars my country has been involved in. But despite that, I really want to keep learning Russian, because as you said, it's not the 'language's fault'. Also, I don't bear ill will towards the Russian people, as quite a few disagree with this. The only thing that these war-like people manage to do is humiliate the Russian history and culture. I would like to learn a bit of Ukrainian, as I am helping some of my Ukrainian friends here in Canada and I've also been helping my Ukrainian penfriend of 10 years over there (she managed to leave the country, fortunately) and would love to send them cards and try to communicate some ideas to them in their native language. I also happen to be a linguist very interested in Slavic languages, although I have mostly been working on Southern Slavic, and would like to shift to Eastern Slavic.

I achieved professorinal level in it but during my work life did not need it a lot but kept it as a hobby. After the events in 2008, 2014, and finally 2022, I started feeling very bad about it, even hearing that language. I decided to replace Russian with Ukrainian, just to show my full sympathy to Ukraine. I really enjoy your videos where you speak clear and slow Ukrainian, and not English that much. Привiт! I just wanted to say that I totally understand your decision & I will gladly remain a subscriber of your channel, even though I am only a recent one. I’ve always been fascinated by the former USSR; especially with both the similarities and differences between the various republics that exist today. I’m 23 but I’ve taught myself basic words and phrases (mainly in русский) & even кириллица over the years. However, it’s only recently (at the beginning of ill-fated February) that I’ve started learning Russian properly by taking a course. Even I, a guy from the Netherlands with no Slavic blood whatsoever, have struggled with motivating myself & even wondered at times whether or not I wanted to continue learning the language-I can’t even imagine what it must’ve been like for Russian-speaking Ukrainians such as yourself. Personally, I’ve decided to continue with my studies as I feel it would be a shame to stop. Furthermore, what better way to bridge the gap between peoples by speaking their language? I obviously am well-aware of the fact that I alone cannot end this genocidal war, but I will do my part to talk to as many people as possible, both within and outside of Russia, to connect with people & hopefully leave a mark of peace, love & understanding on this planet. Long stories aside, I have decided that the next language I want to learn is Ukrainian. Not only because I want to, but because I feel like I owe it to the Ukrainian people. That is why I will remain a subscriber, as I cannot wait to embark on this journey of learning украïньска мова from your videos. Eventually, I would like to come to Ukraine and learn the language at your language school. War is absolutely horrible and there’s nothing good about it, but I do think an outcome of this war is that Ukrainians will rise from the ashes, the language will be rejuvenated, and the country will be reborn. I surely hope so. Слава Украïнi 💙💛🇺🇦

Hi Nika, I believe you are making a very good decision here, and am looking forward to see the first lessons of the Ukrainian language appear on your channel. I was studying the Russian language as a hobby. But for some time now I have been thinking of studying Ukrainian instead. I also really hope to be able to visit Ukraine soon, and then it would be great to also know some of the language, to put it into practice.

I look forward to learning Ukrainian from you! Your Russian videos have been enormously helpful to me in recent years as I've studied Russian to the point of becoming a confident speaker, able to enjoy Russian literature. (By the way, I'm an American teaching Spanish in a high school in Warsaw.) But since the invasion began I've felt it difficult to summon enthusiasm to speak Russian, and I've started to read simple texts in Ukrainian. This might be a bit crazy, as I already have some problems with Russian/Polish interference, particularly when I speak one language right after the other, but I can't help trying a bit of Ukrainian, particularly as I find myself surrounded by Ukrainians in Warsaw. Who knows how far I'll get. Anyways, good look with the re-branding. Also, by the way, I'm loving

I am currently learning Ukrainian (after learning Russian since last year) and found your channel through a collaboration where you compared Ukrainian to Russian. I teach 2nd grade and my school has had an influx of Ukrainian refugees recently, including a precious student who joined my class last week, so I have decided to make the switch myself. He’s teaching me Ukrainian while I teach him English 🙂 Duolingo and Google translate have been a great help too. When I visited your channel after seeing the collab, I was admittedly disappointed that the majority of your videos were teaching Russian, as I was looking for Ukrainian videos, so I am super excited that you will be teaching Ukrainian now! 😊 Looking forward to your new content! 🇺🇦💙💛💙🇺🇦 F YES! I rarely comment on KZitem but I have to say that I'm so excited for you, and also feel proud of you. This is a huge move based on your heart and principles, but I think it also makes sense from a practical point of view--there will be so many people interested in Ukrainian culture/language now, instead of Russian. I've also found myself not wanting to learn/speak Russian as much since the war. My wife is originally from Kyiv. She didn't at all discourage me from continuing with Russian, but this is just how i felt. Through the years I always felt torn between learning Ukrainian and Russian, but just chose Russian as it seemed more 'practical' with more speakers in different countries. Just yesterday, I finally decided to just start learning Ukrainian, and bought a few UA language books...and today, I saw this from you. Perfect timing! In light of recent events, I want my young daughter to learn to speak мова героїв, language of heroes. I want her to be (and i also want to be) part of preserving the beautiful spirit of the Ukranian language and culture. I will likely continue with Russian as well (although with more focus on Ukrainian). I'm pretty good at learning languages, so hopefully it won't be too bad to do both🤷♂, especially with a native Ukranian/Russian speaker at home with me. Do you have any thoughts on learning both simultaneously? I mean, I'm guessing alot of Ukranian children grow up learning both at the same time right? слава україні!! Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! I know you will be successful in your new direction! And I'm here for it! 🇺🇦💙💛💙🇺🇦

Hey! Oh wow! So good to read such a comment! 🔥 Perfect timing indeed 🤗 I will be glad to be helpful 🙏 Yes, we were growing up using both languages, and it was not a problem for us. I believe it is possible to learn boththese languages at once, but it is better when you have different levels, f. e. to start Ukrainian when you have a certain level of Russian or on contrary. Then you will confuse them less and even use your existing knowledge as advantage by comparing the languages 🤗

@@VERBA_SCHOOL Thanks for the reply! About having a certain level in one language to use as a scaffolding for the other; it makes perfect sense. я говорю по-английски, по-японски, (оба свободно) ,по-испански и немного по-китайски, и я думаю, что это правда. My level in Russian is maybe beginner-intermediate (don't know the A/B difficulty designations)--lots of holes and mistakes with cases, but enough to be able have pretty simple daily conversations around the house. I think I'll be alright, but we'll see lol. Again, I'm totally psyched for you Nika, I think you're doing the right thing. I understand your decision, but as a someone who is learning Russian, who loves both Russia and Ukraine, who loves to travel to Ukraine, i do not think it is great idea. When someone is learning 2 languages that are similar, there is big probability that they will eventually mix them. And in this case, they will speak супжик. All my ukraine friends told me that its bad idea, and i will stay with Russian. I am from country, which is in similar position with in terms of language similarity and mixing those languages. Personaly, i will start learning ukrainian after reaching C1 russian.

It is your right to choose. Sometimes it may be confusing but if you have a good learning plan you won't mix the languages, and you definetely won't speak surzhik, because to speak it you need to live among the people who speak it. If you just sometimes confuse a few words, it is not surzhik :)
@metiupapluch

@@VERBA_SCHOOL Yes i know, суржик was just best example that comes to my mind when speaking about mixing languages. Still, mixing is possible, and even more with similar languages - it also applies to SK/CZ/PL or German / Netherlands or Spanish / Catalan, not only RU / UA. And it happend to me already. In my opinion and experience, the more advanced you are in language, the less mixing happen. So that is why i will start with Ukrainian after C1 Russian. And I also recomend that for everybody. Because being A1/A2 in russian and starting with ukrainian, i would definitely mixed it, and not only me (now i am B1 probably). Still thank you for bringing so much into russian learners comunity. And i am looking forward for everything you bring into ukrainian learners comunity.

@metiupapaluch I agree that it can be confusing.. For example.. I know Spanish and Portuguese are not similar to Russian.. But.. They're similar to each other.. Like.. Spanish for "bed" is "cama".. Which is also the Portuguese word for bed... Spanish for "laundry" is "lavanderia"... In Portuguese the word is similar to the Spanish one... However there R many words in both Spanish and Portuguese and that R different.. Window... "Ventana"... //// "Janela"... //// Or... ,,, Chairs.... "Sillas".... /// "Cadeiras"...
