You the best buddy, I appreciate your videos. I am not an IT person but I always learn something new from your videos even if they don't talk about my area of expertise. Keep up the good work brother, you are amazing! I like that you have a sense of humor too, it helps us to get entertained too (expert in wasting time). 😂😃

Insightful vid , I definitely appreciate the insight and honesty when it comes to certs. I’m currently considering switching over to a different field of work but it’s hard to find opinions on certs that are not biased. Great info

I respectfully disagree, I think IT certs are well worth it. It makes sure you have got the theoretical knowledge of a subject. Of course nothing beats experience but if you don't have the experience, it's a good way to start and then apply it in labs or the real world if you can. It definitely gives your CV an edge, especially if you're starting out in IT.

Hey Jacques. I agree with the points you have raised there and I talk about these in the video I posted two weeks ago. IT Certs are worth it and there is no downside as long as you have the right expectations and you understand what it takes to actually make it into a good role in IT. The goal of this video is to make people realize that doing certifications isn’t where it ends but they also need to put in that same energy towards practicing and applying the skills. FRom my experience, people will always value experience over qualifications and certifications (at least in I.T)…

No double down!! Ofc people are going to say certifications are worth it when they spent 300 buck or more to take a multiple choice exam! The best way is getting practical experience... Guess what, employers are going to expect that anyway. Also, if you like IT you're already learning and studying this in your own.

These days comptia certs are a dime a dozen... You're better off setting up a lab environment versus paying for a three hundred dollar multiple choice exam... If your company pays for it or you get a free voucher .. sure study and take it

Cybersecurity professional entering the chat. For cybersec it is needed. For most. It depends on the cert. CISSP, Sec+, CISM are well known and can open doors for you. Networking is important as well

I personally feel experience tops any certification in I.T , looking at web development frameworks for example ....they are changing like fuel prices and to keep up with that can be really hard lol.. even if you know how to write a (function, foor loop , class ) whatever it may be :)...Experience allows you to grasp new frameworks really fast

Insightful video! Now that it has been established that experience will be the greatest asset, besides working for peanuts, and doing internships etc, what can uni students do to get an upper hand?

As someone who just retired from the Semiconductor industry I can tell you certifications matter at big companies. Relevant experience is an opinion and a certificate is a fact. HR wants facts to protect the company in court. Your advice is terrible and has nothin to do with the way corporation work.

That’s fascinating and thanks for sharing. Can you give examples of these certifications that you are referring to? I would love to read up more on these certifications given how important they seem to be and do you also mind sharing examples of such companies that require their employees to have certifications? Most companies I have worked, including my current employer, don’t put any emphasis on certifications as a requirement to get hired. They are certainly encouraged as a way to progress and improve your skills though.

@@trying2adult When I worked at Motorola we had two operators who wanted to move into maintenance. One was ex Navy with a technical rating the other was completely green with and AS degree. HR said the guy with the degree had to be chosen since time in the Navy is only "Experience". Affirmative action had a lot to do with it. It was an excuse not a reason. My last job I worked on about a dozen different types of equipment and factory training on the equipment was a big deal. Only a few people went to the classes and they were expensive for the company. The classes were only one to two weeks long and anyone with initiative could quickly catch up but it was the certificate that mattered. Layoffs are a fact of life in the industry in the little piece of paper makes you better than someone who doesn't have it. Not quite on topic but there was a time when we were upgrading a sub-assembly to a major piece of equipment. Now fifteen minutes with the manual would have told me all I needed to know but I had to come in on my day off to do a "factory" training class so my boss could say everyone was "factory trained".
