I would have thought to use the dowels to put it together but not just to repair the stripped out holes and keep the ability to take it apart, this is a great trick.

I think that this is not solid wood but pressed wood. Longer screws would grind that to pulp just like the original screws did. Dowels glued into the pressed wood are therefore the better solution as they provide much stronger hold to the screw while fully attached to the pressed wood, eliminating its weakest point.

If you don't have dowels, use golf tees or toothpicks. Glue obviously can't hurt, but it still works without it.

Came to say the same thing about toothpicks 😆 Like just stick a few wooden toothpicks no glue needed and you can have a strong bound again.

At that point dude just use the dowels and the glue to hold it together. That’s the top of your bookshelf and will not need to resist much sideways force, nor upwards force (except for maybe moving it around but just ask whoever is moving it to grab the side)

The little bits of wood acts as a wedge so it gives it a better bite for the screws and makes it more secure.

@Kevin S I have been attempting to design a reptile enclosure that I could assemble in my apartment, dissassemble, and then put back together in a different apartment, without having to drill new holes under budget.. I now know how I am going to do it well under budget. Insurmountable was accurate for my situation.

An easier and probably more effective way is to put a chopstick in the hole then snap it off at the top. It works great

Since most people don't have those tools. ... here's a faster solution. 1)Remove the screws 2)Get a toothpick 3)Dip toothpick in any kind of glue 4)Place toothpick in hole 5)Break off excess toothpick 6)Put screw back in hole 7) 😃

You generally do not connect two pieces of wood with screws that are fully threaded. Those are for drywall. You want to use a screw that is unthreaded enough to pass through the first piece of wood and only want threads engaging in the second. This way there is a clamping force.

Threaded screws are my least favorite. These pull the top board down, while fullthread screws will usually leave a bit of space between the 2 boards

@Johnny Chimpo The example was a loose surface board. For example, on a desk. Those things jump up and become looser every time you hit it from below with your knees. So he took the screws out from the holes which had become too big, plugged it with dowels in which he drilled new holes, and screwed the screws back in. The result is a tight join and a stable desktop. I'm a girl

I gave built alot of furniture and maybe it's just because of where I'm from I never have an issue with the structural integrity of it. Also there is a reason for small pieces of furniture it literally says to not use a drill in the instructions. Again might just be where I live but you shouldn't need to reinforce your "build it yourself" furniture as intensly as they just showed.

Take a razor knife and a hammer. Use the knife to cut a sliver of wood from a old piece of scrap (pine works really good). Stuff the wood in the holes and use the hammer to drive them in. Don’t worry it doesn’t have to looks clean and nice. Put the piece you’re screwing back in place. It’s the same and a lot faster. Considering this is some junk press wood and I’m sure there not really any weight this is considered over kill.

It's easier to snap off a length of bamboo kebab skewer add a little glue and replace screws. As a cabinmaker l have them in my toolbox, always .

If you slice into the pins on the side that is going into the wood to make it barbed you will get better adhesion from the glue

Another way you can do this is just by filling the hole with toothpicks and breaking them off in the old screwhole. This gives something the screq can bite onto and not strip out. Its pretty strong as well.

Probably not to best in this situation because there is precut holes on the top piece of wood but if you angle the two end screws towards the middle then the wood less likely to come loose
