I realize that your garden is too big to use this but have you ever tried Red geraniums? Beetles fly to the flowers, eat, then become paralized by the geranium oils for about 12 hours dropping all over as if dead. I tip the plant pots of paralized beetles out into soapy water daily. Obviously this method is better for smaller less extensive gardens . But thought you might be interested in knowing about this option.🥰🇨🇦

I wonder if spraying geranium essential oil on the plants would work. Kind of like some organic gardeners use dilutes neem oil for certain applications.

Traps do work as long as you keep them at the a long distance from effected plants....downside is it attracts beetles from other yards. Best way is to get a company in to treat the ground and stop them before they develop

As it says, place the bags a good distance (the farther the bettler) from the plants in your garden that you want to protect. Yes, they trap japanese beetles, a lot of them. But there are two problems. First, they attract beetles from a considerable distance, lots of them. Second, not all the beetles end up in the trap. So, it is quite possible to end up with more beetles in your garden than you would normally have. Don't use them in a small garden. I work in a nursery, and I have never seen so many beetles with three traps nearby. I have now moved the traps to the far reaches of the parking lot to attract the beetles away from our stock. The swarms now seem to be subsiding. Good Luck but these traps may not be the answer to the beetle problem.

I made the mistake of ordering the bags through amazon. Now I’ve got 6. Then I ordered the trap and the round bait thing came. So either items came with the yellow plastic boards. Can I fashion something to work? Or just go get the beginning trap pack? Problem is I guess everyone is having this issue so it was sold out

I had Lady Thumb (Persicaria maculosa) explode in one of my wild flower bed this summer. The Japanese Beetles decided it was the food of choice in the garden and stayed away from everything else.

You have more beetles then ever being drawn to your yard by the traps. People I know who used the traps had more beetles when using the trays and less when they got rid of the traps.

Thanks. I think you are right about that. I added a disclaimer to keep the traps away from the garden. In my case, the beetles were already there so I drew them away. It helped a lot but I probably attracted more than ever. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Our landscaper treats our yard for grubs every year. We STILL have beetles though, because our neighbors don't treat their yard. I had to put up the bug bags this year because our roses and hardy northern hibiscus were being destroyed by Japanese Beetles. They seem to be working despite the intel that says they don't work. I don't want to use Seven because I don't want to hurt the bees. Hopefully I'll be successful in at least reducing the number of Japanese beetles visiting my gardens. Full disclosure: the traps need to be at least 30 feet away and downwind from the garden.

You'll never convince me that I'm better off without the traps. If a garden is inundated with beetles, and I'm catching them by the bagful, that's several thousand that aren't eating my plants. Does the trap catch them all? No. What ot does do is reduce the numbers to something more managable. Do you stull have to hand-pick them and drop them in a jar? Yes. But you're picking in the 10s instead of the thousands. I put my traps up wind of my plants. That way, even the slightest breeze draws the beetles to the trap and away from my plants.

Japanese beetles (JB) are not native to North America. They raise havoc where they become established (currently from around the Mississippi River eastward). The beetle adults eat over 250 different types of flowers and leaves, while the grubs feed from, and on roots. It takes one year for this beetle to go from egg to egg here, but the further north you go, it takes 2 years to complete a life cycle. The bait used is a combination of food (rose scent) and sex lures to attract females and males. Do not touch the bait with your bare hands, as you can absorb the lure into your fat cells, making you a walking JB attractant. If your area does not have JB present and this pest is found, cooperate with the authorities in their eradication program: you really do not want this pest present in your ecosystem. If you don't think this is a problem, rewatch this post!
