I have a 35+ foot tall Japanese maple 11 feet from the sidewalk. There used to be trees and shrubs planted along the sidewalk underneath the Japanese maple. Some of those were doing well, others not. I took them all down, added 6 or 8 inches of soil, and will plant cherry laurels along that sidewalk in October of this year. They'll be 5 feet from the Japanese maple. Is this a bad idea? The added soil's pH is 6.5, which is too high for rhododendrons, which everyone says is the best to plant in this situation. Does anyone here have an opinion?

Imo that should work fine in the short term. Maybe a 20 year plus issue

Hi! Just subscribed to your channel. Very helpful info. I’m planning on planting one near the side of my house which has some shades but gets sun at least 8 hrs a day. I have a small area (4ft x 6ft). Which Japanese maple can remain dwarf sized (the ones I can get my hands on are - Crimson Queen, BloodGood.. I like the leaf shape of Red Dragon) or how do I make sure it doesn’t grow too big/tall? I’m in SoCal. Thank you!

Love your video gentlemen. Just a note though, goldfish do not grow to the size of their bowl, they grow to the maximum size their water quality will allow, then they die prematurely. The lifespan of goldfish is much longer than people know, as some species can live to 60+ years. Goldfish like you win at a fair can get over 12” long and obviously do not grow that big in a bowl, as they will poison themselves long before they could get that big. Aside from that one comment though, y’all’s video is accurate and informative! Keep up the good work.

Depends greatly on how close. It wouldn’t want those touching the rootball. English Ivy could be an issue covering foliage also

I assume every variety of Japanese maples have non-invasive roots? I have a few Bloodgood Japanese maples. They are planted a good 25 feet or more from my septic tank & drain field. Is that distance good? How far do the roots spread outward from a bloodgood? They get 15 to 20 feet high at maturity supposedly.

Great, thanks. I thought they were non-invasive and septic friendly. Most everyone says that. I came across one site that said bloodgood JM are known for their septic line clogging capabilities. Saying they are the worst offenders. Contrary to everyone else. Thanks for the clarification.

Do you guys have a treatment for Verticillium wilt? Years ago I had a large Palmatum Bloodgood die, (pretty sure Vert. killed it). It seems that my gardening has reactivated the wilt and it has killed half of my bonsai collection. Also, do you know of Acer palm/shiruswanum varieties which are resistent?
@MrMapleShow
2 жыл бұрын
Verticillium wilt has a few forms. What many nurserymen call “Quick die” and a slower form. They are not as common as many make them out to be. Anytime someone sees an issue, they call it verticillium or pseudomonas without testing. Take it you your local horticultural extension agent and get it tested. It may not be a disease, but something new you are doing or an environmental condition. They can be diagnosed correctly through testing. Once it has been tested, you will have a clearer picture on what to do

My Japanese maple was crowded by the fig tree, after years of being side by side. The maple was getting very little light and right where it sat the fig began to turn yellow and die back. We moved the maple to stop this process.

MrMaple-SO glad I watched this. I have a really big japanese maple next to our house we just bought and was thinking I needed to take out. My problem is I have a gutter downspout I need to bury and guide away from my house. It is really proximal to the japanese maple. My question is can I dig down around 4 feet away from the maple and guide the water run off away from the house out into the yard without harming the maple? Anyone's comments will be welcome.
