Well... I am 115 kg and ride a custom made full carbon board with 5cm fins... The original fins had 4 cm and it made a huuuge difference to me, switching the fins! With the bigger fins I am able to hold the edge and going upwind from 13 to 30 knots. Turning the board to toeside is just a little push, when you release your weight a little... I am happy with the 5 cm fins, no more changes required.

I have 4cm and 3cm, on perfect flat in Greece the 3cm were great and 4cm were good. Back in Israel with choppy conditions the 3cm were terrible and swapping back to 4cm was a very noticeable improvement. Haven't tried 5cm except for some borrowed boards I haven't ridden enough to judge nor did I ride them with any other fin sizes to compare. Many boards with 5cm fins had less grip than my board with 4cm fins, so the shape of the board is also very important. I think the channels on boards like the radnium and kevpro really make a difference, these boards have significantly better grip than many other boards I've tried. I suppose if you do freestyle you want the smallest that works for the conditions you're in (2-3cm for flat, 4cm otherwise). If you aren't doing freestyle then 4-5cm is probably best as the smaller fins provide no real benefit. It's no wonder freestyle boards usually come with 2.5-4cm while the rest come with 4-5cm. What's most important for fin style choice is first the conditions in which you're riding (flat or chop/waves) and then your riding style (freestyle or not).

How’s the wind in Greece? Worth a visit for freestyle? - Rygo

@@MACkiteboarding During the season mainland Greece has amazing freestyle conditions. Wind usually 15-20 knots in Raches and a bit stronger in Drepano. And there's also Dioni for freestyle but we were unlucky with only 13 knots there. Dioni is 1 hour drive from Drepano and Raches is 3 hours from Drepano, and both Raches and Drepano are 2-2.5 hours from Athens, so you can chance spots based on forecast. I haven't been to Lefkada but it's also supposed to have great freestyle spots on season. I suggest to only book the car in advance, so you can be flexible with changing spots, although we did get a nice discount renting an apartment in Psathopyrgos (10 minutes from Dreapno pot) for 10 days straight. Drepano Raches and Dioni provide conditions that can compete with Brazil lagoons in terms of perfect flat water and steady winds, with Brazil's advantage being that the wind starts very early and is almost guaranteed every day, while in Greece the starting hour varies and even on season wind isn't as guaranteed as Brazil. Also, I really liked the atmosphere in mainland Greece - Those places are not very touristic, (most kiters are locals), but they still provide everything you need in terms of cheap places to stay and great places to eat. The islands in Greece provide stronger winds and less perfect for freestyle, although early season Rhodes (Prasonisi) is supposed to also provide perfect flat conditions without the very strong winds of the high season.

watching this video I came up with an idea - has anyone tried putting big fins on heelside and smaller fins on toeside?

Hi, and about riding finless, is it something that I have to do if I want to progress??

Really depends on your board -most kite boards does not have deep channels especially the freeride oriented ones. Then you properly be better of just putting smaller fins on, because your board will be skitting a lot. If u got some proper wakestyle channels it will be awesome finless especially with boots. Landing blind is so much more forgiving with small fins or finless.

Yes finless works, on obstacles or shallow water spots. To go upwind use the edge much harder. When jumping, the landing must go downwind. Give it a try and learn.

If vou ride freestyle / wakestyle it's going to be harder to edge and pop at first, but afterwards if you put the fins back on you're gonna have a lot more skills and control of the board, could be a great exercise. took off the fins on my asylum it's sooo much better a little bit more technical but way more fun for sure
