Since this video is about the question "Do Koreans Smell Garlic?" I will answer you now.
The answer is ... I don't know. And yes and no. Let me explain why.
First, I don't know.
Everything has its own smell. The cucumber has its own smell, the carrot has its own smell. So, the garlic? Of course, it has a smell. But in Korea, we never talk about the smell of garlic. Koreans don't care about the smell of garlic. So if you ask me if Korean smells like garlic, I've never smelled it, so I don't know.
But the other answer is yes. You can smell the garlic. This is because we have a lot of dishes, including garlic, in Korea. So when we eat garlic, we smell like garlic. It's natural.
It also means no. We don't smell garlic if we don't eat a lot of it.
So, do Koreans eat a lot of garlic? Yes! Compared to other countries, we eat a lot of it.
Ok, so why do Koreans eat so much garlic? There are three things you should know.
1. Korean history began with garlic.
Let me tell you about the legend of Korea and how it started thousands of years ago. It is the first country founded on the Korean peninsula.
Long ago, there was a god, and the son of the god Hwanwung always admired the human world. And finally, he came to the human world. There were a tiger and a bear. They visited Hwanwung. The tiger said, "I want to be a human." The bear said the same thing. "I want to be a human." Hwanwung said, "Ok, I know how human you can be. Stay in a dark space for 100 days eating only garlic and mugwort." They said, "Okay." So they went to the cave. A few days later, the tiger said, "This is crazy. I can't stand anymore." The tiger ran away. The bear stayed there and ate only garlic and the coat of arms for 100 days. After that, what happened? The bear has become a woman. This bear married Hwanwung, and they had a son. His name is Dangunwanggeom, and he is the one who founded the country of Korea. If our ancestors didn't eat garlic and mugwort, there wouldn't be Korea, right? Garlic is very important in Korea, and we need garlic.
2. Many Korean dishes are based on garlic.
Koreans eat the most garlic in the world. A person eats 6.35 kg per year on average. Many Korean dishes have garlic as a base.
3. Koreans also eat garlic as a vegetable.
In Korea, it is considered a vegetable. Koreans don't think it's a spice.
Since it's a vegetable, not a spice, we buy a lot of it. We need a huge bag of garlic so that we can have one or two at each meal.
Something else! We eat raw garlic.
Conclusion! I asked some foreign friends who went to Korea, and they said Koreans don't smell like garlic. When we eat a lot of raw garlic, yes, we do. But Koreans don't care. We are too used to this smell.
