I've always thought this to be true, my first guitar was a 2005 lp studio that weights 10.5 lbs, after that i bought another gibson with the same pickups but this new one had weight relief and it sounded way better to my ears. After many years I have bought many guitars most of them on the lighter side and I found they tend to resonate more and even have more sustain. Perhaps people have had it all wrong and it's the lighter ones that sound better. And they are more confortable to play too.

I love light guitars because I stand up and play a lot. IMO many guitars could have a thinner body. I experimented with a Harley Benton by taking of 10 mm on the back and drilled about 100 10-15 mm holes and it became around 1 kg lighter, from 4kg to 3 kg. It’s very nice to play now.

Running the video's audio into fabfilter pro-Q3 shows #3 has the most balanced and full spectrum (more mids/way more open top end compared to the other guitars)... anyway, Derek Trucks' a legend!

The sound radiation energy from a plate (like the guitar top or body) is R = sqrt(E/ρ^3), where E is Young’s Modulus of flexure (i.e. stiffness), and ρ is the density. In other words, the lower the density of the wood (i.e. the lighter it is), the louder it is, and the more it "rings". So given two pieces of Mahogany with approximately the same stiffness, the lighter one will ring louder. The woods with the highest sound radiation energy, in order of increasing energy, are: Spruce, Redwood, Basswood, Red Cedar, Paulownia, Balsa. However, these are also decreasing in strength, so you have to balance the two qualities, and possibly reinforce them with braces in an hollow body acoustic top. Usually these are not strong enough for a neck, but some classical acoustic guitars have Cedar necks. So contrary to popular belief, dense woods like Maple, Ebony, Rosewood, and so on, often used for necks, do not ring well (approximately half the sound energy of Spruce), since they're so dense/heavy. But they are strong. Everything's a trade-off.

The formula R = sqrt(E/ρ^3) is partially correct regarding the relationship between density, stiffness, and sound propagation, but the approach is simplified. In reality, sound radiation is influenced by many factors, including the shape of the plate, its dimensions, and vibration modes. The statement that lighter wood resonates more has some basis, but it’s an oversimplification: sound quality does not depend solely on density but on the combination of density and stiffness, along with other factors like damping and resonance frequency. The list of woods with high sound radiation energy generally makes sense. For example, spruce is known to be a good wood for acoustic guitar tops due to its high stiffness-to-weight ratio. However, the way the relationship between density and "playability" or "resonance" is presented can be misleading without considering the full context. Density is not the only determining factor in sound quality. The observation that dense woods like maple, ebony, and rosewood do not resonate well is partially correct, but other properties, such as the ability to transmit vibrations evenly, durability, and the specific tone desired, must be considered. Stiffness is crucial for guitar necks, and denser woods are preferred precisely for their ability to withstand the tension of the strings without warping. In Conclusion he wrote some truths but oversimplifies complex concepts. It is important to consider that a guitar’s sound results from a balance of several factors, not just density and stiffness, but also shape, construction, and specific material use.

It seems like the wood in lighter ones are more porous (more like hollow/acoustic guitars), and the wood in older guitars of any weight are dryer in general (which happens over time) and were also older to begin with (before rapid deforestation), so they also resonate better. The next factor is how the body and neck resonate with one another (are they the same or a complementary frequency)...

It would have been interesting to have put them in the order you preferred the sounds from best to worse and then weigh them and see if the order you placed them in from best to worse also went from lightest to heaviest. It may just be coincidence and the next heaviest could have been 2nd lightest. If weight really does have a 'big' impact, then why was there such an uproar with Gibson making weight relieved Les Paul standards? Personally, I think weight matters most when you are stood playing a guitar for a long show - more so than any tonal benefits. I think my heaviest is ~9lbs but I can't say its 'better/worse' than my lightest ~5.5lbs (hollowbody) because they are different instruments and not meant to sound 'the same'
@Rose.Of.Hizaki
5 жыл бұрын
Maybe im talking bullshit but maybe the lighter wood is more porous so the sound resonates a lot more with the body to offer better/warmer tones while heavy guitars can sound 'darker' ??? I say this but older Gibson guitars were quite heavy back in the day and still sounded pretty good. I havent played a more modern one so cant really comment if theres been any serious changes over the years but then again. the woods used back in the 70s and 80s were more than likely a lot more higher quality than they are today as manufacturers have had to find different trees to save deforesting the place where they got all their wood back in the 70s. This is just speculation of course.

Cool comparison! Thanks for the video! :) My order (starting with the one that sounds best to my ears) is: 1 - 5 - 3 - 4 - 2. So i like the heavier ones more, but dont like the heaviest one at all. If you listen closely to 1 and 2: They sound completely different although they are the 2 heaviest ones. 2 and 3 have a more similar sound than 1 and 2 actually. Which proves, that this proves nothing (AT LEAST TO MY EARS) xD So thats all very subjective of course!!! But thats just what i heared from your recordings. May be completely different hearing and feeling it while playing. I have a LP Standard 50s (2021) which weighs 4,6kg (10,14 pounds) and it sounds not dull or dark at all. It actually sounds way more open and has way more clarity than my weight reliefed 3,6kg LP Studio (2019), unplugged as well as amplified. Comparing lightest to heaviest: Lightest has extended top end but also sounds a bit thinner. Clean tones are very pretty and chimy but the gainy palm mutes sound a bit wimpy and screechy. Heaviest guitar has more low mid push and tamed top end. Cleans don't sound as nice but the gainy palm mutes have more authority and balls. More reminiscent of a Les Paul.

Well... better? That's a matter of opinion, does it matter to the sound? Well obviously. I mean the whole system, including the strings and the body and all is a big and massive resonant system... basically a spring. When you pluck the string, it vibrates, that vibration will transfer to the whole body and neck and the properties of that whole system will determine the resonant properties and damping of the system -> sound. Because all those vibrations will affect how the string will vibrate after it's been plucked since it's attached and thus part of the system. so it doesn't matter if you have acoustic guitar or a pickup, you'll be hearing the sound of the whole system regardless. The mass of the body might be huge compared to string, but it's not huge enough that it doesn't matter. If you make it lighter, you increase the resonant frequency and stiffer body will decrease the damping factor. how much and on what frequencies? Well that depends on the exact material, mass and size of the body and neck and everything so... is it something you'll be able to hear? It surely can be... But not necessarily.

So from now on Thomann will be grading all their solid electric guitars by weight and will only sell those that fall below a certain wieght? Or will publish the weight on the web site and charge a premium for the lighter guitars? Also some of the weight is water and some of that will be lost as the guitar gets older. And does this mean that an ultra modern weight relieved Gibson Les Paul actually sounds better than a vintage re-issue Les Paul with no weight relief?
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses
5 жыл бұрын
Terry Relph-Knight Short answers? No, no and no. :) No way a store can select guitars by weight. Guitars go out way too fast and it’s way too expensive to do such thing. A denser wood with weight relief resonates differently than a solid but less dense wood. Which you like more is up to you. Also we didn’t say lighter guitars are BETTER, we just liked them more. I like heavier guitars for high gain sounds. They tend to be tighter. //cheers, Kris

@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses :-) I wasn't being entirely serious, but I thought my suggestions might generate mild panic. As to 'A denser wood with weight relief resonates differently than a solid but less dense wood' I think it depends on the type of weight relief, 9 hole, fully chambered, modern or ultra-modern. In any case I was talking about Gibson Les Paul's and assuming that the density of the mahogany remained about the same. I do know I prefer lighter guitars, would avoid 12lb bodies and find it hard to believe that anyone really wants to play a heavy gutiar. I recently repaired a Gibson Les Paul Barely Finished Guitar which had a fully chambered body (almost completely hollow). It weighed only 7.5lbs and sounded great but very obviously did not resonate like an LP with no relief. Played acoustically you could hear a lot of sound from the lower bout where the chambering is at its largest. I don't think the 9 holes sound any different than a guitar with no relief, but then they aren't much lighter. The Harley Benton CST-24's are phenomenal in my opinion and I think part of that is the thin mahogany body (well thinner than a Gibson Les Paul) with no heavy maple cap.
@scorch72

too many variables to really decide, do the guitars all have the same brand of strings, pickups, nut material, exact amount of thickness in their clearcoats, are they both at the same humidity level internally during your tests, the quality of my shitty ipad speaker, was the guitar built on a friday afternoon or a monday morning, etc etc. Long story short, a guitar's sound, no matter what the weight, is hugely dependent on the sum of its parts and construction.

Impetuous, insubordinate, righteously indignant guitar shop wannabes proven wrong by a professional guitarist… get on you knees boys… apologize forthwith.

What a waste of time if you bought one of these horrible guitars you dropped 50% of you cash that day once you got it home who cares what the others sound like !!!!!!!

Holly Bo to be fair, all five of these were far from being horrible. Also, you lose money on all purchased guitars, unless it’s a Gibson custom shop or a limited guitar that becomes collectible. //cheers, Kris

Well coming from a retailer that comment is the worst PR reply ever! My point is what ever the other 4 guitars sounded like its irrelevant to the buyer once they have made there choice ...
