The manufacturer can refuse to honor the warranty if your mods may have caused the failure. For example, if you put a tune on the car and the engine fails due to a bearing failure they can refuse to fix it. However, in this case I doubt the tune would have caused that. The Magnuson-Moss warranty act prevents manufacturers from refusing warranty service unless they can prove the modification caused the failure. The catch is, to get them to fix it you would have to take them to court and prove your modification didn't cause the failure. Do you see how difficult this would be?

I had a Chrysler car once under warranty, had a problem, car was in dealership 4 times, they couldn't fix it, they replaced computer, all upper end engine gaskets and a few other things, I knew what the problem was, they wouldn't listen. After a month of back and forth, I found email to VP of chysler, wrote a letter describing everything and all that was done and I told them I was a 3rd generation Chrysler owner. Got a phone call from dealership with in an hour of sending it, they beg me to bring it in so they could take care of it and finally got it fixed and it was exactly as I told them. So squeaky wheel does get to job done, lol.

About time some one tried to get rid of some of the confusion about this. I knew in "most cases" the mod has to cause the damage in order to deny the claim. When I took my SS in because it was going into limp mode they asked about the mods. I was like uh oh. Here we go. But nope. They took their time and looked the car over (three days worth) , provided me with a loaner and found the problem in the wiring in the throttle body . Which had not been modded or changed. Ever. But then you get something like the cracked dash thing and oh no. Not touching that one no matter how many BBB complaints we get. So it is kinda hit and miss depending on which dealer you go to. Thanks for the video and research

I worked at a Cadillac/Hummer dealer. Customer purchased a brand new H2 from us. A few months later, his H2 came in on the hook because he had no drive. Tech opens the hood and sees a shiny BLOWER on the engine. Tech determined the added power of the supercharger ruined the transmission. Service writer looks in the records to see when/where it was installed. NOTHING. S/A calls the customer to ask where the supercharger was installed. It was done by a nationally known 4x4 company. That company wasn't a GM authorized shop. Because the supercharger was installed by a non-certified shop and not at the dealer, the warranty was voided and the owner would have to pay to have the transmission replaced. We (the dealership) sold and installed superchargers on H2s and would not void the warranty. CUSTOMER WAS NOT HAPPY because he didn't know the addition of the supercharger by a non-authorized shop voids the warranty.

Hold on Mike. I’m at the point where you’re talking about doing a header back exhaust. That WILL NOT void the power train warranty, but it will void the emissions warranty, if GM has one, and will also make the car not street legal. You can’t touch the cats, for I believe 10 years, unless they’re damaged. That’s an no-no, and SEMA will not back you up if you mess with emissions equipment. Now, I’m not saying not to do it. I ran my 335GT catless for 2 years, and if I could get a downpipe, I’d do the same with my X3. Just know what you’re getting into.

Adding to what TehZured said, when i want to start a warranty claim on a engine at the dealer i work for, the first thing we are required to do is send in ECM calibrations to ensure the vehicle is stock now and has been stock since initial purchase. You can't fake that and we've declined customers in the past for any type of ECM tune.

I could see back when they were throwing pot metal junk like the 4L60E in cars being worried about Active Torque Management mods being a warranty concern, but with the 8L90E? The reason you'd turn ATM off is for a shift kit back in the day because the PCM would pull timing figuring something was broken. If that changed something in the 8 speed w/o other mods? They were asking for it to be done but you didn't use "approved" software where it would be invisible in every block of the actual computer map. Certain builders claim to have the abilities to not void the warranty after multiple mods, so that is my consensus. Anybody else ever tune a Buick Grand National with a Scanmaster to get the Block Learning and Integrator to show 128? You kids and your new fangled toys. If GM is really watching your page, let me just say that we want an AWD car that has a manual transmission and some balls. Plus, you shouldn't have axed Pontiac.

CANBUS - look it up there are algorithms that know that code has changed and leave tell tales just like that. All the systems from the gage's to the tire pressure sensors all see the same code that runs the engine. And yes I was born in the 50's but know way too much about cars.
@stevenp3176

As noted the software will be different as well as the PCM has a counter of how many times it was flashed. With today’s engine management systems at best you may make a small amount of additional power until the system compensates. Once the system is has reached a set percentage of power the system will stop trying to make additional power. It will also back off if the threshold is exceeded. You will need a tune to make power with parts. If you look up how torque based power management works you will see all of this.

Very good topic. Here is the deal, in the operational manual global warranty management aftermarket parts will indefinitely void your warranty. The covered powertrain warranty covers alot of parts that if they want they can block the warranty claim.Under no circumstances cpo used cars are in fact non elegible to be certified by manufacturers .If the vehicle in question deosnt have a ac delco oil filter but a fram instead the car cannot be certified even pinstripes can make it non certified. This video is very helpful and educational but the fact remains you alter or do any modifications will void your warranty per se via global operational warranty manual.

Hey, I own a 2019 Elantra GT N - Line with the turbo 4cyl 1.6l... I installed an aftermarket CAI, did the factory BPV to BOV swap, changed the turbocharger hot pipe & added a cat-back exhaust. I'm planning to do a catless downpipe & tune the summer. (I'm getting a spare ECU to tune, so I don't flash over the factory tune.) Would any of this affect my warranty if my car went in for service only? I don't do service myself, and I always use synthetic oil and change it rather early, every 3,000kms....mainly because of my driving habits... :D and I just so happen to know everyone in the service department at my dealership, I did my apprenticeship there a year ago. Eventually, I'm planning to run around ~300 to 320whp and anything more than that I'd start reaching limitations on the clutch and axles, the factory engine can handle a little over 400whp before it needs bottom-end upgrades and an upgraded turbo. But that won't come until I pass the 100k powertrain warranty.

Dam good advice👍 It is even somewhat relevant to people like myself that are outside the USA, OUR regulatory body's are the Australian consumer commission, Dept of fair trade and the motor traders association.. but our basic motor vehicle warranty is quite similar in that modifying is allowed so long as the modification is legal, road worthy and did not cause the issue. We also have some additional statutory rights under Australian consumer law. Great information, we could use some passionate sales folk, who are not interisted only in the sale in front of them, but are willing to go the extra mile to create a longstanding, trusting relationship with their customers though, (at least in my hometown) 👍👍👍🇦🇺

One thing I would add to this is if you're in the market to buy Camaro or Corvette instead of bothering with mods just get the ZL1 Camaro or the ZR1 Corvette you don't have to bother with any mods. These cars are already incredibly fast enough and are already modded the way you would without the go-fast goodies packages. Yes they're more money but you're still going to pay the same amount of money buy modding the cars Plus you risk voiding the warranty. Plus resale value. Just intelligence Guided by experience.

Concerning the lemon law and used cars - that's not true (15:27). My wife bought a 2012 Kia Soul in May of 2016. Within 12 months, it was in for service 17 times (for the same problem) for around 47 days total for that year. In December of 2017 we filed a case against Kia and won - settling out of court for $11,500 (the purchase amount). Before the settlement was reached, they finally replaced the motor, but we didn't call off the case. If you buy ANY car with ANY warranty, factory or dealership, you are covered by the lemon law (provided that the warranty covered said issue, the issue wasn't from misuse of the vehicle, etc.). The warranty is a promise from the manufacture/dealership that they will make good on any issues that arise and that are covered by said warranty. New car, used car...doesn't matter. If you take your car in for the same warranty work x-amount of times and the problem still isn't fixed, call an attorney. If you're coming up to the end of your warranty and you take your car in service and get warranty repair (say they had to fix the transmission, for example), but now, six months down the road, the transmission starts acting up again but you're now out of warranty, take it back in. Unfortunately, depending on how nice your dealership is makes or breaks who pays for THAT repair, and you might have to wash, rinse, repeat, but since the FIRST service was done under warranty, you could still have a claim. PS - All consumer law attorneys will take your case for free (if they deem it's a legit case to be able to file). You don't pay them out-of-pocket, but depending on the case and judgment (if it goes to trial), the attorney gets paid from the awarded amount or gets their fees covered separately by the manufacturer. So, if an attorney DOES take your case, they're going to go through hell and high water to make sure they win because that's the only way they're getting paid. Side note - Our attorney even went as far as hunting down the previous (original) owner of the vehicle and getting them to sign on as a witness to the case. This car was in service 22 times with the original owner FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AS WE WERE HAVING (and this wasn't disclosed to us when we purchased the car and was told the car was great and had no issues when we bought it - we tried suing the dealership, but couldn't due to the paperwork we signed upon purchase basically freeing them from liability). As Mike always seems to point out, there's tons of free information out there on the internet, you just need to do your homework ahead of time.

Basics of the Magnuson-Moss Act The Magnuson-Moss Act doesn't require manufacturers or sellers of consumer products to provide written warranties. Instead, the Act requires manufacturers and sellers who do offer written warranties to clearly disclose and describe the terms of those warranties. The Act applies only to products and not to warranties on services. Additionally, the Act covers only warranties on consumer products. In other words, it doesn't apply to warranties on products sold for resale or for commercial purposes. With some exceptions, only warranties on tangible property generally used for personal, family, or household purposes are covered. Requirements of the Magnuson-Moss Act The Magnuson-Moss Act specifies a number of requirements that warrantors must meet. In addition, Congress directed the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to adopt rules to cover other requirements. The Act and the FTC Rules provide three basic requirements that apply to either warrantors or sellers: Warrantors must designate or title a written warranty as either "full" or "limited". Warrantors must state certain information about the coverage of the warranty in a single, clear, and easily readable document. Warrantors or sellers must ensure that warranty is available where the warranted consumer product is sold so consumers can read the warranty before buying.

There were a pair of unusual scratches on the front bumper; he noted them and casually asked the customer if he knew what caused them. "Oh, yeah, that's where my snow plow clamps on." Oops.

It’s a GM product what do you expect. It’s a warning sign letting you know GM is getting ready to close plants, lay off workers, and give bonus checks to the executives

A dealer does not have to prove anything at all. If someone has modded an engine even in a benign manner and there is an engine problem it's a slam dunk. Warranty can and should be denied. Same with any component on the vehicle.

Chrysler is loves to try that. They’ve tried to use that excuse for off-roading because I had road dust on the undercarriage of the vehicle.

EMERSON GRALIA yyyeeeeeaaaahhhhhh... Totally not intended use of the vehicle lol. I bet every ither Jeep commercial out there is featured off road, and then they pull something like that. They were playing with fire when they pulled that. GM has a few more brain cells apparently because if you get a ZL1 1LE, I believe you're covered even under track day use. It is an intended use of the vehicle. I remember the first Nissan GTR. Absolute monster with launch control but if you use it once, warranty voided. WTF? Never sat well with me when they make a car that's great at something but if you try it once they'll basically throw you some birds and tell you to have a nice life or pay up.

I was kind a hoping you were going to tell us what was wrong or what was causing that clicking sound in your stereo system, plus I thought u were going to give a list of mods that would void your warranty. Good video

the torque management actually does damage to the engine because the warranty on that ss has displacement on demand and the dealer took it off them selfs because they have a line of the ss impalas with the ls 5.3 with pistons out the side of the block. so they have been taking that out of them because of it happened to 55-65 year old owners and the dealer said good luck on that part same on the torque management system. because a lot of owners of the z71 Silverado trucks had the same thing happen to there trucks and same thing was taken out of the truck

it all depends on the mod if it is emmisions delete well yes that will void the warranty because the fuel system depends on that loop for the vapor on some ls motors to run smoothly as well as other manufacturer engine. the ss and the lt monte carlo that I have I have reprogramed computers in it to bump hp and torque. after the intake and engine rebuilds. the 3.5 v6 are big sol on those engines. so had to rebuild that engine where I wanted it. because the dealer said I ran it hot when the thermostat stuck shut when I went to the dealer for maintenance. so I yanked the engine and port polished the heads and got the tuned computer for that. the ss have a cold air intake for it and computer tune for it. the dealer said nothing on the tune for both of them

Signal to noise ratios sux, warranties aren't given to you, it is paid for as part of the purchase price.
