Do they have a soul? As much as an inanimate object can I suppose. I think they mostly exemplify something within us, so you could probably argue that it boosts the should. On a similar train of thought; why are they so commonly referred to as "she" (as if to suggest women are also objects) and why in the world would you name one?
@patrickb1143

I think the only thing you guys are disagreeing on is the definition of soul. It's the relationship that the owner has with the bike. It was mentioned how you take care of the bike and the bike takes care of you. It's especially impactful when you're in situations like what Joe mentioned being 100 miles in the desert when you're depending on each other. The stories of the bike and your experiences with it is what imparts your own soul into the bike. The bikes soul isnt created by the bike. Its created by the relationship and stories that imparted the owners soul into the bike. Its sentimental value developed from your experiences with the bike, good times and bad. Even new bikes have soul. There were engineers that dedicated many years of their lives to research and development of that machine. (Including the Honda Rebel lol). Not everyone will see the soul of a particular bike, but those who have built the relationships with the bikes will.

I've got a 1988 Sportster. Shortly after purchasing the bike used, I was hit by a horse trailer that broke away from the truck pulling it. Being the first Harley I ever owned, I didn't want to let it go. I settled with the guy who caused the accident at the accident site for cash to avoid dealing with the insurance company. Me and my best friend rebuilt the bike on a Pauchgo rigid frame with 35° of rake. The bike is now a one off bobber style rigid. The engine is a 1988 883 lower with a 2004 Buell XB9 top end. The bike is currently being gone through and rebuilt. And all of my bikes I've owned, it is by far my favorite, and it definitely has soul. That soul is the love and time I have put into it. To go along with Joe. The bike has so much of my personality into it, that I can't help but love and appreciate it. It has taken on a soul that speaks to me and beckons me. So yes, bikes can absolutely have soul. The best definition was what Spurg and Joe both said about the relationship between man and his machine.

I would describe it as more like a vessel ready to be filled by you, as you ride and look after it, it begins to take shape in character that makes it the way, it is a part of you that connects with you and those who are close to you... On one end- It feels like I'm having a conversation with my brother's bike whenever I'm on or around it, (which is a 200cc, fair power to suit our Indian roads) my other brother who has now inherited the bike finds comfort and closure whenever he rides it, it is like a part of our bro who will continue to remain with us though he left us... There is the memories that the bike will always bring back... On the other end- I am at a point where I am exchanging my good ol' scooter for a bike(humble 110cc, that looks like the 80s-90s, which I like), though excited about the bike, it is heart wrenching to see the old one go, leaving me with the ghost of the memories I've shared with it...😭 So yeah, I believe a bike acquires a soul from its rider/s...

For me, it’s always been a relationship and friendship with my bikes. We’re in this thing together and it becomes an extension of myself. Each one usually ends up with a name. My current bike almost stumped me on the name, wasn’t sure what her name was, but then the license plate arrived in the mail and had the numbers “K8” in it, I instantly went, “Oh, her name is Kate!” It was perfect and just seems right. It’s impossible for me to walk by her in the garage without patting her on the seat and saying, “Hey, Kate!”

Loved this conversation! I’m a retired aerovac technician that trusted his and his crews souls to the soul of C130. When you put your life down and there is, like it or not some trust in the machines performance than I felt safe sharing my soul with that aircraft. My bike also to some extent is the machine that I trust or depend on to be safe with my life. When I’m riding and in the zone I’m sharing my soul with my bike. Sink or swim we’re in it together. I used to carry an ALF stuffed animal in my flight bag. Not for me, but to ward off the gremlins that were known to cause havoc to the 130s soul. So, does my bike have a soul? Mine even has a name. “Om Shanti” it means Peace. It’s all where your passion lies boys.

My current bike is a 1993 Honda CB250 Nightkawk, probably very similar to what Spurgeon rode back in the day. I've only ridden it for one season so far, and does that bike have soul? Maybe, it's definitely quirky. Do I like it? Yes, definitely; and I agree with Lemmy about "first bikes" that they'll always have that "je ne sais quoi" about them probably because of all the trails & tribulations you went through together. When I eventually upgrade to a larger displacement machine, will I miss my Nighthawk? Absolutely, so I guess in that sense, she does have soul.
@dualsportwannabe3708
5 жыл бұрын
If I can make one recommendation to you, keep that Nighthawk. Unless you literally don't have the physical space to store more than one bike. And rather than think of your new bike as an upgrade, just think of it as something different. Everyone always looks at my bike and says, "man you need to "upgrade" to a bigger bike", but they don't understand that connection that I have with that bike. It's a 2005 DR200SE. Objectively, it's nothing remotely special. But I learned to ride on that thing back in 2009. My dad owned it at the time, and when I heard he was going to sell it, well, it went home with me. A few modifications later, and it's become (to me) the perfect light, economical adventure touring machine. And funnily enough, I have yet to buy another bike. After ten years it still manages to put a smile on my face. Damn near everyone I've met always wishes they could have their first bike back. I'm never gonna let mine go.

It starts out with some character, but the soul evolves with the passion invested in not just parts, the parts stories, that affect you and the bike. It’s the soul the passion that you have and can invest bring fond memories...times rebuilding an intricate part the times you were proud of your bike over newer bikes...not even a little bit of shame, it is all stuff all inside of you that makes the bike...is it your soul that is now part of your bike? Yes, indeed Virginia, there is a Saints Clause.

In 50+ years of motorcycling, I've owned only 5 motorcycles. To me, my first new bike, a CB750K1 that I had for 22 years and rode all over the western US, had soul. If I found that bike again, it would still be my buddy. I sold it to buy a bike that would more comfortably carry my wife and I for touring. That replacement bike is a 1994 HD ElectraGlide, and we're still riding it after 27 years and 100000+ miles. My Harley has a name and it, to me, has soul. My other bikes were for commuting through the freeways of LA and San Diego. They were tools and, to me, did not have soul My brand new bike is a 2022 KLR650ABS Traveler. It may, in time, have soul for me. Oh, the places we will go!

ANY Bike you get a feeling from, that you develop some kind of history or relationship with - has soul - if you perceive it to be there. It's like any other relationship. Inanimate objects can absolutely carry, possess or be imbued with soul ... if you perceive it to be there, it is there. Look at WW2 Tanks and Aircraft ... painted with nicknames and devices of imagery - same thing!

Lem needs to read The Velvetine Rabbit. It is the stories, the associations, the meaningful imperfections that give "soul" to an object. The things that make an object, be it a bike or a guitar or whatever, more unique than matching items from the same assembly line. For example, I signed up for a couple of bike raffles when money ran out. The two that I wanted most were both Sportsters: one new, one used. I wound up winning the used one, and was grateful for it. For one thing, it meant something to the former owner, who had donated it to Paws Place Dog Rescue in North Carolina to help them recover from the loss of their building after the hurricane. That alone was meaningful, but there was so much more. It was 30 minutes from my parents house, so it was delivered to them first, and they brought it up to me on my wife's birthday. But the biggest thing of all is that the former owner had named the bike Maggie. When I saw that, it immediately reminded me of a neglected neighborhood dog that was running free without tags and stayed with us when we lived in North Carolina. Sweetest dog ever, and I wanted so badly to adopt her, but her people came back for her. She got out and visited us several times, including on my birthday shortly after she stayed with us, and shortly before we moved up the the Philly area. That dog's name was Maggie. The final kicker: I signed the tax paperwork to claim the bike 11 years TO THE DAY that this dog stayed with us. In a way, it's like the dog came back to us again, this time as a neglected Harley. Call her the Velvetine Sporty if you want, but this slightly rusty, quirky machine that I'm slowly getting into proper working order has more character and meaning than the new Sporty ever would have. Had I won the new one, I probably would have traded it in for an easier to handle machine (like a new Rebel) and some gear, because it just would have been a "thing". I'd probably trade in whatever that subsequent bike was for something newer later, because they'd just be tools. Maggie was meant for ME, and I will never sell her until I simply cannot ride anymore, and I find someone that can appreciate her story. She's bitten me as I've gotten to understand her, and while I've spent as much time wrenching as I have riding, I've started to understand her better in the process than I ever would have with a new bike. I'd almost certainly be better served as a new rider by a lighter, easier-to-manage bike. The Sporty may be the lightest Harley, but it's hardly light. But the associations I have with it make it irreplaceable. If that's not a machine with soul, I don't know what is.

Humans have such a deeply pro-social "pack-bonding" instinct - the drive that forms our social groupings and even allows us to adopt animals of other species as family - that we can extend those connections to machinery if we see that machine as an animated object. A familial connection to a motorcycle is not unlike a cowboy's connection to a horse. Doesn't matter if the bike is a CRF250L or an Indian flathead chopper. If your mind draws that connection and finds "soul" there, it's an honest feeling from a human core experience!

Every bike I’ve had (except for my first one) had and has a name. Some of them had more soul than others. It’s not the looks or the motor. It’s how I connect with the bike. My 800ST is not a very exciting bike to look at, but I can steer the bike with a twist of my eyes and the bikes responds smoothly and with poise. The connection between the bike and the rider is vital because we all put our lives on the line when riding. Great discussion! Keep it going.

Yes bikes have soul. Yes a stock bike can have a soul. My example is a s follows: I bought a brand new 2016 KLR650, a great bike. Storied history, people take this bike all over the world and do amazing adventures with them. Coming from a dirt bike background with Pentons, Huskys, ATK's i'm thinking a KLR 650 would be a great fit, sadly not so much. Then i rode a 2018 HD Streetbob and as Spurge said, OMG i must have this bike !! I felt so in tune with it, the road manners, the torque, power, for me, this bike has soul, so i bought it that day, no questioned asked. It's hard to imagine myself on another bike, and i know there are many, many great bikes out there, but my "bob" is my bike.

I don’t normally comment but this discussion got me thinking. I’m a relatively new rider and I learned to ride on an hold cb500 and to be honest that bike did nothing for me. I bought it fixed it up and learned to ride and moved on. But the first time I went into the local dealer after going to buy a new bike I saw a green Moto Guzzi V7III Stone and it just drew me in. I sat on it and it felt right. At the time I couldn’t afford it and I bought a bike completely different a Kawasaki versys and I hated that bike. It never felt right. I went through two more bikes and two years later that same guzzi was still on the showroom floor and I bought it. And that bike is my baby. Something about it just feels right. I keep it cleaner and more cared for than any other bike. It’s not the fastest or the most practical but it spoke to me in a way I never thought a machine could. I wouldn’t trade this bike for the world and I have dumped more money into modding and making this bike my own more than any other bike I’ve ever owned. They were all tools or just fun rides but this bike feels like an extension of me and I can’t describe why. This was long winded and probably not well worded but that’s all I could think about while watching this video. Great discussion guys!

I was hooked by "the cover" Cycle Worlds '79 CBX cover. Five years later I, more accurately my dad, took one on trade. I helped tear it down and rebuild, it, the previous owner dropped a valve when he missed a shift racing a KZ1300. It was the completely wrong bike to learn to ride on, but I did it anyway. I would love to have that bike back in a heartbeat, I loved riding it, but I never quite felt like we worked well together. We got from point A to point B. Fast forward 30+ years and I'm getting back into bikes. Took my newly endorsed licence and went shopping. The Concours was nice, rode great and felt well mannered, but it wasn't "the one". Then I went and tried out 2 separate R1200RTs from the same shop. The '06 was red, not my first choice for color, the '07 was white, kinda thought that would be the one. We took both through the test loop and the '06 and I started rough with a wide turn or two, but then we pulled onto a long straight stretch. The guide hit the throttle and away we went. The same loop on the '07 was fine, a bit "grumpy" when shifting, but it didn't feel the same when we rolled the throttles and let loose. That evening as I rode the '06 home, it settled into the highway and 75-80 just felt right on it, even riding at night. If I don't take it out on the highway once or twice a week, it does seem to run rougher, almost like it needs to get out and "stretch its legs" a bit and then we find some backroads and kick back. Its picked up a few nicks and scratches along the way, a few buffed out and a few not so much. Now to see what multiple of the miles I purchased it with we can rack up. (first goal is 6 figures) Yeah, I think bikes have soul. And I think a certain 250 Nighthawk was freaking amazing because it put up with me and temps in the low 20s during my MSF class and never gave me any trouble. :)

With 8 bikes in the Arsenal ranging from 1973-2004, I can definitely attest to the soul in the bikes. 1973 CB350F all original, very, VERY good cosmetic and mechanical condition and just a tick over 11,000 miles. 1975 CB550F with 30K on the clock and again, in Very, VERY good cosmetic and mechanical condition. 1974 CL200 project with a huge story on how I obtained it. Two 1975 first year GL1000 Goldwing's, a 2003 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Custom with just over 5K, 1986 GL1200 and lastly the 2004 GL1800 with 65K (ish) miles. Each has its own soul and each are all original. Any dings, cosmetic issues etc. have earned their marks. Each requires that certain amount of individual care, just like any living thing. Akin to growing an Orchid vs a weed. Some require constant loving care, others simply work. So....do they have soul? Do they tell a story? Do they take your own soul when you're clicking down the road? Absolutely! Some are tame until you need them to be more. Some are more right out of the box and demand more respect and reverence. Cheers! Zip~

I feel that the soul of a machine comes from the idiosyncrasies that arise from the slight variances in manufacturing and wear. Motorcycles today tend to have less soul than older motorcycles. Whether you name your bike or talk to it doesn't matter. It's when, on a cold morning, you adjust the manual choke and hope the solenoid is dry or line up the compression stroke for the twentieth time on a kick start that the curses under your breath coax that soul to the surface.

Others feel like they are almost happy to be thrown into corners and do it easily. Some bikes have character but they only get "soul" if you actually in person take care of the bike.

It's all up the individual.... exactly like music. I've known people to literally cry (Tear up) while listening to song that I thought was boring or poorly written etc.. However, I cannot argue the results that THEY got. They just dont apply to me because the source material doesnt resonate with me. I ride Cruisers, Spurg* can tell me all day long that an Adventure bike has Soul... I dont see it, and I wont see it because I find the "Standard" seating position indescribably uncomfortable. At 6'2'' and 250 lbs, the relaxed feel of a "Feet Forward" position, sitting down.. kind of IN the bike, rather than ON it, makes me so in tune with the machine. Raider, Stryker, Sportglide, Breakout... and yes my little Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom. I love my little Vulcan... I FEEL that bike. I can't explain that... it's just.. MY BIKE" idk man... none of my friends understand, my Dad only rides the Road King.. buys a new one every year. It speaks to him, I dont get it, and he can't wrap his head around why I like what I like. Maybe the word "Soul" is synonymous with "Connection". Maybe "Preference".

I’d have to say that “soul” and “character “ can only come with age and familiarity over time. Some people might call “flaws” character or soul but I’d have to say it’s how you two interact while riding.

Good day! i believe the bikes have a soul. My bike Yezdi roadking(derived from the classic JAWA250 ). note: ive ridden alot of the classics but none feels like this one, i know there are bikes like this around, this one is living, done 300,000 kms on it- never let me down, always got me home, has taken me through adventures, initially it was hard riding she tried many many times to kill me ha ha ha . I know its hard to believe in sprits , but .. on 2 of my rides i have seen them at the side of the road- the bike is pure magic to ride- not very powerfull. I have a beautiful MV agusta F4750 and 1000 the f4 750 strangely feels like she has some soul but very locked up. I kept saying its my mind - but i could get onto the bike and ride forever, i earn peanuts for a living but all the money is to ride and ride. ha ha ha. I cant explain it but when you know the bike is holding back alot be careful shes going to try to get you off untill she allows you. Happy riding!

Sounds like you guys are talking about the daemon from His Dark Materials: not something that exists separate from the rider. I've had my Moto Guzzi for 9 years now, and it's been fairly modified. For me the quirks of the machine are its character, and part of why I love it. But the shared history, the fact that it was my first big bike, the fact that I know how it will behave in most situations, the fact that I've done most of the mods myself, and it's set up for me, the places it has taken me are all it's soul. Good topic.

I'm with Lemmy :) Soul is for the living, who instill themselves in the people and things around them, but those things do not then become soulful. Just reminders of the true soul that effected it.

My first bike was a CB500F, second bike was a Ninja 650. The Ninja was the better bike in terms of performance, looks, function, everything. But I didn't feel drawn to it like the CB500F. I felt sad selling the 500. I don't think I'll be as sad selling the 650.

I really think Lemmy is on the same page here. He's just getting caught up in definitions. To him, the soul comes from the bikes previous owners and to the other guys it might come from time they might have spent riding or modifying the bike.

I think idea of "soul" or "character" has a lot to do with unpredictability. I've owned many old classic British sports cars and one Porsche. The Porsche was dependable, and precise and had amazing handling, but it wasn't as fun as the British cars. I think this was because you knew you could easily roll the Jag, and that you never knew if the electricals were going to break down at any moment and leave you stranded somewhere. It's like a friend said when I asked him why we (both) kept dating crazy women: "Well, ..... it's never boring" LOL In both cases it creates feelings which you won't get with ol' dependable. It's also the sounds and smells and feel of them. (the British cars, not the women) Even though the Porsche was arguably a better piece of technology, it's the Jag, Triumph, the MG or the Austin Healey that I still miss today. Maybe it's the fact that the you have to really take care of the British cars, and maybe that brings out the father instinct in us. Maybe that's why we love them. (could be true of the women as well)

A motorcycle’s soul is the designers soul pored into the bike because where does inspiration for anything come from? The more the motorcycle’s soul matches your own the more you love it. I have a Concours 14 & an XR650 Honda(amongst a few others) which probably wouldn’t seem soulful to many but I wouldn’t trade them for any other bike out there. Batman

Discussions of soul = guys fighting online about whose bike is better, especially non japanese bikes vs japanese. Essentially, a waste of time that could be spent riding. The discussion here did start out with a good definition. Soul, if anything, is the personal relationship, subjective response, and experience. However, The conversation goes straight back to unproductive when engineering flaws get classified as soul in themselves.

Coming from the car world I believe it has more to do with the feedback you get from the controls. A Toyota corolla has no soul, it is the definition of an appliance. An S2000 has soul. Bikes are the same way, if you can't get anything out of the bike then it can't have soul.

Characteristics of a bike point where it will go (the type of soul it will have) Who takes it where, the effects that trip have on it and the rider, and in what condition the bike returns in will give the bike soul to its owner.

Every motorcycle not always has soul right away after a few rides but they always have characters or personalities, no matter its performance, design, features, etc. Brand new motorcycle with heritage, story, culture, long history, large community from its predecessor not necessarily has soul, it just add historical and heritage value to motorcycle, it makes you appreciate more the motorcycle and makes you belong to its culture and community. I think there's a misconception about that kinda motorcycles, I thought many rider said right away motorcycle has soul especially to classic/retro/heritage looking motorcycle or even vintage/secondhand motorcycle with cultural heritage. Soul, I reckon is something personal, sentimental, historical you put to motorcycle. You can say motorcyle has soul when you see part of yourself.

i'm 100% with Lemmy. and in fact, kitchen appliances are the first parallel i draw when i hear people discussing a motorcycle's soul. i've been with my bike for tens of thousands of miles, but it's no more precious to me than my microwave (and i hardly ever use my microwave). if it ever gets stolen, my first thought will be "hell yeah, that insurance is finally gonna pay off!" maybe i'm just cynical, but i wonder if the concept of soulful motorcycles is just a masterclass in successful marketing. if Panasonic managed to convince people that certain microwaves had 'soul', their shares would skyrocket. but then again, maybe i just haven't found the right bike yet...

I think that bikes start out with characteristics, and those characteristics speak to us as riders; they reflect us. And through that connection of like characteristics: our machine starts to acquire a soul. My friends and I are a mismatched crew of motorcycles, from sportsters, to super sports, to ninjas to tourers and nakeds. But our bikes reflect our personalities.

I traded an Iron 883 for a Kawi Versys and immediately regretted it...because the Kawi had no soul. The Versys was a great handling bike that did not invoke any emotion. I'm back on a Sporty (now an Iron 1200) and will probably stay with H-D for that same reason. Soul!

So interesting that you say that. My buddy had a iron 883 and I had the Versys. Totally agree re: Versys. I know what you mean. But also, completely disagree because what the hosts mention. I did over 20k on the Versys and miss it because of the things and times I experienced on it: Blast out to Brooklyn from Chicago with a buddy for his birthday; road trip to New Orleans through thunderstorms; and a trip out west to Utah (ended there because of a damn deer).

There is a big difference between a Honda NC-700 or 750 that has basically half of a low revving Honda Fit car engine, and a 1936 Harley Knucklehead. As long as the owner of one does not belittle the other. As the American Angst website shows, one brand's owners tend to be more anti-freedom and are free to be dumb.

Great video interesting question I think it also depends on you and how much time you spend with your bike I'm a newbie I have one motorcycle I've been riding for less than a year my bike and I haven't quite bonded I had help picking it out but the bike that I felt something for I was talked out of because of price and other factors question would that have been the soul I was feeling connecting to me or just wanderlust
