Well, that´s the knitting podcast I´ve been looking for! From one grumpy, opinionated, monogamous, bottom-up-loving knitter, who started at the age of ten, to the other: thank you for being here and giving your opinions so freely. What a joy to finally find a like-minded person :D ps: I love your designs!

would love to hear your hot takes! you seem so knowledgeable about knitting and yes, it seems like succeeding as a knit designer is 90% marketing

Aw, thank you so much! 🥰 I’d love to share my hot takes! I plan to dive more into the wonderful world of knitwear design in the future. And yes, success in knit design does feel like it’s heavily tied to marketing. You could have the most stunning patterns in the world, but if you’re not putting yourself out there and engaging with the community, it’s hard to get noticed. It’s all about building a brand, being consistent, and showing up on social media (which is sometimes a total bother and honestly, it is a job in itself!).

About knitting bottom up - it´s just that it´s difficult to get the length right bottom up if you´re not sure about the upper body length on the garment. Some yarns grow when you wetblock them or when you wear them so you might like to shorten the hem but it´s more of an effort when the garment is knitted bottom up. And it´s so easy to try on when you start from the top - but of course there are other things that are easier bottom up. And about the new designs everybody wants to knit. I understand that there is a lot of new young knitters and they want to make garments that are trendy, but there seems to be problems: like the fact that some of those garments just don´t fit or look flattering on any kind of body shape. But as you said everyone is free to knit what they want. And every designer is free to design what they want and try to find own style. There is a lot of nice designs coming all the time so I suppose there is a lot of competition really if one wants to make a living out of it

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! 😊 You bring up a great point about the challenges of knitting bottom-up, especially with unpredictable yarn behavior after blocking. It is trickier to get the length right, which is why I think it's essential to knit a swatch and have a measuring tape handy. And yes, the top-down method does make it easier to try on as you go, but I still try on my bottom-up sweaters too. Depending on the project, I appreciate both methods-or even knitting sideways! I totally get the appeal of wanting to knit what’s trendy. Like I said, you can knit whatever you want, but I’d urge people to think before jumping on the latest trend. Will it actually fit me? Do I even want it to fit, or do I just want to knit it? I feel like there’s a bit of fast fashion creeping into knitting, which, to my mind, is supposed to be a slow craft. And yes, competition is tough, and I’m not expecting to become an overnight success. But it can be frustrating when a new "IT" designer comes along, copying what’s trendy and thriving. Like I said, maybe I’m just a little jealous. 😅 In future videos, I hope to elaborate more on my thoughts about making in general. It’s not just about trends-there are so many other important issues to consider, like sustainability and what’s actually good for the environment.

I don't agree with the statement that knitters are not brave enough to change the yarn color from the original requirement. There is nothing in this world that will make me search for a dark brown or orange yarn for a sweater. I know the colors that work best for me, and I use only them.

I think you might have misunderstood my point. I was repeating what I’d heard from a yarn shop owner, not saying I agree with it. I was more curious if others have noticed the same trend or if it’s more about following popular patterns and designers these days. It wasn’t meant as a criticism of knitters’ choices, just an observation I found interesting. But it sounds like you know your style and stick to it, which is great.

I also prefer bottom up design. All my vintage patterns are that way.

In an ideal world, the construction of a knitwear piece serves a functional purpose. Whether it’s knitted bottom-up, top-down, or sideways, the design shoulds consider both the knitting process and how easy or difficult the construction might be. Thoughtful design integrates both style and practicality. While I appreciate the charm and functionality of vintage bottom-up designs, I believe that the best construction method is the one that suits the design and the knitter's needs-whether it's vintage-inspired or something entirely modern.
