That's funny maybe not funny but I've been running the Trail King 2.4 on front and rear in San Diego with lots of sharp rocks up and down through woods, etc and never had an issue for about 3 years now on my Cannondale Trigger 2. I ride pretty hard and I've always thought "ok. That's as I've finally punctured it" but nope. I swapped the rear for a faster tire in the Mountain King and had it for 1.5 years now. No issues (knock on wood). Best of luck and happy riding.

Don't get the "wrong" Trail King is the correct way to say it. I run Trail King Black Chili compound Protection with Apex casing (on the rear... Der Kaiser Protection Black Chili Apex casing on the front) and they're dang near bullet proof... Never had an issue with tears, wear... Nothing... It took my derailleur snapping and ripping through the rear triangle with enough force to brake all the spokes on the drive side to rip the side wall. I run the same tire combo on both my bikes... And slowly the other guys I ride with are switching to Conti's... Having said that.. I can totally relate to a bad experience with a product like you've just had turning you off them. Nice babble again though... :D

NO!!! THEY SUCK!!! TIRE BRAND FIGHT! :P True, I had the bad ones. But at the end of the day, in what I ride, even when they held up they still didn't have the grip I'm used to from other brands. They were nice on loam, but then again that's not hard to achieve. What the heck did you do to snap your derailleur and break your wheel and triangle?
@TwoGuysOneVan
3 жыл бұрын
@@BlackBikes I think it was just a weak point in the construction... Landed a jump and BOOM! derailleur snapped just after the where that hanger bolt is and whipped through the triangle. I was pretty bummed about it... The Trail King is more of a "middle of the road" tire between rolling resistance and grip. That's why we throw them on the back... Der Kaiser is more in line with a minion and Der Baron is more in line with a magic mary (or at least that's how I see it). We have loads of high speed square edge sniper rocks here so I always shell out for as much casing as I can get. And so far the Conti's have been the more resilient and durable.

I have had one of these tires since about 2020 (was riding intermittently more laid-back XC-type stuff than you're doing). The Trail King is really an electric bike tire, so I actually think that it's a little thicker than, say, a Maxxis, and that presents its own advantages and disadvantages. I would have thought it would have been better in the desert, but the Trail King has a weird texture on the inside that may prevent it from sealing efficiently. I have had a hard time peeling out the caked-up sealant out of the inside. The tire I have is still holding up, but it does seem a little brittle. I think my Trail King tire has become deformed or asymmetrical; the wheel is trued to the best of my knowledge. I think it is kind of a dud. I pretty much agree with this review overall. I don't recommend it for a serious rider unless you're really on a budget; you'd be better off shelling out just a little extra for a more non-electric bike appropriate tire. I won't be using an e-bike tire on a non-electric bike ever again. I'm really surprised that you would get the runaround in Tucson bike shops. And, YES, this was one of the most difficult times I've ever had taking a tire out of a wheel and putting it back in. Amen!

I live in northern Utah and get in around 400 miles of trail riding per season in Moab in addition to local riding and there are plenty of sharp rock zones in both places. The B+ tires (wierd designation) from Conti are great. I run the black chili, Apex Trail King 29x2.4 up front with the black chili Mountain King on the back with no problems. Fast and durable. I expect you got the lower end model. They are also reasonably priced. There are steep loose areas where I'm using an Assegai front, Aggressor rear, but for most riding, the black chili works fine.

the lbs definitely dropped the ball there. but on top of that, with all the comments i'm getting, online as well as in in person, it seems that the compound of the trail kings performs rather poorly on the specific surface we're riding over here in southern az. the highly crystalline rocks and loose, sharp edged chunk we have here rips all kinds of otherwise fine tires apart.

You should investigate further. Might be some stupid mistakes as well, like ... those tires were left out in the heat and dry while folded. But everyone is different and everyone rides differently.

i have. it looks like the compound of the trail kings isn't all too compatible with the surface we shred our tires to pieces here in southern az. it's a very crystalline and loose rock mix, and other otherwise perfectly fine tires don't hold up either. that, and one can never rule out the lack of finesse in my riding of course.

First of all, if you're pinch flatting and puncturing that often, learn to ride better and stop t-boning obstacles. How is it even possible to pinch flat a properly inflated tubeless tire? I haven't been able to do it in five seasons of riding tubeless. Haven't tried Trail Kings, but Mountain Kings and Cross Kings are excellent tires that are very easy to mount tubeless, and with Shieldwall construction they are anything but light duty tires. Are Maxxis good tires? Yep, and they should be for the outrageous prices they go for. Disagree with just about everything else you said. Gorilla tape doesn't eat tubes, doesn't prevent inserting a tube, hasn't flaked even when used for more than one season, and the adhesive is easily removed with isopropyl alcohol. It costs a fraction of dedicated rim tape, and I've used it to successfully mount non-tubeless tires on 26 inch legacy rims that bike shops told me were impossible to run that way. Oh yeah, I am a professionally trained bike mechanic.

I think part of the problem with Contis is that they have a definite entry-level $40 tire and a very good top tier $80 tire. Maxxis, conversely has, I counted, 7 different options, eg, on a 2.5 DHF with a gradient of prices. You can get a slightly cheaper Maxxis for a small sacrifice in quality. Continental's options are simpler, but lack that nuance.
@BlackBikes

that's a valid point. thing is though, unless you hit that top tier contis leave a lot to desire for, while all (yellow label) maxxis are at least mid tier and above. if i had the money i'd run assegai all day long, every day. with my budget, and keeping in mind we over here in southern az ride nothing but super sharp rocks and keep wearing tires down way quicker than most, i'm slapping on whatever my lbs has on sale.
