Frogs are seriously wonderful creatures and can be amazing pets. I absolutely love my two Dumpies and they bring me so much joy. I'm a frog fanatic but even I know as much as I love frogs there are some I would find challenging to care for. They're definitely the kind of pet for specific kinds of people. The most challenging I find about frogs is the lack of information and research on their care and husbandry. When one of my dumpies was not eating I struggled to find information on how to deal with it. Luckily between my efforts and my amazing vet my frog is healthy, happy, and back to eating!

Hello, I’m a proud and sad handler who had a pair of wild caught Green Frogs for nearly a decade. The best thing about frogs is they’re vocal (but you won’t need hearing protection). The biggest challenge to keeping them is they generally need two environments to thrive. Otherwise, they need strict environmental regulation. Average frog? Half filled fish tank. Never did get mine to breed, though 😢. They’re active, they have personality, are attractive to look at, and are interesting. IMHO.

Such a good question! My hunch is that tourist places selling them as souvenirs in plastic buckets and not actual animals killed the allure. Kids buy them, they die off, and the experiment is over. Whereas keeping them properly is both awesome but somewhat unheard of (at least where I live)
@awesomeanimalswithalishav5874

Hermit crabs are still around, but many people realized how horrible the situation was and stopped promoting them. For a really long time all hermit crabs were collected from the wild. Many died on their way to souvenir shacks, then most of the rest died when tourists took them home and didn't know how to care for them. They're not hard to care for if you have a good enough set-up with an aquarium section and spend a lot of money on it all, but most people really thought they could just have little bowls of water for them. Lately people have been learning more and there's even a very few people who have managed to breed them, so it's getting possible to buy captive bred from places like Josh's Frogs. Crab Central Station has a really good channel about them.

Ugh I know that fragility all too well. I worked at a big box pet store and they decided to put the dart frogs on sale at the height of a polar vortex. About 4 different customers snapped them up in one day and took them outside in -10 degrees. They didn't even make it to the car and we lost every single frog that was shipped to us. We even asked the customers if they had a way to get them home safely and they said yes. Then we were promply yelled at for selling "defective" animals. I'm still traumatized...

Yeah I do not recommend working at a pet store. I might be more biased because I had the worst managers, but the animal welfare issue is too much. I have so many messed up stories and I feel guilty all the time. Here in the US our laws are a joke. My state requires a permit to adopt squirrel off the street but you can walk into any pet store for pythons or tarantulas and stuff.

We adopted 3 American green tree frogs from a rescue a wk ago including a waterfall style terrarium and before we could get them adjusted to our house, within 24 hrs the weather dropped from 73down to 53 degrees during the day and in the low 30s at night. One got skinny and died yesterday morning. The other two are not chubby and plump like they were a couple days ago and I'm worried. My daughter gave all of her money she saved up for this adoption because she adores frogs. The adoption included a chubby frog as well. It seems fine so far living in the mud in the back of the tree frog enclosure. Climbs out at night. I don't want them to suffer and my daughter would be devastated for them to all day this soon. What a waste of $175!!
@ledumpsterfire6474
Жыл бұрын
Being a big box pet store, it was probably both. I stopped buying live feeder mice from PetCo because about every 1:3 were visibly sick upon inspection, and since I didn't know what was going on with them, I wouldn't feed them to our ball python. I stopped going to them altogether because I'd always notice an animal was sick and bring it to their attention. They'd say "oh yeah, we'll definitely get someone to take a look at them." I'd go back two days later to see them still just sitting there in the enclosure. I'd just buy them myself to get them to a vet and try to nurse them back to health, since the store obviously wasn't going to do anything, and ideally find someone to adopt them out to if they came back from the edge. Was only successful maybe half the time, usually they were too far gone. But yeah, animal sales laws in the US are hot garbage. Personally, I feel exotic/non-domesticated animals should legally require certification. Nothing too crazy, but definitely at least a husbandry class dedicated to that specific animal. If you can't afford a few hundred dollars for a class, you can't afford to keep an exotic pet either, because they usually need complex diets and enclosures, and the first time they get sick it'll probably be a $500-$1k bill.

As a frog keeper, there's a problem I can identify: it seems the more engaging the frog is, the more downsides it has. For example, pixie frogs, pacman frogs, tomato frog and toads are quite easy as far as frogs go; fairly available, easy to house, inexpensive. On the other hand, these sorts of frogs are kinda boring. On the other end of the spectrum, dart frogs are incredibly wonderful to observe; absolutely beautiful, endearing and active. However, in addition to being particularly fragile, they are microphagists which is annoying. Tree frogs also have some liabilities, while also being very rewarding. I don't mind since I'm willing to put up with fruit flies and I still find joy in the more sedate frogs, but its these reasons why frogs in general aren't the best starter herps. The solution therefor is arguably the tiger salamander. Housing them is easy, terrestrial salamander care is fairly similar to that of toads and other terrestrial frogs, they're big and colorful, and they have a very engaging personality, reputably begging for food and otherwise acting like leopard geckos. Except they aren't widely available captive bred...

so glad you uploaded today. my green anole Blue just died. She was my first reptile. She's what got me into this hobby. I now have a 14 month old beardie. A male anole, and a western hognose. I love them all so much. Your vids always get me excited about these animals. Even ones like this where you say don't get them lol. I buried her under one of our trees and put a nice stone over her. Rest in peace Blue, thank you for inspiring me to get into reptiles and learn how much I love all animals and especially reptiles and amphibians. you will be missed and remembered. ❤

Green anoles are native down here in SE Texas. If you like the anoles look up Cuban Knight Anole, very similar to green anoles but 3X the size.

I got my chubby frog knowing I'd rarely see him; but he's the opposite, he's constantly in the out either in his water dish or on top of his background (they're actually quite the climbers). Now that I know I can maintain his humidity well just with manual misting I'm slowly getting an azureus dart frog set up made from a converted aquarium.

I thought I was going to have to unfriend you 🤣🤣...kidding. You are 100% correct that they are not for everyone. Sometimes they are a little more work than most reptiles in the cleaning because of their permeable skin. I am always cautious and only handle with super clean and rinsed hands and that is usually only for the Dumpies. I'll wear gloves for the others. The Vietnamese Mossy frogs need a large water area so I have a full water bottom tank. They are always swimming around. But with that, more time for water changes. At the end of the day...frogs are my ❤️🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸

I adore everyone on this channel. All these wonderful people and there amazing amphibians. Has me reliving what my mom called my "zoo". I had a deep passion for amphibians ever since I watched the crocodile hunter as a boy. I have owned and studied every possible species I could get my hands on and mossy were spectacular creatures. My favorites were always my red eyes and my dendrobates pumilio (strawberry dart) but mossy are top 5. They are a joy to look at.

My favorite part of frog care is making sure they don’t eat too much dirt (looking at my Pac-Man frog who doesn’t eat in the feeding enclosure so I have to pat down the substrate in its house)

What a bunch of bullshit. You didn't talk about pacman or toads. As long as they have a hydration pond and it's kept clean, they're easy to take care of. Of course there's a nocturnal thing which isn't a problem with me. My sleep schedule is messed up. I see my animals when they are awake at night. I wish I lived normal hours, but to have animals that live a similar schedule makes it easy. It's so much fun to get that eye cleaning rub from my toad because it's almost like she's saying hi to me. I make the same motion back when I see her.

Great video, although a little click-baity. I have dart frogs and love them, they're beautiful and fun to watch, and they breed and rear their own young which is a fun part of the husbandry. Also keeping fruit flies is awesome -- I don't need to go to the petstore to buy feeders anymore like I would for my previous herps. And for handlable my pets, I have my dog lol

i got some black and green dart frogs for my terrarium, only cause I'd already had the terrarium for months and the isopods we're thriving, so i wanted to introduce a little more fauna. i love them so much! it's really nice to have a pet that lives in its own world and that i don't have to constantly take care of (i love my cats, but I'm tired of making sure they don't eat needles and jump off the balcony and such lol) i love seeing how they both perk up and hop out of hiding when i open up their tank to release some extra fruit flies for them, and it's like a little game of i spy anytime i come in and want to say hi! since I've got an auto mister and a strong culture of zebra isopods always churning out some itty bitty babies that the frogs can scavenge for, it's such an easy thing to take care of (for me)

I think humidity is a huge issue when it comes to frogs. Once you can get that all sorted, it's smooth sailing. I just raised dart frogs from tadpoles, and had no clue they were this easy to keep. By far easier than my tree frogs.

Freezing them will probably reduce their nutritional content, plus frogs might not want to eat them because they’re dead.

Hi, Adam! Can you please do a video about the quietest frog species you own? And if males of that species are the noise producers or if females also produce some sound too? I live in an apartment with roommates so noise is a big consideration. Thank you for your educational videos :)

My 10 year old daughter wants a pet so bad. She's constantly trying to convince me to keep one of the outdoor lizards. She's missing having a pet because our senior dog passed away and we love animals. Can you please give me an advice as to what should I do?
