Folks, Steve Edwards has been through it all when it comes to mules. He has learned that the bone structure comes from the donkey, where there will be certain pressure points that can create problems. This is why Steve Edwards designs his saddles the way they are. So many riders want to turn Steve Edwards’ saddles into horse saddles. This will only harm your mule.
The back of Steve’s saddles are open. DO NOT close this gap and use a crupper ring. Closing this gap will rub on the mule’s spine. There are nylon latigos all the way around so that the cinch can be evenly distributed to prevent soreness.
Some cowboys use a billet. This makes it easier for the cowboy or cowgirl, but makes it harder for the mule. A billet makes it possible for mules to learn some bad habits. Do not change the design of Steve’s saddles. Everything on the saddle is purposeful and made to best fit the bone structure of a mule.
Pulling collars are also uncomfortable for your mule. Everytime you pull on the pulling collars, your saddle moves forward and the breast collar sticks out and doesn’t do you any good. Pulling collars are designed for a horse, not good for a mule.
Do not make modifications to Steve’s saddles. They are made to fit the bone structure of the mule.
