The expensive oil pastels for artists do not expired really 🤔, if you scratching them a bit! For the cheap ones you can boil it, in a small can into a pot of very hot water and adding few drops of coconut oil by mixing them properly and put them into a small tubes in carton done by yourself with scotch tapes and cold it into the ambiant temperature and use it back! You can adjust the amount of coconut oil drops, after trying one tube unsuccessfully, bc it is depend of the quality of your oil pastel crayons! 🤷♀️Concerning your small pièces of oil pastels you can use it with walnut, linseed oil, etc..., but not baby oil which your artwork piece will never dry out 🤭etc.. , after heated it a little bit with a art gun or with lighter previously! So you will be able to use it as oil painting by using a fine brush on it with artists oils, in order to paint small details in your drawings projects, or you can put a small piece of oil pastel into a small palette tray and add one to three drops of artist oil until the desire texture wanted and then use it in your drawing oil pastels for fine details too!😯

@@AstroNero. My dear friend KZitemr, go see my another advice that I had just posted it few minutes ago, the 2nd Agust 2021, about how to preserve our oil pastels from drying out in the plastic box with a sealed cover or in wooden box with metal closures when you don’t use them for a while by keeping them just like the brand new ones by taken good care of them for a few box to Dollar Tree , bc it is so pleasant to use this so versatile medium! Let’s having fun to use them by keeping the oil pastels in sealed container of any kind from drying out! It is so simple as solution finding instead to work hard by taking a lot of time to rehydrate them, in order to give them a second life!

Thank you for the test. I found this out myself today. Bought some individual Caran d'Ache Neocolor oil pastels from an art store that had them sitting out of the box on display for some time, and they are considerably harder and more brittle than my old sticks. They aren't creamy at all, even though the old ones still are. I recommend that anyone individual crayons try them out in the store and look at them closely. My "new" sticks have a pale, opaque sheen to them, like dried wax. Unfortunately, I had run out of one color while laying in a large flat area, and the new pastels won't layer properly w/ the old pastels, so now I have to start a new piece. I just wish I had known this before starting an 18 x 24 drawing.

Damn i thought this type of art material last a lifetime like good watercolor paints. Edit: after testing out my old oil pastels, i realized you only need to scrape out the dried-out outer layer by scratching it on paper or scraping it with a blade. No need to throw old oil pastels. My whites are so dry it looks like chalk though lmao!

I know this is an older video, but I thought I would add my experience. I don’t see very many people talking about the issue of oil pastels drying out (or, for that matter, the effect temperature/humidity at any given time can have on the consistency of oil pastels, which can make any user less able to reliably make a blanket judgment about a brand.) I went through a phase in 2019/2020 in which I discovered the existence of artist quality oil pastels and became kind of obsessed with them and bought a LOT of brands, all new from places like Blick. The brands I bought which I have come back to more recently include Mungyo Gallery Soft Artists Oil Pastels, Erengi (seemingly artist quality, very similar to Cray Pas Specialists), Caran d’Ache Neopastel, Cray Pas Expressionist (also bought the artist grade Specialists but I have not tried them in a long time), Holbein Academy (student grade, and I also got the artist oil pastels, but have not tried them recently.) In my experience ALL of these I’ve returned to have become harder, and not just on the outside, even though they were stored in normal indoor conditions. I live in an area with 4 distinct seasons and not a particularly dry climate. Sennelier has had the least change, and I thought it wouldn’t change at all, but just the other day (in summer) I noticed they were firmer than they used to be. Mungyo and Neopastels (which are extremely similar) have both become very dry and go on with much more friction than they used to. I had stocked up on boxes of 6 white Mungyo pastels because they were inexpensive and so soft and opaque, and they’ve all gone quite hard. Others, like the Expressionists and the Holbein student grade have just become closer to normal wax crayons. These were never really creamy to begin with - they were both always slicker/waxier, but now they are a bit harder. I prefer the change in these to the change in the Mungyo and Neopastels, which have gone from notably soft and creamy to hard/pasty and requiring more effort to even drag them across paper. The Sennelier seem to be a bit stickier in addition to firmer. The Neopastels are the biggest disappointment since they are quite expensive, and have changed quite dramatically. None of these are “expired” - They haven’t turned into hard rocks which don’t leave behind pigment, but their working qualities have changed a lot. I have not returned to the Holbein artist quality oil pastels, or the Specialists. If I had to guess I would guess the Holbein, if changed, would be a bit like the Mungyo/Neopastels. When fresh, the Holbein, though soft, seems more velvety/dry and less oily than the Sennelier.

So I recently bought a box of 96 neopastels by caran d'ache from an auction by an art supply store that was moving to another location. I bought them for around 40 euros, thinking I was getting an amazing bargain. However, once I opened the box, most of the oil pastels were covered in a hard white residue (probably wax). The packaging also looked different from the current neopastels, so they are probably quite old. Considering the water soluble neoart pastels I bought at that same auction had a price tag in Belgian franks (we transitioned to euro in 2002), they might be VERY old. Unfortunately these are my first oil pastels, so I have nothing to compare it to, but they are a bit "sticky" when putting them on paper. Pigment seems alright, so I'll see if I can use them with a bit of oil to ease the blending...

@Syndia Art Sorry for the long wait, I was quite busy at school 😅 When I tested the pastels the colours looked nearly identical, maybe the old ones looked a bit more greyish and less vibrant but the difference was really hard to see. Also the new pastels were easier to blend and looked smoother, it also seemed like I could put more layers using the new ones but overall the 6 year old pastels are still quite good and I'm definitely going to use them as well as my new set 😊

Ok, so I knew that oil pastels can kind of dry out and become harder, but I would have never though that one could notice this after only 2 years. I figured that this would take a much longer time, like 10years+. I feel like I have to use up all my oil pastels really quickly now, lol. I have this old set of Mungyo oil pastels, not the soft ones but the standard ones, that I bought from e-bay a while ago. I was surprised how hard they were, so I wanted to check them out online to see if this is normal for the brand, and I was surprised that I could not find that that package being sold in any stores. So I asked someone who sells art supplies, and they said that this package must be like 10-15 years old based on the design. And those things are rock hard, seriously, if I didn't know any better I would have been 100% sure that thse are wax crayons. They do still blend reasonably though. Not so much with my fingers, but if I take a cotton swap or a paper stub, they will blend. I actually still use them for some stuff, like for sketches outlines and bottom layers, and they also work quite well in combination with soft colored pencils, but nonetheless, they are definitely aged massively and I have learned from this experience that I will never ever again buy used oil pastels - ever.
