My top 5 would be 1: Fly over water as much as possible (helps a LOT since there's far less turbulence due to lack of thermals) 2: Sip ICE COLD non-carbonated drinks (water is best, but Powerade, or even water with a hint of lemon juice and ginger also worked for me, avoid strong drinks like orange/apple juice, anything carbonated, and anything dairy) Embrace the cold (heat makes motion sickness worse, so crank up the AC if equipped and turn the cabin into a snap freezer, fly during winter or autumn, and if all else fails, climb, climb, climb as high as you can) 4: Actually fly the aircraft (meaning hands on stick and rudder flying, not A/P) Ask anyone who gets carsick if they get sick while they're the one driving, 99% will say no, the same thing applies to flying, when you're at the controls, your brain is otherwise occupied with flying the aircraft, you can anticipate the forces when turning, climbing, and descending, it may not completely remove it, but it'll reduce the severity of it 5: fly as early as possible (less turbulence, lower temperatures, and far fewer thermals at 6am than 3pm) Oh and one important thing Also If you feel sick during a lesson, TELL YOUR INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY and tell him/her how bad it is 1-10 No flight instructor I know of will dock points for handing over the controls due to motion sickness, I actually got points awarded for good crew resource management when I handed the airplane to him if I was incapable of flying due to airsickness

Here's how I mitigated motion sickness when I went through flight school, it didn't completely get rid of it, but it was reduced to levels I could tolerate most of the time For preparation Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before (fatigue breeds airsickness) Avoid drinks like coffee or energy drinks (as tempting as they may be to fight off fatigue, just say no) Have a LIGHT meal about 2h before takeoff (avoid greasy food, dairy, and McDonald's or other fast food) eat to around 30% capacity, the point where you're not really hungry, but also nowhere near full, also avoid carbonated drinks or dairy for at least 8h before flying Tell your instructor before takeoff, and keep him/her informed during the flight, you will NOT get points docked for handing over control to your instructor while you chuck your guts up (that actually shows good CRM) and a good instructor won't dock points for you needing to stop doing maneuvers for a few minutes while you recover and get your bearings Drink water before and during the flight (I'd recommend bringing a thermos filled with ice water and mixed with a little bit of lemon juice and ginger) if you're feeling sick, just sip from it, enough to cool the inside of your mouth, but not enough to shock your stomach, or suck on an icecube THE COLD IS YOUR WINGMAN It's not foolproof, but blasting cold air on my face got rid of the worst of it for me, I still didn't feel amazing, but it helped a lot NEVER fly in summer, I repeat, NEVER... FLY... IN... SUMMER!!! Heat makes motion sickness 10X worse, as does intense direct sunlight (for me anyway) there's also more wind and stronger turbulence in summer I found the best time to fly was very early in the morning (6-7AM) when wind and turbulence was less severe, sunlight was less intense, and the temperatures were at their lowest, get to your desired altitude as soon as possible, then crank that cold outside air as high as it goes (or if your plane has AC, precool the cabin during taxi and run up, then, crank that shit to the max as soon as you can after takeoff) During my spin training, I actually brought a small 2KG oxygen cylinder onboard with me, and when I felt sick, I took a hit from it and felt better within seconds (not all instructors will let you bring one, but explain your reasoning and you'll probably be allowed to if you can stow it safely) During turns and pitch changes DO NOT MOVE YOUR HEAD (that will make it several orders of magnitude worse) When flying in windy conditions, look outside and focus on something in the distance (like a cell tower, the top of a mountain, a lake, a runway, or a building) if it's safe to do so (such as if you've handed over control to your instructor so you can recover) Looking at your instrument panel can also help with some people (particularly if your aircraft has a glass cockpit with a large ADI such as the G1000 package that my training aircraft had) Think before you move the stick, and try to anticipate what the plane is going to do and what it'll feel like, so you can mentally prepare for it (works great when I'm riding in a car and I can see the road ahead and anticipate the turns) Begin the flight with the mindset that you will NOT get sick (thinking about it and worrying about it just makes it worse) try to convince yourself that you are immune to airsickness and that it won't affect you (motion sickness is just as much a mental game as it is a physiological game) And finally Bring a few sick bags and a box of tissues with you, just incase Hope that helps, and happy flying

If you need ideas, listen; I'm REALLY thinking about getting into flying, as I've flown commercial (as a passenger) a fair amount of times. I must have developed some sort of anxiety because my last two flights I noticed at the start I tend to have anxiety. Not at all motion sickness, but fear about getting sick. I usually will pick a window seat. It helps A LOT. That way 1.) You get AWESOME views which mesmerize me and 2.) You can focus on the horizon to train your inner ear on what's happening. Other things you can try is playing a game. 2048 is my flight game because it makes your brain work, getting your mind off of your sickness paranoia. If you are not next to a window seat, dont move your head all around. Turn WITH your body to look out the window. This helps too. If you can help it, try not to have a sick bag in your sight. It just causes more paranoia and incentive for your brain. But do have it quickly accessible if you are the type to get sick. Also dont chug down your water in an effort to keep your vile down. Take small sips. What also helps me is wearing pants and a hoodie. HEAR ME OUT. It makes you feel more secure if you have anxiety. Plus it keeps you out of the cold with the A/C lol.

What really helped me during a turbulent GA flight on a hot summer day was to blast cool air directly into my face. There was an adjustable nozzle above me that basically saved me from throwing up. Yes 100%, cold air on your face is very very helpful! Yah food in your stomach seems counter intuitive, but the weight of the food keeps it heavier and more settled, so when combined with flexing your abs and stabilizing your core, reduces the weightlessness your stomach feels when you hit turbulence. Enjoy your next flight 🙂

The wing-over maneuvers as a passenger made me a little sick, but I did well to get to the ground. What's interesting is as soon as I took control of the wing controls, I instantly felt relaxed and settled. Being able to physically feel what the wing is doing and where you are going made all the difference in the world. I'm not gonna give up on this... I never did get seasick so either it worked or I wouldn't have gotten sick anyway. If you get motion sick often and chose to use Bonine, it's much cheaper to buy a bottle of 100 from the pharmacist (ask for a bottle of meclizine hydrochloride, maybe $15 or so) than to buy a pack of 10 tablets of the drugstore shelves.

That’s very accurate! That’s why people who get car sick are the ones who should drive as they are then in control. When I’m queasy in the back, I just look as far forward as I can and focus on the flight deck door or bulkhead, and use that to imagine the axis of the airplane so my eyes and ears have somewhat of an understanding of our motion. I tried most tips that you mentioned, but I still had it on my previous flight. Is it wise to take medicines to supress the nausea?😢
@AviatorInspirations
Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about the hard landings! It’s a little hard being in the jump seat, facing the rear, as your sensory illusions are backwards and much easier for the body to get confused. If you can look out the L1 door window it might help maintaining the horizon, but if it’s happening during landing, then I think tensing your core and activating your ab muscles will stop your stomach from being tossed around during a firm landing. Also your mind can make it worse, if you are constantly worried about getting sick, then your mind will make you sick, mind over matter, if that makes sense. So if you can, try and not worry about getting sick and just relaxing during the approach, and then tense your muscles on landing to stop getting tossed around, and then relax once you exit the runway. Let me know if any of that helps 🙂

I have the same issue. I love flying and turbulence has never made me scared or anything but I have gotten sick from it. I did my discovery flight recently and got a bit uneasy. However I loved the flight itself and I was a bit overwhelmed from being excited and with so much going on. It was crazy. I didn’t throw up but I could have if the flight was 30 min longer. I would like another shot to see if I could conquer the feeling. I’ll try eating more next time. I had skipped lunch before the flight. Thanks for the tips.

As a kid, I just used to take motion sickness preventing tablets but because of covid and other reasons, I haven’t been on a flight for years… hopefully the next time when I go on a flight, my body would be used to the sickness 😅 (but I wonder if growing up actually helps that or not)

I would say understanding how/why motion sickness happens and knowing how to combat is, results in a higher chance of not getting sick. You don’t grow out of is, as I can still get motion sickness if the conditions are just right, but knowing those conditions, I make sure I don’t put myself in those situations

How do I know if it’s motion sickness or anxiety? Or both? I get really nervous before and during a flight . Once on the flight I get nauseous.
@AviatorInspirations
2 жыл бұрын
It could be a combination of both, so the only thing you can do is figure out what’s making you anxious and try and relax. There is nothing to be scared of since you have a flight instructor with you, so just enjoy the training and go at your own pace
@mwbgaming28
Жыл бұрын
Anxiety can definitely do it During my first couple of lessons my anxiety was at its maximum just after takeoff and on final approach (literally no recovery altitude if something bad happens) The first and last minute of the flight pretty much set the stage for me, but as you fly more often, you'll learn to trust your equipment (or at least the engineer who maintains it) and that anxiety will go away I'd you're concerned about the engine failing, look outside and make sure you can see at least 2 places where you could land (could be highways, paddocks, bodies of water, a swamp.etc) If you're concerned about turbulence, fly over water (much less turbulence over water than over land) If you're worried about turbulence or sudden evasive maneuvers breaking the wings off, or some other structural failure, keep your airspeed in the green ark on the airspeed indicator (the speed at which the aircraft will stall before it pulls enough G's to break apart) If you're worried about hitting birds, ask to fly the lesson at a higher altitude where birds generally don't fly

Most definitely a bad experience. I too have the same fear. But I've flown quite a few times. It helps A LOT to look out the window. If you dont have a window seat, look across the left or right with your body, not just your head! It also helps to distract yourself with a phone game or movie if you're passenger with looking out at the clouds and horizon every other minute to get your inner ear back on track. I play 2048 when I fly because it helps my anxiety I get from the start of the flight (I still dont know why I get it). Its very distracting and makes your brain focus on the game rather than your anxiety (it's mostly in your head, not your stomach!) Music is indifferent for me - but it helps others!

Appreciate the video! I want to be a commercial pilot and have recently been getting sick when flying. I’m pretty sure it’s motion sickness, but what makes me think maybe it’s not is that I usually start to feel sick if I take I flight after eating food. Do you think this is motion sickness? I’ve only had this happen two times so far but it’s starting to make me worried.

Are you pulling those G’s all the time? Didn’t realize a PC 12 can pull that much, interesting 🤔. Well same principles apply as I mention in the video, but your focus should be on strengthening your core and when pulling G’s really tighten your abs and focus on your breathing. If you can get fresh air on your face that helps a lot too

I think some people are more sensitive to their environment. I was born sensitive to a lot of things. All my life I've been prone to motion sickness. My boyfriend was fine when he was a kid and then when he was a young adult it switched and he noticed he suddenly couldn't ride carnival rides anymore when he used to love them. He is prone to motion sickness now. I also wonder the science behind it.

Motion sickness is a very individual thing, some people could fly in an aerobatic plane while it's doing some of the most mind bending shit possible and not be affected Other people could get nauseous before they even become airborne Flying often will lessen the effects, cold temperatures help (a lot) and flying over water will give you the smoothest ride
