I had to put down a possum I found hiding in my coop last night... While I enjoy hunting, I never enjoy executing critters...It's illegal to relocate them in my state, if you can do that without getting bit. Not to mention releasing it would have lead to the same problem tommrow, or worse, a dead chicken. Thanks for the video.

Question, have you witnessed an opossum kill a chicken? Yes, they'll raid wild bird nests (way smaller than even a chick) for eggs or hatchlings. But chickens, as you said, are the size of an opossum - if not bigger in a lot of cases - so far bigger than what they will actually attempt to threaten or eat normally. The description you gave of eating just the head is spot on for raccoon's though. Opossums are indeed scavengers, but they prefer no conflict so will go after newborns, eggs, hatchlings, and things that are already dead. I lived among dozens of Opossum for a good 10 years with chickens. Several were even in and out of my coops fairly regularly (looking for eggs left out). Guess how many chickens I lost to opossum... none. In fact, I came to love them as they ensured no missed eggs would get rotten and attract bears. Bears on the other hand are jerks.

I got 3 backyard chickens recently and they were attacked on the very first night by a possum! I heard a commotion and went out to check and the possum was on top of one of the chickens. I threw a bucket of water on both of them and the possum let go and ran away. We seem to have been very lucky because I cannot even tell where the chicken got bit, hopefully the chicken doesn't have any complications. Now, I pick the 3 hens up at night on a roosting stick then take them into a small unused bathroom so that they are totally safe. The only thing that could get them is some snake crawling up from the drain!

I was curious about possums being a threat to chickens because I saw one come out from underneath my house last night when the security camera went off. I don't want to kill the animal if it's not necessary. And my chickens aren't small, all of them are going on 6 years old, healthy and still laying. My two roosters are very protective. I just wanted to make sure they were safe. Thank you for the video

I ABSOLUTELY HATE radical animal lovers who've told me there's NO WAY that a possum WOULD OR COULD kill a chicken. I made the mistake of telling my cousin-in-law that we had to kill a possum that was attacking our chickens. I was told by my animal rescuer cousin-in-law-"There's NO way that could happen, it's NOT in their NATURE to attack domesticated animals!!!" NOW I have the pictures of the DEAD carcass of our pet chicken to prove them wrong. I guess what I'm trying to say is, DON'T GET "GUILTED" into thinking you're bad for having to kill another animal to protect your own.

An animal attacked my golden laced Wyandotte. She's always the one getting hurt. She survived with a few scratches and her pearly white earlobe was almost falling off. She's okay now and she's completely healed. I think it's a raccoon because I saw 3 of them a few days later at night. After that night though, they didn't come back.

UNLESS, it's "sickly, (can't move very well), or dying in the first place! I really wish these "IDIOTS" would STOP spreading this bullshit! I have had Opossums IN MY RUN, and COOP, and all they ever did was grab an egg or 2, eat the egg, then mosey on over the fence.... I have even picked up 2 of them and put them over the fence....

A guy "in town" is claiming that an opossum killed "12+ chickens" on one spree after he was "gone for only two hours"... We went back & forth on it for a bit as I tried to pin down what the actual situation is and then he writes (This Is COPY & PASTE VERBATIM!): "I literally looked up. Will chickens kill opossums and in bold letters it said “chickens will absolutely kill and eat opossums”. And I can assure you that a fox couldn’t get into the area that our chickens were killed. " I don't know how some people find the floor to get out of bed every day! SMDH! I'm thinking fox or owl... What do you think?

This is FLAT OUT WRONG. MY ducks are far bigger than a chicken and just caught one that had devoured the entire duck minus the bones. Carcass was all that was left. And don't tell me it wasn't a opossum....shot it dead after it had finished its meal still in my barn coup that had ducks and chickens. Sadly, it had killed 4 previously before I killed it. *Edit* we kept thinking a fox was somehow getting in...or a bobcat....but finally found out last night that it was a dang possum. :( Sadly, too late for all but one of my ducks. So if you have ducks and chickens - it will attack the ducks first since they are on the ground while the chickens roost off the ground. So, I guess you could also save your chickens by getting some ducks. :(

Becky's Homestead My comment was mostly posted since there are a few comments here saying things like "The only good Opossum is a dead one." You might not have said outright to harm them but people still have a nasty biased mentality against Opossums. Growing up I've seen people being extremely cruel to them just because they "get in their coop" or "have rabies" (which is false as their blood temp is too low for rabies). They do nasty things like shoot them or grab babies, fling them into the air and let them shatter their skulls onto the road. 😢 It all makes me defensive when it comes to them. I was worried by the electric fence suggestion.. wouldn't it be enough to severely damage the lil guys? :( Their hands are so fragile like human hands.

I've had two possum issues with my chickens. the first managed to get in my Serama cage and killed one of my three Seramas. Luckily my sister heard the commotion and woke us up. we ran out and while I rescued the surviving two my mother took a shotgun to the possum. the second one got into our big coop and was munching on eggs. this one we captured in a cage and released it back into the woods behind our house. this one we did because it didn't harm the chickens and it was very young. We plugged the hole it broke in at and never had another issue. The vicious arse ducks now roaming the land helps. Lol they are fearless punks that attack everything. cats, roosters, humans, and (we think considering no more issues) possums

I hatch eggs. Over the years I have hatched many birds. I have lost dozens of birds to an unknown predator over the last couple years. The ducks always got hit the hardest. I finally trapped the beast. It was a HUGE possum, about the size of a small dog. Definitely bigger than my laying hens. I would always find dead birds with missing heads and empty craws. I thought it might be a skunk or raccoon, but I never saw signs of either. Its safe to say, this possum will not be killing any more of my birds. It had to be done. Last year I hatched 40 ducks, and only 8 survived. I couldn't figure out how it was getting in, and still haven't figured it out, but it won't be coming back.

I have had my chickens for 4 years now. I mostly let them free range until garden planting time then they are locked up. This time in 4 years something got in my run and killed 9 chickens in one night or morning because it was still fresh when I got home at 7 n the morning. the only way if is up and over a 6 foot dog kennel with chain-link fence for anything that would be to big to go though the chain link. I do have a chain link on top just open on the end by the coop and the front, something like a roof built from fence post and runners. So I was thinking possum or raccoon or maybe and awl. but neighbor said a weasel so I spend all day putting up chicken wire at least 4 feet up, and covered up all the large holes that I had up top. so fare so good. I have lost chickens to free range witch I know happens I started with 33 and now down to 7 I had 17 left after 4 years and in one day lost half. and all they or it did was kill most of them and only ate the heads of 3, and one chicken had its innards pulled though were the head was at. The others were just dead. Then the nest day it came back to just kill my roster. That's when I went and put the chicken wire up I had left from building a grow out. For meat birds.

I've had nothing but trouble from possums. I lost a hen to one a month or so back.. I must not have closed the door.. and just tonight I had one climbing the fence to get on top of my duck cage.. so I scared it off and it came right back and tried again... I tried to shoot it but I couldn't get it bc I was trying to keep the flashlight on it and it was hard to see... Wasted bullets and very disappointed.... Hoping I catch it in the daylight soon bc I'm on edge worried for my flock... Tired of dealing with predators...it's kind of stressing me out and I don't want the neighbor's to get mad.. I live out in the country and the closest ones are about 1/4 mile away but idk if they can hear a gunshot that far from inside their houses..

We had 2 ducks for 2 years, just got eaten. We had a yard fence plus wire fence plus converted dog house. Whatever got the duck dug under the yard fence, got into the fenced in area by unknown means, attacked the duck without spreading many feathers at all, took it's entire head and neck, partally pulled it under the converted dog house (4" above the ground) and then ate into the carcass from the rear end first, taking a few of the organs. We have seen foxes and coyotes about 1.5 miles away but never in our neighborhood. We have seen occasional raccoons and we've had an opossum in our yard a few times. 2 nights after the duck was killed, we just found that same opossum walking the perimeter of the duck fence. The possum has been eliminated (we still have one duck and wanted to make sure this problem doesnt recur)...but was it the culprit? Any insight appreciated!

Hi Becky, I think my post didn't go thru before the next video, sorry if this is a 2nd post.. okay, Love your shining personality! & I have a question about possums getting into coops, I have possums at the far end of my back yard. I have a really decent sized back yard, lined around the edges with trees, in StL city. I've been here 15 years and never paid much mind to the possums, feed them occasionally as I've read plenty of good things about them. My cats don't seem to mind them much, they certainly don't play dead, and stare at me like I am invading their space! they freak me out quite frankly.. any who, I got a few chickens this summer, built a nice coop, and didn't understand as birds of flight, they would fly over a 4ft fens - yes giggle it up ( : That said, the ladies roost in a tree by the house, and I put up a new - and much much higher fens - around their area including the tree.. the other night there was a possum trying to have a slumber party with my girls in the tree.. I now put them in the coop at night, bummer for them... I say all this because I am wondering - will a possum actively dig under the coop to get to the chickens? will they do so even in the city were there is a number of other - if not less desirable - ways to get food? Thank you!!
