Learning a few words in the local language seems like a no brainer to me. Not just for the Netherlands but for every country you visit.

Oh yes definitely! But you’d be surprised how many people have told me they never bothered with learning a few Dutch words since they assumed everyone spoke English 😅🤭

In the countryside 99% speaks English too, it's often just that if their last foreign vacation has been a while and their English classes decades ago, it's in the back of the head and it takes a while to move it to the front where the mouth is. In the big cities there's just too much exposure to English for that to happen. In many parts of the country Heineken is seen as the Amsterdam marketing miracle, while the down to earth people there don't let them be fooled by that. So they prefer Grolsch or Gulpener as a bit of an identity thing. That's in 'pilsener', lager beer. And there is speciaalbier as is not lager. The last decade there have emerged a lot of craft beers, but 'special beer' used to be almost synominous with Belgian beer. The triples, doubles, stouts, krieks, trappists, geuzes etc made so close by, every cafe or restaurants has at least some.

The majority? Yes but 99% is a bit much. The older people (70+) often still don't speak English.

@@gert-janvanderlee5307 Maybe 96% or whatever, the point is their English can be very rusty so they need a moment to adjust.

@@DenUitvreter Nope, much less. The people of 65 years or older is about 20% in this country and their knowledge of English is often mediocre at best.

@@DenUitvreter I said at best. That means much worse than that most of the time. Even people younger than that around here in towns like mine, and smaller cities practically never speak any English. They might understand it but that doesn't mean they still know how to speak it. So, 99% is way off. Even 75% is too high if you consider all ages nation wide.

More than 700 breweries and distillery’s and lot of Belgium and German beer available, so don’t worry you have to stick to Heineken, lol.

We wear orange because the surname of the royal family is Orange. The current king's name is Willem Alexander van Oranje

You could argue that Hertog Jan is technically Belgium yes because its owned by Inbev, but Gulpener is still Dutch.
