You hit the nail on the head, Dagan! These are SUBTLE differences that only a GUITAR PLAYER THEMSELVES would notice, but they're very important IF you're a guitar player! And yeah, KZitem compression makes it sound even MORE subtle than I know it does in the room. The FEEL of it, absolutely! And that cannot be conveyed via an online video at all. I'm not saying EVERY guitar should be a single pickup, cuz that lush neck pickup tone is certainly needed sometimes too, but for a straight up rock or metal tone monster, single pickup all the way! I also like to remove the tone pot entirely and tinker with the volume pot values or just remove the volume pot altogether and replace it with a simple on/off switch! Rock on, brother! 🤘

It's a minor difference, but you could further enhance the tone by turning the bridge pup around, taking the cover off, lowering it to the level of the trim ring, then raising all the pole pieces to compensate. Furthermore, if you took a 3 coil trim ring, pressed it against the bridge, marked the front of it (neck side), then cut a P90/Jazzmaster pickup sized hole, you'd have a more versatile location for a single pickup, and, of course, be able to fit a wider assortment of pickups. From there, you could load a slammed humbucker as I described, with the pole pieces towards the bridge, and it would pick up a significant amount of fundamental (in fact, an increasing amount as you fret closer to the bridge), while still catching a fair amount of harmonics with the slug side, too. All you gotta do is build a solid pickup with some neodymium magnets, then wire up some 1M pots with a no-load tone. Better yet, a no-load tone with a second tone circuit on a push-pull. Circuit one would be thick vs bright. Full 10 is no load, full 0 gives the full force of a 0.002 to 0.004 capacitor, just barely cutting some highs while the tone pot being on 0 gives it a mid boost. Circuit two would be mellow vs normal. Full 10 is a regular pot at 10, full 0 loads to a relatively normal 0.01 to 0.04 capacitor, but it also has a grease bucket mod so it doesn't get too dark/muddy, just more neck-pickup sounding. If you want more accurate measurements, set it up so the pole pieces are at the 36th fret location like a Rickenbacker bass. Also, you might as well get a 24-fret neck with this setup since there will no longer be a neck pickup in the way.

About the tonewood topic... I dont think anyone is arguing wether they make a difference in tone. Rather, i think its a question of does it actually make enough difference to realistically matter in an electric. Personally, I have no idea tbh. But i notice that guitars that are heavy and dont sound so bright acoustically make me play differently. Now, is that something that actually matters or something you get used to over time, I dont know. But some guitars just feel like home. :)

Listening on my iPhone thru $35 Tommy Hilfiger blue tooth headphones, I could still tell a slight difference. The single pickup seemed to have more depth, especially noticeable on clean tones. I don’t think I’d trade in my multi-pickup guitars bc I like the versatility of switching from neck to bridge (& there is definitely a sound difference between neck & bridge), as well as blending multi pickups. But . . . I’ve been thinking about getting a Les Paul Jr, and you’ve pushed me further in that direction!

Removing the neck pickup gives you better tones. The hole in the guitar somehow gives it more sustain. Depending on your pick attack, you get pinch harmonics as you strum closer to the neck as opposed to closer to the bridge. As you can see, my friend here plays soulfully without the neck pickup meaning he feels the groove because it sounds better!!!

I get the concept that having only one pick up can force you to be more creative since you don’t have a lot to work with and someone like Zach Wylde who only uses pentatonic scales and does not do any Taping or have a tremolo can push themselves creatively because they do not have a lot to work with is a good concept but why limit yourself, and having multiple pickups like a two humbucker or a humbucker and two single coils can also stir your creativity along with having a decent to massive pedalboard it all depends on what works for you, I personally like having more options when I play my guitar 🎸and as far as if the one pickup sounds better there is very little difference between the two i’d personally rather have both pickups options

Not enough difference to make any real world appreciable difference (I mean, your performance/ recording is not being listened to in the context of A-B’ing with something else, and no one cares). So the question is just whether you prefer the much greater versatility of multiple pickups, or the minimalism of a single pickup which is guaranteed to make you develop your touch and technique, and your mastery of the volume and tone pots.

Any effect to the single pickup is mostly negligible, it’s perhaps a little brighter (which isnt always a good thing) but the loss of tonal possibilities once the other pickup is removed is a far bigger problem in my view. Guess it depends on if you utilise the volume/tone qualities or if you’re an “everything up to 10” type player.

An electric guitar has too many options. Two or three pickups make it sound like 2, 3,4, or even 5 different instruments. Not to mention the amp settings and pedals you throw in there. A piano, trombone, or acoustic guitar player has to work with what they got. The player depends more on him or herself than the instrument. A single pickup electric like a Gibson Junior or Fender Esquire and a simple amp is pretty refreshing and you interact with it more like a traditional instrument.

Dylan talks tone did a test on this. You said it at the start yourself - the magnetic field above the pickup is very weak. And drops with the square of the distance. The presence of a second field, at the neck position, will not affect the movement/vibration pattern of a string as seen by the pickup at the bridge position. Adding a tone knob, as you said yourself, will make more of a audible change. But, if it makes you play different and you think it sounds better, then that's still valid and fine.
