Picture this: Anderson, Indiana, 1982. As my college roommate tells me, he and many of his hot rodding friends had air shocks on their cars. He drove a 1971 Camaro Z 28. They cruised Broadway Avenue. One night they were the the parking lot at their usual hangout, and one guy roars into the lot and yells, "Cops are busting for bumper height!" Every one with air shocks ran to the backs of their cars and dumped any excess pressure from their systems. You heard a steady psssssssssssssssssss from all the rear ends lowering at once. Any thing 3" over factory could get you a ticket.

Does bring back memories. My air shock experience was in my 1971 Pontiac Ventura. Only had a little 307 in it but of course I had to have the rear end jacked up to fit my Ansen Slots and 60 series tires. It was 1978 after all. I can still remember going to Kenny’s Boron and filling them up. They did have a tendency to leak off after a while. Since his car belonged to your Dad I would go whole hog on it if I were you. Take a few years and really do it right all the way. Keep it as an heirloom. Peace.

In 79 I got my 1st car a 70 Dodge Charger RT. I bought a set of G60's on Cragar slots for the back but didn't have the money for air shocks so I had my dad make me a set of 8" shackles to get the back up a bit. My 2nd car was a 68 Chevelle. That had air shocks. We really didn't care about ride back then. It just had to be cool. I'd never do that again. Now I go for upgraded handling. Big sway bars, firm springs and high performance shocks, 18" low profile tires and faster steering.
@snickelporp

I am exactly one month younger than your dad so I can fully relate to the 80's car scene of his time. Yes, air shocks did not provide a comfortable ride but a very stiff one and were basically used lift the rear enough to get those bigger tires under them. I don't really remember any other inexpensive options available for lifting the rear because many of us were dirt poor back yard mechanics and buying a cheap muscle car, adding air shocks, aluminum slots and thrush mufflers pretty much tapped us out. Any extra money was used to keep the thing running so we could go to work and make money to keep the car running...a vicious circle but those were the good ole days that I wouldn't trade for anything. I'm looking forward to seeing where you take your Mustang and I'm sure no matter what you do it will be perfect!

That red truck is the same type of project truck that I've got. It's a 1954 F100. I ran a pair of air shocks on my 1965 Mustang coupe. I ran them aired all the way up for almost 2 years ( with no problems from them ) . I ran a pair of 15" Magnum 500's off my 71 Mach 1 on the back with a wider tires. If you run them all the way up you need to realign the front suspension. Raising the rear changes the front caster. So you need to compensate for that to keep decent handling.

Yep, Gabriel Hijackers...my Brother had a set on them on his '67 GTO, and you're right, they made the car ride like a buckboard, but it did allow for larger tires. I, too had air shocks (Monroe) on my first '67 Mustang. Yes, they rode hard when inflated to 100#, and I heard of other owners who ran the cars hard, that air shocks and unibody cars are trouble, and some even punched through the top mounting, so you might want to look at this area for torn or distorted sheet metal, accessible through the trunk or maybe the back seat. Very impressive that the shocks still work. Yep, they were all the go in the 70's, we put them on everything. Really good when towing a heavy load. The biggest problem was not the ride, but that they were dangerous. If they were pumped up really high (some is cool, more is cooler) when cornering, the air in the outside shock would be pushed to the inside shock and cause the vehicle to lean more (jack up). This happened because the two shocks are connected to a single junction. The fix was to run seperate lines for each shock and put in equal pressures. We have progressed a lot since 1970. Get your spring and shock combination sorted with todays technology and you will be much happier.

I've been involved with vintage Mustangs since 1985. I currently own a 1970 Sportsroof Mustang. You'll want to get rid of the air shocks. Your dads car is what is now known as a day two car. What people would do back in the day was buy the car off the showroom, then as soon as possible (usually the next day), start modifying it. Headers, louder mufflers or deleting stock mufflers and resonators, new carburetors, wheels and tires, funky paint jobs, and things like air shocks and aftermarket shifters for manual cars. Google "day 2 muscle car" and "street freak muscle cars" to get the full effect of that late 60s to late 70s style.

Very cool video. I'll admit I was surprised they still worked. As for today, I wouldn't put them back on. In fact lots of people such as myself are going the other way. That being lowering. It lowers the center of gravity and allows the car to handle better, plus helps prevent air from flowing under the car and getting trapped in the wheel wells thereby improving aerodynamics slightly. But that has more to do with springs than it does shocks.

I've never had air shocks, but I've ridden in a few cars which did, and it was a stiffer bouncier ride, especially if you were riding in the back seat. When I was a kid, my older neighbor had a 1972 Pontiac Lemans Sport. It was burnt orange with a black vinyl top, and a tannish brownish interior with buckets and a console. It also had Pontiac Honeycomb wheels! (Not the same as Trans Am Snowflakes.) He got the car painted dark brown and put a set of Cragars on it with some High Jacker air shocks and some louder mufflers. The shocks evidently came with stickers, because he put them on his quarter windows. The sticker depicted a rabbit with his ass end up high like a Hot Rod, and accentuated the rabbit's larger rear legs as they dwarfed his front legs - like big-and-little tires. I think Gabriel made High Jackers? Later when my neighbor went to college, he removed the stickers and ditched the Cragars for a set of Pontiac Rally IIs.

Currently got a '87 wagon with air shocks, the ride for me is pretty much just the same regardless if they're empty or full.

I’ve had a few old cars that’s had air shocks and currently own an 81 Camaro that’s got them for the moment.

You have to have some fun too Cooper it does not always have to be serious. I remember these hijackers they sat on many different cars here in Sweden in the late 70's early 80's, but I did not use any I lowered my car so it was low instead.

Gabriel Highjackers were the creme dela creme back then. Thing about the air shocks yep most just stuck and air hose to them, never using a pressure gauge. I have a set and set them at 40 psi and the ride is as good as monroe sensa traks. Mine are on my '60 Fury. I don't lower cars I try to keep stock ride height. But my '60 Fury also has 14" shackels as well.

Not sure if you have yet, but go watch the John Carpenter, Stephen King movie 'Christine'. You'll know why once you see it.
