"Do the dolphins at Loro Parque have too little space?" Many people ask this question because they heard about wild dolphins, like bottlenose dolphins, swimming hundreds of kilometers a day and diving hundreds of meters deep. We talked to the conservation officer of the Loro Parque in Tenerife, Wolfgang Rades, about this question.
The expert takes us along and shows the multi-basin system for bottlenose dolphins in one of the best zoos in the world. In fact, that far exceeds the requirements for such a group of animals. In addition, Wolfgang Rades explains what is really important to make Atlantic bottlenose dolphins resident in ecotypes comfortable in human care.
In fact, the bottlenose dolphin family origins from the resident ecotype that inhabits coastal areas. They neither dive deeply nor travel far. This distinguishes them from migrating ecotypes, such as representatives of the transient ecotype.
The first dolphins that came to Loro Parque a few decades ago arrived from Florida. They came from the wild to the Dolphin Research Center and then were moved to the zoo on Tenerife. Paco, Pacina, and Ruffles are now over 30 years old, which is remarkable as most dolphins in nature do not even have the possibility to celebrate their 18th birthday.
The breeding works well and Loro Parque is part of the European breeding program, which has been independent of wild captures for many years. Also thanks to the Loro Parque, a self-sustaining breeding population could be established in human care.
In Loro Parque, Tenerife, the animals live in seawater that comes directly from the Atlantic Ocean. Of course, it has to be filtered due to the massive marine pollution and so the animals have the luck to live in Atlantic water as it should be: clean and without pollution.
Modern dolphinariums are places of animal welfare: bottlenose dolphins live longer in accredited dolphinariums (Willis, 2011), are healthier (Fair et al., 2017), and less stressed (Monreal-Pawlowsky et al., 2017) than their wild counterparts. They enjoy training and even pour out happy hormones during training sessions (Clegg et al. (2018); Ridgway et al., 2014). More than 80 of the world's most renowned scientists in this field support marine mammals' husbandries in modern zoos and aquariums, emphasizing the enormous importance of these populations for important conservation projects and science.
In addition to the bottlenose dolphins, at Loro Parque, there is a second dolphin species: the orcas, or killer whales. Do they have enough space? You will learn about that in this video:
