This was so helpful! I ride English, but my son is getting into Western. I bought him a Western bridle that had bit ties, and was at a total loss. Thank you!

Looks like a Threefold Over-hand Knot (ABOK #517) with one strand held straight. It is of course a knot employed and invented/reinvented everywhere on this earth where rope was used, so it will come under many names.
