Back in the day, my dad wrote every dealer in Los Angeles that sold the type of vehicle he wanted figured out what their cost was and he added $500 and he told him that if there was one month where they needed one more sale to make their bonus or whatever that he was ready and willing to go.. He got a bunch of calls but he didn’t waste a lot of time with them he just said my offer is in the letter it’s a take it or leave it and most of them went away but one guy said I can’t do it right now, but if you’re still interested in a month or two I think I can do it at the end of the month when I need another sale. My dad told him to give a call whenever he was ready showing up to much later on like the 29th day of the month the guy called and said I have your car and actually it has a few extra bells and whistles on it which I’m not going to bother asking you for more money because I know you’re not going to do that so bring me a check for what we have a greed and the car is yours my dad went down and got the car that day old school

This is spot on! Thank you for explaining this process so well and giving me the confidence to do it. I did just as you said on a 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid in the Pacific Northwest - a difficult and limited market on a car that's highly in demand. Most dealers wanted to get me into the dealership and nearly all of them had their set add-ons and they wouldn't negotiate. But I stood firm on getting an Out the Door price via email. Color choices were limited because of supply but one dealer offered what they had at MSRP. I purchased a car that had just come off the transport truck, still had tape on the door handles, with NO dealer add-ons. I saved at least $2500! Thanks again for the advice.

Broaden your search to 1,000 miles. It’ll be about $800-1000 to ship at the most and you can pay a local inspector to check out the car for you. I’ve done this for my last 5 cars and it’s always worked out well. The odds of the best deal being within a driving distance is very low. This strategy gets a bit tougher if the car is out of the warranty period. It works really well on cars that are 2-3 years old and 30k miles or less.

This strategy is probably fine for new cars that is available everywhere. Do you have a suggestion when I already narrowed down the pool, say X model year, Y trim, Z options with specific color? It would b be the case that in 300mi radius there are probably 2-3 fits the bill, once in a while. I know the short suggestion is to loose up the requirement a bit and widen it up, but just wonder if there is any trick.

My last lease was like $140 a month cheaper because the dealer drove it for 3k miles. Wtf did I care, the clock on mileage didn’t matter to me, I still got the 36k miles so it had to be under or at 39k when I returned it. I always try to find some sort of edge on every lease, why not, if you hit up enough dealerships there always seems to be some situation that can be to your advantage. Only thing is, you have to be willing to walk away or be patient, let them chase you down if they want your $. You’ll even get calls near the end of the month if you can just wait it out. I’m in the process right now for a 2nd car, been shopping around a month and the deals are getting slightly better every couple days.

If you get the deal done and in writing and then go to the dealer and they try to pull something on you (vehicle is already sold, or they have dealer add-ons that they try to add to the price), in addition to filing a complaint with the state attorney general’s office, the BBB and giving them a bad review online, also let them know they will NEVER get your business in the future either. Good dealers don’t play these games, and they know treating a customer right will likely earn them future car sales and service from their current customers.
@brookcampbell2940

You must go in knowing your OTD threshold. Pick your dealers, but you need to go in and go through the motions. It does take time, but you are playing a game. Once you have their best price let the salesperson know you will be in touch and you now are going to their competitor to do the exact same thing until you find the deal you want. A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. If they don’t stop you the deal was never meant to be had.

I'm going to need to buy a new car soon, and it'll be my first at 55 YO because I've always lived in big cities. I'm a total rookie and trying to do my homework. I already planned to pit one dealer against another but I'm confused about something. I know that cars are just commodities but it gets difficult to compare the same model car because they so frequently have significantly different options on them. From the one time that I was briefly in the market for a car because I thought I was moving out of state, I tried to pit a Toyota dealership in Boston with one in Vermont and both tried to convince me that the comparisons weren't apt because of the options differences. How do I handle that? Thanks. Btw, I'm a cash buyer and want to buy a Rav4 Prime, or something like it. I've watched your videos on not sabotaging yourself by saying that I'm a cash buyer, but has any of that changed with the market being more of a buyer's market these days? Thanks for the vids! I shop nation wide so I don’t care about where the dealership is as long as the price difference justifies the road trip back home compared to local dealers. Model vehicle I’m looking for is a 2025 Lexus NX 450h+ F sport. Nothing exceptionally special but certain hybrid Toyotas and Lexus are difficult to find on the lot. It will be about the end of the year when I would like to take delivery, I have no idea how long the process is for the vehicle to get delivered to the dealership once ordered. See, here's something just never hear you talking about. And that is how to negotiate leasing a car by using the car you're turning in. Your advice is never related to leases. And too, I recently tried to get a deal online explaining to them, that I contacted the bank I'm leasing on, getting their buyout price, and for them to literally pretend my car is there in front of them. All they had to do is pay attention to the fact that my 2022 car who's lease is ending has 18,300 mikes, not one scratch on it. And to then tell me where we're at pricewise. Of course I don't expect a quote to be to the penny. But hey I told them all they need to know. And differences would be addressed in person. But I know for a fact my car is like new. What are your thoughts as I'm just about ready

If you’ve already been preapproved for a loan you could try telling them that. If you haven’t actually been preapproved, it may not be the best idea since it could come back to bite you in the butt. You could also tell them that the OTD price has nothing to do with your credit score. Your credit score only determines if, a) you’ll qualify for a loan and, b) how much the loan rate will be. If they aren’t willing to give you an outdoor price without a credit score they’re probably not the dealer you wanna buy from.

It says New/Used in the video title. Did you miss that? It's essentially the same, but remember to add in a PPI (Pre purchase inspection).

No way I'd let dealerships wrench on my car, good mechanics mostly under shady overlords inflating everything but your tires - which of course they probably charge for

What's wrong with buying a demo car?

A demo car could be perfectly fine. What's not cool is when a dealer attempts to sell you the demo as if it were new.

These people want to charge you $99 just to call them for an initial telephone conversation and then another $900 to find a vehicle. Don't do it. I'm looking for a new vehicle and thought I'd negotiate my own price and then see if these guys could do better. I would have been happy to pay for the service if they found a good price but asking you for upfront fees is hilarious. Run

I live in boder texas near mexico and there are no dealerships that dont have the specific car that i want exept driving 5-6 hours to houston/san antonio., they have carmax here in my location and they have a vehicle that i want online but i need to ship it. My question is that is it worth it to go to carmax to get the car than driving 5-6 hours to the dealership just to negotiate/see the car??

Yes, it's worth expanding your search radius to get a great deal. Carmax overprices their cars.
