In the historical fashion community, we sometimes see these beautifully made gowns with intricate smocking and various designs. The decorative effects used, like honeycomb smocking, feel completely out of reach and insanely difficult to complete, especially for historical sewing beginners, but I'm here to surprise you with the truth: honeycomb smocking is EASY.
It's time-consuming, yes, but it isn't that difficult. In this video, I show you in extremely simple steps how to do honeycomb smocking on your next dress, blouse, sleeve, or whatever you might want to make a little more ornate.
Smocking, an embroidery technique that reduces fabric typically by one-third, was a wonderful alternative to buttons for the every day, working person. Whilst this technique was common on workwear, it was also used to embellish more expensive historical clothing. Although smocking machines do exist in the world, this honeycomb smocking tutorial is done completely with hand sewing so it is accessible with no machine necessary.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and please let me know in the comments below if you have any questions or need further assistance.
In other exciting news, I am now offering 1-1 tutoring and consulting sessions on my website for either individuals just getting started with hand sewing, or for those who would like support in building their historybounding or historical fashion wardrobe.
