@seventoast

@@maximuschapman7760Yeah, they just get up one day and say "Aite, time to stop pretending I couldn't walk this whole time" Even if you argue that they teach themselves, babies still have to _learn_ how to walk; it takes years of practice just for them to not fall over randomly. There may be a few exceptional athletes who would default to jumping in this way without any practice or study, but in a vast majority of cases this is a *learned* technique, not natural form. People who jump like this either learned, through repeated trials, what works best, or they adopted the form from someone else; it may be _easy_ for some of them, but that doesn't make it natural

Good advice. I’m a sprint coach and now switching my own focus to 800m. One of the things that I teach is that a bent leg can travel in the air faster than a straight one. And that’s why the best runners chamber that heel to the butt, so that the leg can cycle through faster for the next stride. This is the same principle, but with jumping. I’m gonna practice this for fun.

As a highjumper, I have no idea what's going on here. Jumping with two feet is just soo different. In highjump at least, that penultimate step would 1) Be way to long. First, you're losing momentum while in the air - though admittedly not much. 2) you're putting downward force on your joints and thus increasing the load your have to fight against to get up. Though - that's not a big deal. 2) That landing, at least in the highjump, is 100% going to result in blowing through the jump. As you try to convert the forward momentum into upwards momentum, the whole body has to be in line. Meaning a highjumper will be leaning away from the bar on takeoff and you can draw a straight line from heel to head. Here - we have an angle at the hips. Meaning he'll be using muscle to stop his body from moving forward and also be losing force behind him. But - everything I'm saying applies to highjump where we're 1) Trying to jump over a bar and thus trying to get our center of gravity as high as possible, 2) We're only allowed to take off 1 foot - I'm not sure that two foot take offs would be better but tumbling makes me wonder. My whole point is that I just don't understand this advice as a highjumper - particularly as it relates to the angle at the hips.

The whole point of this video is explaining how to be explosive off 2 feet. I believe a better description of how to jump higher is to run and about half speed and when you go to jump make sure your last 2 steps are planned and when you exploding off your feet its best to not squat 2 far down but to be about half bent at the knees so no momentum is lost. The hardest thing is learning timing, it takes good timing to get a real spring off your feet.
@bryant475

This has NO Relationship to "High Jump". This is about how high can you jump with NO RESTRICTIONS. In "High Jump" you MUST take off on ONE Foot and CLEAR a bar. At one time someone was able to back flip over an 8' high bar. It doesn't count because he took off on TWO Feet.

This translates well to a lot of sports, commonly called blocking out. You're trying to get good forward momentum, and smoothly redirect as much forward momentum into upward momentum as possible while losing as little as possible. Throwing your hips forward (and shoulders back) puts your center of gravity behind the angle of momentum, which is a super important preperation. Leading with your knee and waiting until the last second to extend helps you bring your back leg at least part of the way forward before landing, letting you absorb and redirect that energy with both legs. You can achieve a similar effect by jumping onto both feet with your center of gravity behind your feet (look at how gymnasts/tricksters perform front tucks), but this method allows a much greater transfer of energy. Gymnasts/tricksters get away with it because the springfloor helps redirect the energy.

Sure it looks scary for your knees in slow motion but a simple slap also looks scary in slow motion. This is objectively proper jump technique that will not get you hurt. Also he's the highest jumper in the world, of course he's gonna have really intense angles and force in his jump! He's jumped 51 inches and people think they need to correct him 😂 Edit I've actually watched it now nice advice 👍 I've never thought about leading with the knee and THEN straightening my leg. I'll think about it later at VB practice

His jumping technique can be easily analyse phase by phase & or broken down biomechanically. There is certainly some very positive aspects to his overall leaping ability with that said there are aspects of his jumping which could be more efficient which more than likely if mastered suggest his max leaping heights could increase. In term of injury let's just say this is not a suitable or ideal forum to openly dialogue on that point. Working with such as Javier Sotomajor, Derek Drouin, Milt Ottey & other athletes over past 30+ years given us a unique perspective on the jumps, & speed power.
