Thanks Tim - I really enjoyed this. The approach to repeating the rhythms to internalise them, then creating the tension and release by using the dominant, and ending on the tonic was really clear. Repeating the same phrase in the B section to create tension before the final release in the last A section was great. Would you consider creating a video on the same lines, but maybe the next stage would be how to apply this to improvising over a standard? Also how to use what you have learned, without simply repeating that rhythmic pattern in every solo. 🙂

So good. This brilliantly lucid and practical lesson hits the mark. I have been guilty of giving a short shrift to rhythm, and this is a wake-up call. Thanks so much for this excellent lesson.

Super cool jazz tip: don't learn Mainieri grip. It is hard and painful

Dudes if you want to learn jazz rhythm there is only one Source Diz and Bird They were the fountain of this music And still are No metronomes were used Take it from one with experience make an exhaustive study of Mike Longo Rhythmic nature of jazz His 4 CD ( or downloadable now since tech has moved forward ) set It’s a perverse quality of humans. To miss the obvious Eg Bach Had to be rediscovered Study From this course No one else knows rhythm like Mike. dizzy’s close friend and sideman Forget metronome nonsense - which originated with Lenny Tristano. Unless you like Lenny ! Most will ignore this but be wise As Mike taught - there is WHAT you play. And more significantly HOW you play it Pablo Casals indirectly supports this when he says “The heart of the melody can never be put down on paper.” Pablo was a giant of his era HOW you play cannot be notated

More videos like this please :) You taught rhythm, intention, and phrasing all in one lesson. But I want MORE :) Glad to see you are well, Mr. Collins.
