We must have shopped in the same aisles have many of those also. Baseball Quotations was a favorite. I got those all star all pro books everyear from the order catalog at school. My baseball encyclopedia is worn out! My childhood books still hold a big place in my collection. It’s how we learned about Sam Crawford, Chief Bender, Cobb, DiMaggio and all the players that came before our time. We memorized stats, trivia and dreamed of going back in time to see them play. Thanks for making me feel 10 again for a few minutes.

Hi John. I have a few baseball books in my collection too. I enjoy reading the trivia books and the baseball encyclopedia. I have a collection of Smith and Streets baseball yearbooks from 1969 until they stopped publishing it. Thanks for the look back.

I used to do the same. Every year at the school “book fair”, which was the big thing in the 70’s, I would buy the baseball and football books. There was one book in our school library that I would check out pretty regularly. I think it was called “I was a Big League Bat Boy”. It was a book that someone who got to be the bat boy for the Cardinals during the mid-60’s wrote telling of his experiences in the dugout and clubhouse. It was chock full of pictures and was angled towards kids. It was my dream to be able to do that. Haha. I’m sure I had some of the same books you did. Thanks for shaking up my childhood memories.

You are definitely my brother from another mother John! I had 5 or 6 of those books in my house as well. I still have the Kenny Stabler and a couple of the Bradshaw ones. I still have the Pro Football Stars of 1977 with Walter Payton on the cover, too. I had the Bert Jones but it sadly “disappeared” There are two that I still have that I’m sure you remember, Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier story and Sports Stars: Franco Harris both I got in ‘75. The good folks at “Reading is Fundamental” would come in the fall in the big red Rifmobile & you filled out your slip of all the books you wanted. Then, sometime in the spring, when you forgot about your book order, the Rifmobile would arrive. The classes’ books would all be stacked on the teachers desk with your order slips sticking out! The teacher would pass them all out & it was sports reading time! Great video and a fun walk down memory lane.

I thought I knew something about sports, but you opened the door to history I never heard of after watching this video. Example: How many out there know that they at one time played football in Baseball stadiums. Or which of these were the last to allow black players to join them (MLB, NBA, NFL) Please maybe include a little on this history in future videos because after 62 years I am learning a new world I never knew.

@@MrJmangini Definitely one of the first. Not much content but from the time when cards were dirt cheap. They advertised in baseball digest and that’s where I first learned about old cards. I specifically recall ordering a 55 Topps Koufax around 1974 and it couldn’t have been more than 3.00. It just came loose in an envelope. There were no sleeves or anything then.

In school we'd get a little library time a couple times per week & I'd always check out the sports books. I'm probably the last generation of kids in which the internet was something few had access to. Although the information at Young people's fingertips is great however they'll probably never experience finding a book with some sports stories they've never heard before. Limited information oddly can expand the facts one us exposed too. Listen the younger folks are certainly better of with the information they have at there fingertips however it is at a cost.

Thanks for sharing John. Quite a collection. When I was a kid, I too ingested the same kind of books. It was an obsession growing up. Knowledge is power. I was smarter than 90%%of my friends and had a bunch of the same kind of books that you read. I just never got to save or collect them like you were able to. Parents divorced when I was 12 and my mother was always moving, so when we moved, we had to fine tune our stuff and cut moving costs. We were military for alot of my life so I didn't get to keep most of my collection or stuff. Mom always was throwing things out. Just have the memories. Thanks for rekindling those memories. I'm 62yo and things were definitely different then. Today's kids don't research or ingest history like we did back then.

I remember those books from grade school. There were 2 different companies that we got order forms for. Usually we would get one companies form one month and the other the next month. I have the majority of those books. You and I are probably about the same age. I'm likely a couple years older. Two stories that I believe you will like John. My grade school principal used to live beside Don Robinson long before he became a principal. I'm guessing my principal was 12-15 years older than Don. But he used to mow Don's parents grass in Cerdo-keonva W.V. I noticed the Man of Steel book of Terry Bradshaw. Saw Dave Diles name. I live near the town Dave Diles was from in Ohio called Middleport. Town sits on the Ohio River and they have a small park there named after Dave. I remember Dave from ABC College scoreboard show growing up. I'm a Reds and Bengals fan. Growing up during the Big Red machine living in Ohio and W.V. All my friends are Steeler fans. I thought if you rooted for a baseball team in a city you had to root for the same cities football team. I missed the boat and a lot of super bowls. But I'm too far down the rabbit hole to change now. Happy Father's day John
