You all do a perfect job of speeding up footage when appropriate. There is so much repetition in gardening, it would be a total waste of viewer time to watch you do the same thing, the same way more than two or three times. Or to watch you travel from Point A to Point B. I am so used the the way you produce your outstanding videos that I have stopped watching some others gardening videos that don’t speed up or edit out the repetition. It is so annoying. Years ago, when I first started watching, I thought Laura talked too fast. I don’t know if her speech slowed down or my Southern ear adjusted 😂. A few times I have slowed down the playback speed only to watch a technique I want to learn because you are so efficient. The music, your narrative content and delivery, the action and quality of filming and editing is superb. You are the Gold Standard of Garden Videos 🏆🥇🌟👏

Just to interject on the "room" where your table with bouquet and hutch, old homes (homes back in the day) had what is called a reception hall. That room was the center location leading to the other rooms on the first floor, the stair case, and the front door. Some of the old homes had a fireplace and built-in sitting area as well.

Lots of old houses has a landing that used to be the place you greeted guest when they arrived/landed. I have always wanted a landing but never had it. As your house is built on I guess the landing got further back instead of beeing the greeting area. The same with the area outside with small pieces of grass it looks like a formal greeting area where the horse and carrige could go round to leave off people or people could get on their carrige. We had that kind of ”round about” in our old property. It is fun to imagin horses & carriges with ladies in long dresses and hats coming for afternoon tea or dinner parties! Oh how fun if the walls could talk & tell us stories in the past!

Agreed. The big dinner plate hibiscus are fabulous at a distance. Mine can be seen from inside the house. Even the fading flowers look fine. But never in a “walk-by” area. Too many blooms coming and going. They do not drop spent blooms cleanly: they drape on the plant and dry out slowly. Easy enough to remove spent blooms by hand, but you would need to do this daily. Always stunning at a distance.

When the areas of big trees are more grown up you can put magnolis as an understory. They like that much better and if the big trees d their job they will provide shelter from late frost. That’s how I do it here in Sweden as we also get late frosts. Also different typs of magnolia flowers at different times. Choose late spring flowering and summer flowering kinds. They are gorgeous too! And just as the big hibiskus flowers best at a distance!

A question was asked about whether or not to add compost to raised beds now vs in the Spring. I add my compost now, and I'm in 6B, New England. I top the compost with cardboard and cover the entire raised bed. (Be sure the cardboard is a natural color, with labels removed.) I then weigh it down with some random pavers or logs that I have lying around. Or, you could use landscape staples, but I prefer something heavier as it has to last the entire winter. When I uncovered my beds in the Spring, wow, the soil was fantastic! I could see the earth worms. I can also attest to the fact that plants in these beds do better than ones that were not covered. My dahlias as doing so great, and I will repeat this process each year from now on. I would be sure to use cardboard, not landscape fabric. The cardboard allowed the soil to breath and was a great amendment to the soil, as some of the cardboard broke down.

Laura, when you do start shopping "locally" for horses, read up on breeds and mixed breeds too. With the children you will want gentle, even tempered horses. And thing about what type of saddle trained horse. Western or English. Will anyone want to do competition and what style. There are so many ways to look at things to think about. My sister and I had horses and my sister still does. Horses bond with you in a way special way. I rode for the fun of it and getting into nature. My sister competed in English Hunter Jumper. And she was a champion. And her horses were too. Depends on the individual, but my horse was both pleasure and show horse. Bethany will lead you in the right direction.

The agriculture teacher, (at my middle school) who also maintained the grounds had a rule to cut back all the shrubs every 4 years, to keep aphids killed off. His belief was if the plant was kept smaller the temperature stays lower and it won’t support the aphid colonies. When my daughter started the same school, the shrubs were all over grown into one mass and the aphids were so bad all the shrubs had to be removed.

My daughter has a cat that is very territorial. It got into a fight more than once with an opossum resulting in several bites that turned into nasty abscesses. After two expensive trips to the veterinary clinic for wound care and antibiotics my husband purchased a have a heart trap. We caught 5 of the animals in about 3 weeks and relocated them in a natural area away from housing development and close to a freshwater source. No more vet bills. Word of caution, opossums can carry rabies and can become very damaging to structures as well as raccoons. We advise perhaps getting local wildlife officials help relocate these animals whenever possible.

Way back when I was a wholesale grower we grew 30,000 I gal. And about 1,000 2 gal. (Still 1 plant just started them sooner for size). I also sold some retail and got questioned daily about hardiness. In my experience when 1st starting out there were a lot less varieties available and would generally come back meaning "Hardy". As the years went on (like a 30 year span) and more and more varieties were introduced I felt like they had less "Hardiness", and would still come back with a bit more effort to winter over. I guess (my opinion only) it's worth the extra effort because you can't deny that the colors we now have to choose from is incredible! Also, the price of a big beautiful mum is comparible to a 4.5" annual (P.W.) think of them as an annual and you won't be disappointed 😊 😊😊

The point of rip rap is that the stones have jagged edges, and lock together to form a blockage for erosion. It can be found in very small stone (often used as paver base) or large boulders used in shorelines and bridge embankments.
