As a Chinese person, I must say that the Chinese word for "fifty-seven," is not exactly as you might think. It's actually "5x10+7," which is similar to the way "fifty-seven" is said in English. "五十"(50)中的"十”(10),is like the "ty" in "fifty" in English. In fact, many Chinese people are accustomed to pronouncing each digit separately, especially for larger numbers. For example, the number 200700 can be pronounced as "两万零七百" (literally meaning two tens of thousands and seven hundred). However, it can also be pronounced as 2-0--0-7-0-0, with each digit spoken individually, similar to reading a phone number. This is because Chinese is a monosyllabic language, so it's quite convenient to do it this way.

@@mufafathegreat My point is, theoretically, what he said is correct. Indeed, "五十六" can be understood as 5X10 + 6. However, in practice, we don't think of it that way. In fact, whether it's "五十," "八十," or "八百,八千,八万"... we process them all as a whole in our minds. It's a cultural difference, I guess. I never thought that "五十六" is 5X10 + 6 , 哈哈

You actually don't need to imagine it since english also follow the scheme for numbers bigger than 100. For example, 3456 is "three thousand four hundred and fifty six" (3*1000+4*100+50+6) in english. In my language it's "three thousand four hundred five ten six" (3*1000+4*100+5*10+6)

I'm a proponent of axing DST for a majority of the country especially here in the South, we don't need it at all we're close enough to the equator that a extra hour of daylight doesn't effect us in the slightest and personally I'd much rather not have my internal clock/sleep schedule screwed with over having a extra hour anyways, let the northern states keep it if they want but let us here in the South change it... at least Arizona has got the right idea its a shame that they are the only one tho. Also that map of nations whom have attacked Poland is inaccurate and should include: 1) Denmark/Norway: Battle of Hel (July 29, 1571). 2) Romania (Wallachia): Battle of Bukowo (October 20, 1600). 3) Latvia/Estonia (Kingdom of Livonia): Livonian War (1558-1583). 4) UK, Spain, Portugal: War of the Fifth Coalition (1809), War of the Sixth Coalition (1812-1814). 5) Bulgaria, Finland, Croatia: WWII before they flipped sides in 1944.

No, daylight savings time has never made sense; no matter what laws any country passes, you cannot change the number of hours of daylight during a given 24 hour period. Those limited 'professions' where it might have been marginally helpful, could have just changed their working hours by an hour. When my family emigrated from England to California in 1953, it took us 5 days on by ship (RMS Queen Elizabeth) followed by 3 days by train. When 3 of us returned to England in 1973, we managed to leave Los Angeles and arrive in London on the same day - flight left LAX at ¼ past midnight and arrived at Heathrow at ¼ to midnight!
@kuroganeyuuji6464
10 ай бұрын
as far as i understand daylight savings is to shift the period of the day that has sunlight so that you don't lose part of it to sleep hours, thus saving on energy there, mostly for people at their houses later on the day after they comeback from work. Did it help? yeah, but too little for the effort, and with no proper communication on why it is done, people don't want it anymore.
