when the frame rate is stylistic decision it looks good, as the artist works to make it look smoother, but their work looks like an animatic, characters snap forward with no anticipation

You can't compare this shit to actual decent shows. Most shows choppy animation isn't distracting and on top of that, if the writings bad and the characters aren't likable or so strong of a disliked stereotype people stop looking at the show for what it is and are more likely to start nitpicking the building blocks of the show as in the writing, the character designs, the characters personality. Rick and Morty were heavily criticized for their art style until people got the chance to watch the show, and then people stopped caring and enjoyed it for what it was. When you can't enjoy it, you're probably gonna shit on it.

Instead of adding to the discourse like a broken record, he's using his information to give us something to think about. And he isnt saying its a good show. He's posing questions Though he did also cover this topic in a previous short that I think would put you at ease where he does mention that it is valid in its other critiques

No no no wait , the reason spider verse was praised for it is because it was visual story telling , when miles was ready to be spider man his frame rate improved it made sense , which is why i fucking hate that whenever a video game tries to pay reference to miles they give him a low frame rate implying that he ISNT ready to be spider man , fortnite gave gwen a low frame rate emote for no reason not understanding the meaning . And puss in boots animation was beautiful on top of having a low frame rate these do not compare

Choppy animation is good for adding weight to actions. Making them snappy and having a seemingly greater impact. The examples described arent choppy throughout the whole production, but in places where it emphasizes an action and there is actually a stylistic reason for it.

While it's true choppy animation can look good, just making your animation lower framrate doesn't make it stylized. Choppy framerate with purpose looks good. If the show used squash and stretch more on the choppy parts to better convey speed, it would look alot better. Hell even smears would help. Not just lowering the framerate. Makes it for your eyes to follow.
@noel_curray

Pocoyo even though its choppy has smear to see the flow of action. In good times (like what i see in the clips) are like the pose are too far from each other and didn't add smear. Looks unfinished.

To compare this to spiderverse is crazy. The choppiness in spiderverse was intentional and selective to individuals and themes. By the looks of the show, it was probably used as a cost cutter. Even then the choppiness doesn't even help out the stylization. South Park (which to be honest the newer seasons aren't that bad in terms of choppiness) utilizes it to fit within the paper cut feel the show has. This show doesn't have that benefit

The Charlie Brown Specials had a budget, but they tried their best with what they had and it looked good, it was charming and fit with the entire special because of that. Spider-Verse and Puss In Boots 2 use choppy animation as visual story telling and exaggeration. Good Times doesn’t try, Good Times doesn’t use it as visual representation, or exaggeration, thats why it sucks, its random and with no use.

It's because when the animation is choppy in those, it enhances the show no other way could. In Good Times it just distracts. As for South Park specifically, it's supposed to be a paper-made stop motion animation in the same vein as claymation such as pocoyo. Also, as the Puss in Boots person said, it gives a fantastical feeling. That is not Good Times.
@hastypastry6353

I really dislike the phrase “choppy”. It’s deceptive, unclear, and generally carries a negative connotation. People are calling 12fps/animating on 2’s “choppy” in spiderverse because when you see something animated on 2’s in that movie everything around it is animated on 1’s /24 fps, so it feels “choppy”. But if a whole cartoon or movie is animated on 2s (which wouldn’t really ever be the case but hear me out), as long as it’s animated well it wouldn’t feel “choppy” or weird in any way. Switching between 1’s and 2’s based on the needs of a given scene is a totally normal technique that animators have been using for over a century. Based on the clips in this video, it seems like people are criticizing good time because it doesn’t use the medium to its advantage. It just looks like a series of keyframes and not great ones at that.

Choppy animation can look very good and add to the comedy by showing less movement to indicate an emotion, or add to an action scene by allowing the viewers mind to add in the missing frames and see the characters as more solid and real. I haven’t seen this show but if people are complaining about the frame rate it may be because the show isn’t utilizing it correctly. The characters may look to still in some scenes which takes away from the action and or humor. Just because a piece of media is using a very effective art style doesn’t always mean it will be done effectively.

Not all choppy's are the same, some look better and work with the style, others look worse. Plus it's hard to appreciate a stylized choice in the animation when everything else about it is offensive to your senses.

The choppy animations really compliment the Good Times' highly stylized settings and character designs; nothing wrong with choppy animation itself, so long as you do it right. Choppy animation is more effective in high, intense action sequences bcuz theyre usually quick to visually digest and viewers likely dont have time to see any intricacies within the animation, so makin em choppy works cuz it keeps up with the quick pacing of action. Slower moments, however, you will wanna animate more frames, cuz theyre slower; these sequences focus on the more emotional or simpler moments, to see the character as themselves. (Like in the show trailer where the dad is spinning his pool stick and the dude next to him angrily shoves down his cash onto his hand? Thats a slow moment, we wanna see more frames on that angry dude, but we dont, the choppiness undermines just how angry that dude is to the dad) Spiderverse and Puss in Boots do this so well, especially Puss in Boots cuz it's choppy in action, but the animation is very smooth and fluid in non-action sequences. TL;DR: use choppier frames in high action, use slower and intricate frames for slower moments
