The Xterra goes plenty deep without the sensitivity cranked up. I find that I don’t need more than 6-12 on the sensitivity in park mode. Also doing a ground balance doesn’t hurt either. Just remember that your 900 has a notch for every number whereas the Xterra, I believe, has three numbers per notch which makes the VDI’s roam. I have a 900 and Xterra as backup, but I have found that I really like the Xterra and tend to just switch between them. Thanks for the video.

Useful video but it's important to note the Vanquish's depth (and recovery speed) is determined by its detection mode. Coin mode has the least depth, and combined with lowering its sensitivity, meant the Vanquish was fighting with one hand tied behind its back. If you'd had the Vanquish in Jewelry or Relic mode, with the sensitivity maxxed out, it would find deep targets no problem. I say this as someone who owns a 540 and have put at least 30 hours into it.
@SeekandDetect

@@SeekandDetectIn my experience the only real plus the Equinox has over the Vanquish is superior target separation. The Vanquish can get close if you swing slow, but you have to be very deliberate. Another big plus with Vanquish is they use standard AA batteries, rather than proprietary lithium ion internal batteries that lose storage capacity over time and require sending to the manufacturer to replace. And I don't have much experience with Simplex+ series, but all I ever see is "they are cheap and waterproof!" okay... but what about their frequency detection technology, target separation capability, depth versus mineralized soil, that sort of thing? I can say the Vanquish is excellent against mineralized soil in my experience, and the Multi-IQ tech is not smoke and mirrors for my money.

Your Test Between Single Frequency and Multi Frequency detectors is Flawed and Inconclusive. Because you did not do a ground balance on the single frequency detector. The multi frequency has the ability to mitigate ground effect. The Xterra Pro has a default ground balance of "0" which is fine for the beach. not for mineralized ground . You are trying to compare APPLES to ORANGES !

But, I think my biggest problem, which has been pointed out many times, was running the sensitivity way too high. The 2 other machines do fine slightly below full power. I now know after quite few hours of swinging, the Xterra does best with the sensitivity closer to a half. 12-18 has been working best for me. I'd like to do a new updated video soon. I'm new to detecting and purchased an Exterra Pro two weeks ago. I could not ne happier. I've dug up about 50 coins in my yard-- quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies. Also dug up about 50 ammo related targets(casings and projectiles in all calibers). Previous owner shot alot I guess. I also used it to clear my front yard of near surface nails and trash metal and it did a fantastic job. Pulled some 60 to 70 targets. Some were just tiny metal fragments and even dug up a few super tiny staples. As to target ID, it, it's pretty good. As mentioned on here, the key is sensitivity. I typically will search at max to hear as much as I can and then drop it down to get good ID. With noise canceling, grounding, discriminaying, and sensitivity adjustments, I can get very good target ID. When it's jumpy, it's usually because the target is super tiny or there are other targets withing the sweep range. Again, dropping sensitivity will "improve" ID. The more I learn to speak the language of the detector, the better it gets. I am completely thrilled with this detector and its ability to detect all things big and small. As I learned more, I believe it will only get better. I never imagined a $269 detector could be this good. I absolutely love it!

@@SeekandDetect As someone who is completely new to detecting, I thought these machines had a magical way of determining if a metal was a certain type, but that's not true at all. With some grounding in physics (Electricity and magnetism), we know different metals will yield a magnetic field upon being hit by the magnetic fields of the transmitting coil. The phase shift will also be different and with these known values, the detector can differentiate and give us targe ID's. The issue is that depth and size of the object can mask things, making the ID of things appear to be like others. I have learned through testing and observation that coins, buried deep will not ID with the same ID as if they are only a couple inches off the ground. For instance, if I see a 91 and it's showing 6 or more shovels, I know it's not a coin because a coin would not return such a high ID as that at that depth. If it were a silver dollar, it might, but for a quarter, it will not. At 2 to 3 shovels, I can expect an 89-91 for a quarter. Then there's orientation. Because the B-field(magnetic field) of the coil is up and down(looping), the orientation of a coin matters. If its vertical, the signal is going to be weak to non-existent if the b-field loops are parallel to the coins face because only the edge of the coin is exposed to the B-field vs when it's lying flat which exposes the face of the coin to the B-field, the optimal position for detecting. If you get a strong coin ID in one orientation and when you are 90 degrees from that orientation, you've lost the signal, it's very likely a vertical coin. Orientation can lead to signal degradation or lost all together. This is why I will sometimes detect with the detector at an angle rather than horizontal to the ground. This is where you want to have it on max sensitivity. You have distance away from the target and you have the B-field hitting at an angle so the B-field that's normal to the surface is going to be the B-field times sin of theta(angle of coil face with respect to ground). The greater the angle, the stronger the B-field going into the coil, but at some point, you're going to miss the target all together so it's a balancing act. It's the little things like this that can help make detecting easier and it takes just having a little background in E&M. Seeing videos of people identifying things and what not by the targe ID is only partially true. When you are actually detecting, your situation dictates what the ID should be more than anything. This is why it's so important to know what your detector is telling you. Your situation is unique to everyone else's and this is why you need speak your machine's language because John Doe's soil conditions and the metals present in his soil is going to be different from yours. For me, it's a science which makes it so much more interesting than purely just metal detecting. I'm beginning to wonder if Minelab's may have inadvertently shot themselves in the foot by putting so much into the X-Tera Pro. For my needs, I see zero need for an Equinox. Can you share what the Equinox can do hat the X-Terra cannot. I do not own one so I wouldn't have a clue. From the reviews, they both detect about the same. The only advantage I see it having is a bit more depth capability per some reviews. The question of simultaneous multi-frequency comes to mind. Is this technology really worth $1k more? I mean, do you see a 6 times improvement with the Equinox compared to the X-terra Pro? Personally, I don't think so. It may have a few strengths over the X-terra Pro, but I think they're relatively minor which wouldn't justify the extra $$. I don't know, just my 2 cents. Again, this is coming from a total noob in the detecting realm so maybe down the line I'll see that the tiny extra benefits are worth it. Presently, I just don't. I believe I can do and achieve more by understanding how the machine works and using that to my advantage. I'm a bit surprised these companies are not incorporating tech to determine orientation of the coils. If the resultant B-field from the target changes with respect to the coil angle, you can be sure it's a planar item(coin, disk, thin sheet, etc). If it doesn't or is minimal, it's likely a more uniform object who's B-field isn't likely to change much based on orientation. To me, this would really help to discriminate coins. IE, something like a shell casing can ID similar to a penny due the the brass being 2/3 made of copper. However, a coin would yield different B-fields compared to a casing if you rotate the B-filed. I would like to see a tiltable coil. This would allow you to easily sweep left and right with the B-field oriented at an angle helping to discriminate the profile of the object and ultimately, identification. Minelabs, are you listening? LOL

@@vangmountain You've posted a lot of information there and you are completely correct. While I do mainly hunt with the 900, I've been trying to incorporate the X-terra into my videos because I know it is so popular. Multi-frequency does make a difference, how important that is depends on the user and what targets they happen to be walking over. I have been out with other guys while using my X-Terra and once in awhile we compare signals before digging. There have been a few times the X-Terra gave little to no signal and a multi-IQ machine gave a clear tone. Mind you this was at the beach, and I was running in beach mode. Not only is the Xterra a single freq. at a time machine, but in beach mode you're only option is 8kHz. This doesn't mean I won't find great things, watch one of my last videos, I nail a big gold ring. A few things to consider besides multi-IQ, the 900 does come with very solid carbon fiber shaft, wireless headphones and an additional 6" coil. If you factor the cost these in, the price gap narrows down a bit. It really comes down to marketing and what minelab decides to provide at each price level. As much as I don't like overspend on "fluff", their machines all seem to sell well so they are doing something right.

@@SeekandDetect I see what you're talking about now. Just ordered a set of ML85 wireless headset because for sure it's going to be better for hearing faint sounds versus listening to the detector, especially if you're in a noisy setting like a beach. When you buy this detector, that's all you get which is plenty fine. I see a lot of hacks around the headphone but man, it's not worth it. I'd rather have the seemless bluetooth and have a clean setup. At 35 to 40 hrs runtime, i will never need a wired connection. Good to know some folks in the detecting community. Thanks for all the feedback.

You can put all of those coils on the XTerra Pro, but the XTerra coil won't register on the other machines. XTerra Pro is going to prove to be the superior machine if Minelab ever does a software update on it.

It depends on what you’re looking for. These 3 are good all around machines for finding many different types of metal. If you’re looking for gold you’d probably want to try something different. They make detectors that will find the tiniest little nuggets.

Nice video. Yesterday I was detesting with my metal detector at my beach. My dad had it for 30 years and when I put it on the towel at the beach later on when I picked it up and continue my search it just didn't work we tried everything but it still doesn't work. So now im looking for a metal detector for 25 dollars because that's my budget. Thanks for making the video, I learned something new😊

With modern Canadian coins you want to run at 40hz. In multi mode the coins will ring up as trash. This is where the nox 900 shines. I’ve always found the American coins will read just fine in all the different hz modes and In multi. But when it came time for modern Canadian coins they wouldn’t even recognize them unless in 40hz. Silver rings high in 40hz.

What a coincidence you’d mention Canadian coins, in my next video at the beach I find one. Beach mode is locked in at 8khz.

@@SeekandDetect I don’t see stable numbers on any of the new series Minlelabs that use the bigger scale every single 700-900-Manticore all the guys using them posting videos the numbers are all over this can be satisfied mostly by running the gain at a reasonable level full or 3/4 full is too much if you want to look at numbers

I have owned a 540 and now unfortunately a 900....These machines go DEEP but their Tid is horrible. Minelab should be ashamed. My 20 year old Whites locks o to a target and rarely varies the Tid by 4 in either direction. I am convinced that these machines make so many great finds because they force you to dig everything. Oh and anywhere there is the smallest amount of RFI you cannot use multi freq you have to go into single freq. What a joke.. 20 points of variation going over the same target. Co.e on Minelab get your crap together.
