I’ve driven F150’s most of my life. I switched to an F250 about 5 years ago. Should have done it soooo much earlier. I’m usually towing in the 7-10,000# range. The 250 just feels so much more confident. Most times it feels like there’s nothing there. I also do most of my own maintenance/repair work, and once I started this on my 2006 King Ranch😍(6.0 engine of my dreams) I soon realized how much more substantial all the components are. With the 150 I was towing at my limit. It did the job, but I feel so much more comfortable knowing that this is just such a capable vehicle for this level of towing. Love my Ford

Excellent analysis. Agree with the empty-driving comfort level for my RAM 2500 4x4 Hemi. In 2022, five adult women AND their luggage took my truck to San Antonio Texas for one week with no problems for the truck. Entering and exiting the cab was a challenge since 3 of them are short. Only one of them was sufficiently athletic to get in and out of the pickup bed. The 4x4 makes it quite tall.

I do have a preference. Putting capacity aside, I will go with the super duty if I ever have to tow. Yes, the half tons are legally capable of towing quite a load. I do not like towing with the lighter trucks. The heavier trucks just remove the “white knuckle” aspect of towing. This is of course personal preference. Everyone should do their research, and go with whatever works for them, and is legal.

Reasonably well said! I have a '17 F150 with the 3.5 EB motor. I *can* tow just over 10k lbs but I wouldn't want to. That being said, I currently tow a 4k travel trailer and have had zero problems with it aside from needing a WDH as the tongue weight is too much otherwise, causing too much squat. I also hardly know anything's back there... I've had a 250 in the past and I agree, towing heavier is much more relaxing with the 250/350 vs 150 but the unladen ride quality is much harsher with a 250/350 than with the 150. I am in full agreement with doing one's own research, and focus mostly on anticipated payload 1st, tongue weight capacity 2nd, and then anticipated GCVWR to decide upon the right tool for the job!

you nailed it right on the head, its the "white knuckle" aspect that gets me. it just FEELS like a flippin heavy duty truck when towing. does the f150 drive better? sure, its lighter, but if you wanna tow and haul? get the f250. its an easy decision in my honest opinion

older thread I know, but I have owned both for towing an 8K travel trailer. My advice is this. How far are your trips? How many hours/miles a day are you driving it. If only 2-4 hours, a 1/2 ton will do just fine in "relatively" flat terrain. Anything over 4 hours and that weight can become very taxing on the driver because you really have to pay attention, and feel all the input from any wind gusts, to truck suck, to braking distance needed. with a 3/4 or 1 ton, you don't feel nearly as much of those things, and can relax more, and therefore go longer distances.
@Na0uta

For like 90% of people, its unlikely they couldnt get by with a 3.5L heavy payload package. The 250 and up are really for the serious heavy lifting for long distance very often. Or if you just need more weight in the bed. Like you move bricks for a living or large pallets all the time.

I’ve been towing with an F-150 both a 21014 and a 2022 with the 3.5 because of the higher towing and payload over the 5.0. I tow a dry weight 6300 lbs travel trailer that is capable of another 3300 lbs of cargo. While I’ve never weighed it I’m somewhere between 7500-8000lbs. Tongue weight 900 and I use a distribution hitch. Other than hating hitching up. The wind/tractor trailer gust would push me around. I have over 5000 miles on that trailer with F-150. I recently totaled my F-150 and upgraded to the F-250 with the 7.3 and 3.73E axle ratio. I don’t get pushed around any longer and I don’t have to use a weight distribution hitch either. I love the smart hitch feature that let me know my tongue weight is good. I do not have swaying while doing 70 down the road. I would recommend if you are going to have a travel trailer on the heavier side go 3/4 ton truck or larger.

You can only get the CC F150 with a short bed or super short bed. Being able to get a full bed on the CC is worth getting the 250. Truck length doesn't bother me much, but 10' and 12' lumber needs either an over cab rack or an 8' bed.

Just as an FYI ... I've had numerous P/U over the last 45 years. Mostly F150's & F250's. The f150's are great riding vehicles but have limitations when it comes to payload & towing. My last F150 was a 2015 3.5l Heavy Tow. Payload cap was 2050#. Most F150 have a payload cap of ~1400-1600#. Easy to max out quickly. Since I towed a 7400# trailer I was pretty close to max payload. In 95% of the cases you hit max payload before max tow cap. Moved up to a F350 7.3L with a payload cap of 4505#. Day & night towing experience. When I ordered my F350 it was only $1700 more to go to the F350 vs F250. At the cost of these critters thats not very much more & you gain a lot more payload. Nut for nut; bolt for bolt they are the same except one overload spring on the F350.

Had 2012 tundra 8 foot bed towing 10k with 1800 payload... it was maxed out and felt like it. Now got a 24 hd 2500 chevy 6 3/4 foot bed crew cab 3.2k payload. The tundra would squat and then level the trailer under load. The HD chevy doesn't squat enough and I had to get a 8 inch drop hitch...even then, I can't level the trailer empty or small load. If I drop it 6-7 inch and load 10k, it squats to level out the trailer. I think the ride is better than the tundra, where you feel the road a lot, but the handling is worse...you feel the extra weight tighter roads. The HD drives better down a highway, but the light duty gas better in the city. Towing hands down the HD is superior...I can tell the load is back there, but don't have to drive 'on edge' like in the max out tundra. Fuel economy is kinda mixed bag... the tundra got 16-18 MPG regular gas driving empty, but the HD is about the same or maybe worse yet is heavier and diesel cost more. Towing heavy in the gas it was 8-9 MPG, but towing the same it's 12-14 MPG on the diesel. My 2 cents is an HD or 3/4 or 1 ton is a must if tow heavy...everything else is adequate in the smaller truck. That said, I think a 1/2 ton truck is inadequate if you're wanting 4 doors crew cab... payload is too low and bed too small. If you're towing 8k+, you want an HD truck. They are rating for up to tow 20k now-a-days, but you can only do 14-15k to be under CDL limit and they'll handle that safely. I don't think you'll want to max or pull 20k with a 3/4 ton. A 1/2 ton at best should only be pull 7-8k safely despite a 10k rating...yes people have and it can actually pull 14k, but is isn't safe. It's just law of physics and weight...a bigger heavier truck with longer wheel base, higher load rating tires, bigger brakes, and beefier suspension handles what it can handle no matter what number you put on it or how powerful the engine is. What it really comes down to is, if you want to tow a decent amount, strongly consider an HD truck...if not towing or towing light, consider a mid or full-size truck (or maybe even compact).

If the transmission feels like its not shifting properly, you should do a re-learn for the adaptive transmission shift strategies....very simple really...just disconnect your battery terminals (both) and use a jumper wire across your B+ and Ground terminals and leave it like that for 30 mins....after that,reconnect (B+ always first) then drive for a continuous 10 miles so the transmission will learn your driving style and will get rid of the gear hunting issue..
