I was a lucky Lady the day I bought my Serger. I was returning yarn to Zellars,, ( Canada where I live. And at that time we all collected points. On the shelf behind the sales clerk sat a Serger. I asked why is it brand new and only costs $80.00? She told me a Lady bought it with her points and didn’t like it, so it was returned. So I quickly told her ITS SOLD. Hahaha. I sure was a lucky and greatfull Lady that day, and chose that day to return one ball of yarn. ( I went there to buy more yarn that day too. Such a happy story. ) Ps I’m still scared of it as I’m not good at it. ❤️❤️🇨🇦

I had to laugh at your deal at Zellers. I got a great deal just before Christmas on a Singer serger (not a deal like yours though!) at Canadian Tire of all places! I wasn’t actively looking for one but just happened to notice a special buy in their flyer. I quickly googled the model which ranked among the top 5 and the price was at least $100 cheaper than anywhere else! So I made a quick trip to the store and bought it! Now I am watching videos to learn more about it and how to use it. I started sewing again during Covid for something to do (I have made about 100 masks so far for family and friends). Now to try the serger!

Once more, this video demonstrates the value of "thoughtful creativity". Thank you! I have had a Janome serger for a couple of years; it's taken me some time to get used to it, and I still don't use it to its full potential, but I fully agree with everything you say about them. I would only add that, when you're working with a fabric that frays a lot and want to French seam your make, using the serger in the first step (wrong sides together) improves the durability of your final result and saves time (stitching and cutting simultaneously 😍) and you don't get to see the serged edge...

Yes, you definitely need a serger in a tailoring setup. My mom has been making dresses and shirts since young and she is now retired in her late 70s. I started picking up the hobby repairing my family's garments using an in-law's sewing machine. After trying out the machine, I decided to get one for myself. After using that I realised I couldn't get the professional look of edging with just the sewing machine. And my mom has an old Yamato industrial serger which I have used before but couldn't do a proper job of using it until I learned some serging techniques on youtube and made some singlets for my dad. But being a 3 decades old machine, it wasn't up to par. So after a few weeks of thinking if I should get a new serger (Since this is more a hobby and wasn't sure how long it will last) I decided to pull the trigger and got a Juki MO-644D serger. Best decision I have made. I think my set up is complete. Will start doing some T shirts and Polo shirts and stuff soon. This hobby is addictive. Lol!

I Loooove my Bernina serger/overlocker 😍❤️🥰 If you like sewing knits it’s so great. I still use a normal sewing machine for some knit finishes though. Cause you are so right Alisa, the machines compliment rather than replace each other. And yes you gotta make friends with your serger 😊 it’s temperamental, it’s snappy, can hurt you if you don’t treat it right, and you gotta work around it’s curiosities -But when you do make friends it’s a reliable, flexible, interesting and lovable friend! 🥰🧵😄🤓❤️

Just to add to the list of useful things a serger can do. I quilt and I like to wash most of my fabric. The problem that a serger solves is the raveling that fabric does in the washer. I have ordered the brother 1034DX and after watching several videos this one is the most informative. I will be serging the edges of my yardage before washing it and I can see a lot of time and anxiety lifting by doing so. Thank you for your wonderfully informative video.

Thank you! So helpful this information. I picked up a really nice older used Janine 634D for fifty bucks at my independent fabric store…it has sat for SIX MONTHS because as you say, I was afraid of the beast. Last night I decided to tackle threading it…took a bit of time the first time…but not terribly difficult…I just followed the diagram on the machine. I ran a chain..it worked! Then, the moment of truth: I tested a scrap. I was AMAZED how beautiful the finish was and ANGRY at myself for not diving in as soon as I purchased it 😂 I’ll be trying my first serger project this weekend. I have many thread colors available but with tee shirts and simple sewing I really don't bother to change colors that often. I only sew for family so it normally is not a big issue for me. Thank you for sharing this. I had my Brother 1034D for a few years now. But the serger you have is 1034DX, I'm surprised it doesn't have the lever to disengage the knife, like the older (I think), 1034D. That's a great idea to practice on scrap first....I sometimes forget to do that 🤦🏾♀️
@60gregma
3 жыл бұрын
When I was shopping for sergers, I was led to believe that the only difference between the 1034D and 1034DX was that the DX had an LED light. This is not the case. I pulled up the manual for the 1034DX and while it looks very similar to the 1034D, there are many differences. Some of the controls have been moved. In the case of the knife, instead of the slider on the left of the machine, there is a lever behind the looper door.

I use it to seal the raw edges of fabric before I wash it. I've seen heirloom sewing on a serger but have no need for that. If you can afford to get a Babylock self threading serger do it. I love serging, but I had a serger that (no exaggeration) took me 30 minutes to thread. If you did not thread it in the proper sequence you would have to start all over again. The Babylock saved the day. With the air threader for the loopers it took me no time at all. You also do not have to fool with tensions. Now I love serging again. No this is not sponsored by anyone. Wish it would have been because it is not cheap. If you have patience then any good serger will do. I just lack patience and want to get to work fast without any hassle.

@ThoughtfulCreativity
3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Suzanne! He he, I was going to tell the story but then my little one woke up from the nap - and man... you can't record anything with a 2-yr old being awake. But basically - the timing on my first serger got off slightly - my fault, I used it a lot for 5 yrs, we are talking almost every day and when the timing (how all elements work in a serger by looping the threads and being at th right place at the right time) got off I attempted to fix it myself instead bringing it to the repair shop right away. Then husband decided to take a look, and well - you know where it goes. So right before X-mas we had to take it to the shop because we had no hope for it anymore... I was a little upset that I had no serger, but nothing too major, however my husband felt really bad that he contributed to the further breakage of the machine and we even got into an argument because he would not listen to the fact that the sreger has to be threaded a certain way... so he went to Wal-mart and got me another serger, which I was going to return in a few weeks as soon as mine is fixed.... guess what, it took them 6 months.... they forgot about my serger and would not return the calls. So yeah, now I have 2 sergers :)

Just an ordinary nylon zipper. There are a few KZitem videos showing the process. My first was Abi's Den inserting it in a cushion back.

So would it be reasonable to get a a really high end, industrial sewing machine that only does straight stitch and basic Zig-zag and then a Serger for smaller garments and basic t shirts and hoodies? I sew some very tough fabrics for padded fencing jackets and occasionally some cute things for my dog. It's been tough to find a heavy duty machine, that is truly HEAVY Duty.

Hi, thank you for the video! It was very informative and I just bought my first serger. For some reason the threads won't come together and make the chain. They appear to do that and then just separate from themselves and the fabric. I have rethread MANY times, tried different settings and thread. Taken it to friends who have sergers and no one can figure out what is wrong. The upper and lower loopers are moving in front and in back of the needle (I have tried both A and B positions). Do you have any ideas? I have watched every youtube video and then some on my singer profinish...maybe I should have got a Brother :)

I have had this issue when I accidentally thread the machine out of order. For the threads to lock together properly, the placement of the threads has to be right. Recheck your manual to make sure. It’s not always just left to right or vice versa. In my case, I was using my mother’s server that I grew up using, but hadn’t used it in so long I forgot which order to thread it when I had to change colors.

Google the model of your serger and find a tutorial or a manual (most serger/sewing machine manuals are online now) on how to thread it.

I have the slightly older version of this sewing machine (CS6000i), and I don't have a serger (yet). I use the overcast stitch and overcast foot to get a nice edge finish. It really looks the same as the professional serged edges in my RTW garments, but, obviously, it's constructed differently.

Sergers actually can install a zipper. Granted not an invisible zip but on bags or even a center back exposed zipper!
@ThoughtfulCreativity
Жыл бұрын
You technically can if your zipper tape is wider than your serger foot, and most of the time you can't get close enough without cutting off the zipper tape, which then frays like crazy. Metal zippers and sergers are especially a dangerous combination, especially if you happen to sew over the metal accidentally you can throw off the timing of your serger which is then at east $100 in repairs - I don't recommend it to anyone.

I am sorry to bother you with question. I am using neighbors account. My name is Lisa. I would like buy serger too but it seems that you bought one you like best first and other one second but you don't like as best? Maybe you can explain to me about how you want to buy next serger. What you don't like about the first? I am making my clothes and clothes for granddaughter plus I get pay from customer for sewing at home. Things like fix and alter clothing.

i just bought a sewing machine, brother, and everything i want to make includes someone with a serger and i personally find it to be discouraging. I spent 200 bucks on sale for a machine to only find out that if you "really" want to "sew" you need another 300+ machine. There has to be a way for beginners to not have to spend 1,000 bucks to make quality garments. obviously this is an informational and pro-serger video, which is amazing. but until these things were made for the home no one had these techniques to make really amazing garments. to insinuate everyone who wants to make something needs one, is wrong. it's a luxury. a privilege to have a machine to finish and enclose edges in a way a professional garment is made. Just some input from a new sewer who can't find a quality video that doesn't include a 300+ additional machine. Honestly, it's discouraging for beginners like me.

Skallia, please do your research on how to finish seams without a serger, here's a video I have done on that topic, 5 ways how to finish seams, in fact I still do garments without using a serger - kzitem.info/news/bejne/sKqh03uvrZSle4o You do not have to have a serger to make clothes, I say it in almost every drafting and sewing video I have made. This video is dedicated to myths about sergers, we are not talking about sewing machines here, no one is insinuating that you need one, just explaining what it is for and how I use it and why I like it. To avoid discouragement in anything in life - just look up more information, do research, plenty of resources - library, internet, sewing classes, sewing magazines and even your sewing machine manual.

I have a very very old Husky lock serger and I have no idea how to thread it. There isn't a book that I can find for it and it's so very old. If I can get it to work I might get a newer modern one that has more settings to adjust this one does not as far as I can tell. It has never ever been used.

Annie If you can afford it, look for a more modern serger. The auto threading, knife options etc. really make the experience easier and therefore you will use it more often. I recently upgraded my sewing machine to a newer model (mine was an inexpensive model 30 years old) . I was amazed at the new features modern sewing machines offer. And I don't mean fancy stitches. Features that actually aide in sewing. I'm a happier, less frustrated sewist these days. By the way, I found my sewing machine on Craig's list for a bargain. As sewists upgrade, they will sell older models. That could be an affordable serger option for you.

@@denisedorsey2889 Thanks, I think I will do that. I have a very old computer sewing machine, top of the line 25 years ago. It has lots of nice features but I just bought myself a new mechanical sewing machine that has the same and more features and my old one and then some and I love it. It's so easy to use, does sewing, quilting and denim perfectly. I'm so happy that I got it.
