It is baffling to me that so many of the folks you interview think we have something against Russia. We love our peace and freedom in this country. I can speak my mind here. Unfortunately, Russians do not know their own history. In the period 1891-1893, the only country in the world that helped the Russian Empire with food shortages was the United States. Even the great Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky has two paintings on this theme. In 1922-1923, the same thing happened - the US was the only country that helped Russia with food shortages and thus saved 10 million from starvation. The entire industrial base in the USSR was created with the help of the USA, and in World War II the Lend Lease program helped the USSR win the war. After the collapse of the USSR, there was a shortage of food and medicine. And who is this country providing $50 billion in "Providing hope" program? USA, of course. Today, many Russians see China as their closest friend. Well, I have some very bad news for the Russians - China has no friends. China has either vassals or enemies.

Not saying they're right or well-informed, but people commenting in this thread as if what an average American thinks has any bearing on imperial policy are just as deluded. This is absolutely completely true. Why fight a war a war if it is cheaper/easier/faster/more reliable to just buy it? russia doesn't do value-add manufacturing very well. The rumor is that they are having trouble producing the right kind of steel to manufacture replacement barrels for their artillery. Will we buy the methane? Sure. Buy the iron or semi refined pig iron? Sure. Nickle, Chromium and Baltic Birch? OK. Masses of wheat? Yep. But anything that requires sophisticated manufacturing is of course not under consideration. Why send people to die if you can just buy the bulk raw resources? Who wants to pay for the reconstruction of russian infrastructure which is currently a mess anyway? A poll indicated that 20% of russians have no indoor toilet. Yeah, no one from the outside is chomping at the bit to fix that - except for maybe China.

The fact that even Japanese schools do not teach about the attack on Pearl Harbor......indicates that there is STILL a long way to go !
@andersgrassman6583
Жыл бұрын
@@urbanurchin5930 Well, also in the "West" we tend to forget to tell that Japan was under blockade, trying tpo starve the Japanese war effort in Asia. So the attack on Pearl Harbor was a completely logical attack from a war-waging megalomaniac imperialistic military regime ruling Japan at that time. The US just were to self confident, and also applied their own logic, instead of trying to think like the opponent. That's how the US was caught off guard in Pearl Harbor. So teaching "the whole story" isn't a strong point in a lot of western schools either. So the story can be told in another way, from a Japanese view. And it is. Japanese are extremely aware that the root core of the problem, was having a military almost dictatorship ruling Japan, with delusional imperialistic ideas of ruling the rest of South East Asia. (As if Japan seriously could congquer China?!? That was never going to happen.) Hence Japan up untill lately, has been so extremely pacifist and weary of any kind of military, and guarding democracy, that it has taken decades for the western democracy's to convince the Japanes people and government to step up militarily. Incidentally, pretty much eactly the same goes for Germany. And in both countries, arguing for larger military budgets has not been a winner in any elections. Only lately, with China's and Russia's agressive behaviour, has public opinion shifted somewhat. Unwillingly.

Therefore, with the civil war in China at that time between War Lords, Kuomintang, and Communists, Japan could envisage to control China, especially thank to a military superiority (and terrific atrocities, cf. @margotgorske6986 Do you really think that in the period of two or three hundred years, spanning feudal monarchy, communism and robber baron capitalism there were no changes in the culture and civil society of this country primarily known as Russia. There are in excess of 180 ethnic groups in Russia today. No changes? To dispel your claim, the architects of the Soviet Union were worried that unchecked Russian nationalism would wreck havoc in the new communist state so they created a 'Soviet' culture. It was manifest in the political system with very few 'Russians' ever becoming the leader of the USSR. S.'s poems would be easier to find if you provided us with his surname if you know it. Grossly stereotyping a demographic group by alluding to some unspoken character traits or flaws in usually the prelude to demonizing them so they can in the extreme be justifiably attacked and murdered. This is the opposite of @pamelagileno5483 compassionate post directing people's attention to the economic elites profiting from the death and destruction of a very provoked US Proxy War in Ukraine. I am not an American but have had a ring side seat at the newest variant of US anti-communist McCarthyist red-baiting that was used to explain why the contemptible and vile Hillary Clinton lost the presidential race for the White House to a Hollywood game show host. Her political party and the deep state used it to undermine his administration and his policy of rapprochement with the Russia because in his simple mind he did not see why the United States had to be the enemy of Russia. Ukraine has been destroyed, millions fleeing as refugees and hundreds of thousands dead because one evil woman could not look in the mirror and see the revulsive person the majority of Americans saw when they looked at her.

Well, as a Westerner I would have to admit I want to see Russia change soon. Very soon. Prior to Feb 2022 I thought Russia was on track to become part of the world of civilised nations. Now we all see it for what it is... and that cannot be in my world... our childrens world must not have a Russian Federation.

I grew up during the Cold War, in a Southern US city that manufactured rockets and missiles. Our parents and teachers told us over and over that the USSR had our city no. 1 on its Nuke target list. We felt so important, so vital to America's security. Then the Wall came down, the USSR dissolved and the Kremlin's real target list surfaced We weren't even in the top 1,000. That's how I feel when I hear these people say, "They want what we have."

You don't need to choose between an 'Eastern' or 'Western' direction. You can just be yourself where you are. And choose the path of openness to reality, and adult conversation that includes all perspectives, and respecting your own people and tapping into their broad wealth of perspectives, ideas, and talents.

East and West are simply code words for despotism vs. representation. Japan and S. Korea are as a far East, as East gets but they were "West" based on their values. China is "East" because it's another autocratic regime.

@@grasenwolken The majority of Russians live west of the Urals, they are western Europeans not Asians. To be more precise they are highly nationalistic Europeans, turning toward Asia won't work for them because the people there are just a bit brown for a long term relationship for average Russians. And frankly the way they're targeting the central Asian population of Russia to send to their deaths in Ukraine you can only wonder how long regions east of the Urals will still want to remain conquered lands of the Russian Empire.

I want to give those last two women a hug and shout "Yes sister! I am with you!" If it were up to us, all wars would cease immediately, and young men would go back to their families. I have never understood the thing about resources. What are these resources that the world can only get from Russia and that, it seems to these people, the US is obsessed with?
@RobespierreThePoof
Жыл бұрын
Primarily fossil fuels, of course. Beyond that, it's assumed that Russia has minerals and timber. Some assume there are rare earth minerals that may or may not actually be there. It's a propaganda ruse regardless. The US moved towards energy independence after the Iraq war because citizens of both parties demanded it. The US is far less reliant even on Middle East oil than previously. As for the other materials not available in the US, there's already longstanding trading relationships with suppliers that have a long history of friendlier relations with the US. It's just a Russian xenophobic conspiracy theory. China has more need for Russian resources than the US. Far more.
