When most people complain about prices with small businesses it’s because they don’t realise since it’s one or two people they are paying directly for TIME. They just look at the cost of materials (like great value cake mix, canned frosting for a bakery usually) and then at your price and go “hey! Small business is a lot higher! Greedy b*stards.” But they don’t take into account the hours spent, mixing the batter and frosting, designing, colouring the fondant and frosting, making the shapes, etc, because with big chains you don’t have to worry about paying each individual employee. But SBO’s don’t have that, they have to earn a living from what they do. I have a friend who runs a small business crocheting stuffed animals. One of her bigger plushies is a cow that costs around $42. 25 of that goes directly to materials because she can’t afford to buy in bulk from the manufacturer yet. It takes her 6 hours to make it. WHICH MEANS SHE MAKES LESS THAN 3 BUCKS AN HOUR!!! And people constantly complain about her prices being too high. Telling her she is greedy and that she is disappointing their children because they can’t afford it. If she payed herself minimum wage, not even living wage, it would be almost a hundred dollars per cow. Luckily she has a husband who helps support her financially and other, easier, products where she can give herself minimum wage plus materials or else she would be bankrupt.

I've hand made some home furnishings, like cushion covers etc. You do it for the enjoyment of the hobby, and to make something from your own design and choice of fabrics. It's cheaper to just buy something (probably made in Vietnam or somewhere where labor is cheap). Sewing is one of the first industries to leave developed countries and to be outsourced to developing nations (which can help those countries earn hard foreign currency and eventually raise the living standards for the people of that country). Even fabrics are more expensive to buy for the ordinary home sewer in developed countries. Manufacturers in other countries get bulk prices on fabrics made in cheaper countries, so they can buy fabrics, pay for the sewing labor, plus shipping and duties, and still make good profits on products which sell in developed countries at a cheaper price than the cost of making it for a home sewer there. Same goes for most other handcrafts.

And this is before taking into consideration that amount of time it takes to hone skills up to a marketable level and to also come up with a unique brand that makes you marketable too. So yeah, I’m not too pleased with people thinking all my hard work should be cheapened. It is a luxury and I’m aware I am creating a luxury product. My skills are oriented for it. If you want something cheaper, better to learn the skills to make it yourself. Nothing beats that in terms of affordability. I’m not going to be paid less per hour than minimum wage, just to make it “affordable” for a prospective customer. I have investment and labor costs to cover too. The only free paintings I make is for as wedding presents to VERY CLOSE family members, the ones who mean a great deal to me. Sometimes I make them for my siblings, but they are my siblings. And my mom, mostly for Mother’s Day (and also because I don’t have a performative like my siblings so this is the only way she can show off my skill as she likes to do with her children). @@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe that brings up the question of how many “luxuries” you can do without and not sacrifice quality of life. By that measure you can live on bread and water, and anything else is a luxury. Taken to its logical conclusion, everything that doesn’t strictly keep you barely alive from day to day is a luxury. It cheapens the conversation to contend that any treat whatsoever isn’t necessary. You live without enjoyment long enough, and it’s a life not worth living.

@@ThunderStruck15 You can't actually live on just bread and water since you'd develop multiple deficiencies including scurvy (lack of vitamin C). My father used to constantly give me spiels about how to him, as a child (we're talking 1940s), a roasted sweet potato or roasted chestnuts were a fantastic treat that they occasionally got. He would talk about how buying an orange or bananas (both imported in that country, and expensive in the 60s as it was still a developing country) was a big deal. He grew up in a time of widespread poverty and food shortages due to war, so anything beyond the basics were indeed a luxury. But that was the norm then for a majority of people. Roasted sweet potatoes or chestnuts collected from trees in the mountains were an occasional treat. Once upon a time in the West too, cake was in fact a luxury reserved for special occasions and festivals, such as Christmas. But in between, people didn't live on bread and water alone (or bread and ale, when ale became the standard as fresh water was often contaminated). They ate other foods, and obviously poorer people had less variety to choose from. If you're in dire poverty anywhere, life will be hard. But even so, they still think it's worth living and special foods alone does not make for life enjoyment (we're not talking about people who are literally on the edge of starvation here - that's not the case in the developed world for the poor). In any case, we're talking about decorated cakes whether purchased from somewhere like Costco, or a custom decorated cake from an owner operated small bakery. So yes, THAT kind of cake a luxury. But you can buy supermarket home brand boxed cake mixes for very cheap in a developed, modern nation such as the U.S. That should be as cheap as many other supermarket mass products such as a box of cereal like Kellogg's (breakfast cereals are a rip-off BTW so anyone on a budget should skip that in favor of rolled oats etc.) or supermarket bread. Affordable for anyone who can afford to shop for all their food needs at a supermarket and does not need to rely on food banks and donated food.

This is so well said!! This is a huge issue in other art spheres as well. People who aren't even commissioning have complained about prices for years, to varying degrees of hostility. And I think artists have slowly gotten better about pricing their time/skills fairly instead of keeping cost low even after years of improvement.

As someone who makes cakes as a hobby I would gladly pay "less affordable" prices. When they are unique to a customer there is a lot more thought and work that goes into it. The equipment is expensive, it's time consuming, and she is not just slapping the same frosting on the outside of a cake 20 times and selling it like the grocery store does.

Why do you only mention artists? After all, it's the working class that suffers when factories and jobs are then moved abroad to countries where labor is plentiful and very cheap and willing (no unions) to accept low wages (which often aren't low in their country, but in some cases they are low but with so many desperate to find work just to feed themselves, there's no shortage of workers ready to accept). And think of other jobs which can now be outsourced to cheaper cointries - call centers, for example, operating out of India or the Philippines. Or animation illustrators - in the days before CGI, when it was all done by hand (very labor intensive), I believe some American companies (maybe Disney?) did a lot of the hand drawing of cartoon cels in South Korea in the early 90s, where there were a lot of skilled cartoon artists and wages were lower, and exchange rates made it very attractive to cut costs by having production centers in Korea. I think there was a joke about it on "The Simpsons." Production moves where the economics dictate it. There used to be factories that made lots of products in the U.S.A. Most of them have since moved to China, or other countries. And where do you think clothing companies get their clothes sewn and finished?
@SY-ok2dq
2 жыл бұрын
Agree. No reason to lower prices because of a few whining customers. You don't see custom made furniture makers lowering their prices to Ikea levels do you? Or custom made clothes or shoes being sold at H&M prices. The reason why small owner/producers get this kinds of pressure is because it IS a single person, so there's precisely one person only to put pressure on and persuade. Hard to do when it's a small business of 10 or more people and the customer is just talking to the sales person out front.

I work in a grocery store bakery and still get people that complain about prices, even the pre-decorated cakes that I don't even decorate. I even get customers that throw a fit when I tell them that tiered cakes require a deposit. Like, it's a $70 cake, of course we would need a deposit, especially since we've made them and had people not pick them up and not even answer their phones when we call them. If price is an issue, there's boxed cake mix on the baking aisle and cupcake pans in housewares
@SY-ok2dq

Boxed cake mixes turn out very nice! Manufacturers have the equipment to mill the flour and ingredients very finely - finer than it's possible to do by sifting flour at home - making an airier, lighter cake. I don't understand why people worried about budgets don't just use boxed mixes and decorate that. Plenty of KZitem tutorials to follow for free. The cake might turn out ugly but it should still taste fine unless you truly messed it up. Live according to your budgets, folks! Don't beat down others for charging rates that you can't afford, but many others can. Clearly if it was so outrageously expensive and "not worth it" then nobody would buy those custom made and decorated cakes. Yet they're still in business and getting repeat orders, so what does that tell you?

That is true, extra work, extra time and extra ingriedients for sth that isn't neccesarry for comfortable life (not f. e. heart transplant) cost extra. My mom sometimes paints Orthodox icons and nobody is surprised when they cost around 250 dollars (the equivalent in our money) cause it is lot of work and expensive art supplies (elements of them are covered in gold leafs for example). If sb would ask me if her icons are affordable, I would think rather he is asking me "Is this something I can afford to buy for a special ocassion present or maybe the price is designed for millionaires?". Affirdable price is different for different goods. I would call $200 laptop affordable, but I wouldn't call $200 chocolate bar this way. There are still people who would buy $200 chocolate. Maybe it was the meaning of the question? Is it your cake" $200 chocolate bar" you don't even look for for real or "$20 chocolate bar" you can have this one time on your wedding? (cause for sure not $2, it would be probably losing money...)

You can't make a fair wage while also making it a high quality cake AND extravagantly custom. Some bakers/bakeries make more affordable, simple cakes that taste way better than grocery store, but it still won't be as cheap as grocery store. I made a 3 layer 9 in round dark chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and ganache, decorated with berries, gold stencil, and 4 ferrero rocher. I'm not a chocolate cake person but adore this cake it's so good. Ingredients alone cost $40-$50 even though the design was pretty simple it probably took about 3 hours. My area starting wage for a cake decorator goes for $16 hour. That would be $88-$98 for a nice cake that doesn't have an extravagant, custom design but still really expensive. I'd also like to add that there is something nostalgic and delicious in its own right about a box cake with can frosting and 99 cent sprinkles

One of our neighbors tried to convince him to sell similar frames at a craft fair, because "You could totally sell them for $40 and people would pay it". . . The materials cost more than $40. That's not even counting the cost of the tools in his woodshop, the hours he spent making the frames, or the fees he would have to pay to get a booth at a craft fair and accept credit card payments...
