What a gorgeous Newfie! Doberman deserved to win, though, he stood lovely.

I just adopted a Dobbie and when I took him to Vet he said that he hasn't seen a dobbie in almost 8-10 years.... surprising how this breed has not been in demand at all???? I love my Tan Dobbie with blue eyes, he's just sheer happiness. I mean if you can go for rot then why not Dobbie, which is more intelligent and easier to handle... I think the image produced by Hollywood and other perceptions has killed this breed

Amazing quality considering this was 20 years ago. I wish my vhs recordings were as good as this. If it wasn't for the 4:3 aspect picture instead of 16:9 I would think this was from a recent Crufts. Does anyone remember the fly on the wall style behind the scenes documentary that was aired about Crufts 1999?. It featured a number of exhibitors showing their dogs (Mike Gadsby was the main exhibitor featured). Peter Purvis did the voice over. I had it on tape but it's since been recorded over. At the end they showed clips of the Best in Show winner (Irish Setter) with Champagne Supernova by Oasis has the background music.

2006. So in all pre-2006 videos you can expect to see docked tails and cropped ears.

You ever seen a dog after an ear cropping or a tail docking? They could care less in my experience. I've had two dobermans cropped and docked. I even posted the ears on my current doberman with help from an AKC boxer show lady friend of mine. In my experience, castration is far more hard on a dog than cropped ears, definitely more rough than docking a tail. Its such a minor operation with minimal care(if you know what you're doing) that I don't comprehend the fuss. I had my doberman home after a few hours the same day and I'm pretty sure he didn't miss his ears or feel much pain. And I have enough experience with dogs to tell when they're in real pain. Now he looks sexy as fuck when he works, Yes I work my dogs...And I can read his ears better(not saying you can't read uncropped ears) And some hard working dogs need docked tails(more so than cropped ears) because they will break their tails depending on how intense their job is and how hard the tail is.

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, docking was banned in England and Wales. However an exemption was put in place for Spaniels, Terriers and Hunt, Point and Retrieve breeds that are used to work. Under the Regulations, a dog is officially a working dog if a vet has certified that the dog is likely to be used for work in connection with the following: (1) Law Enforcement (2) Activities of the armed force (3) Emergency Rescue (4) Lawful pest control (5) Lawful shooting of animals. Puppies of these types of dog may be docked by a veterinary surgeon providing this is done within the first five days of life, and that the owner (breeder) can prove that the puppies have been bred to work i.e. they must be able to show the vet either a gun licence or a letter from a land occupier which verifies that the owner's dogs work on his land. The puppies must also be microchipped by a veterinary surgeon. Following both of these procedures, the veterinary surgeon must sign certificates to say that the puppies were both docked and microchipped in accordance with the law.

Is crufts basically the Westminster Dog Show of the UK? I dont know much about dog shows or conformation. I am into working/performance based dogs.

We like to think that Westminster Dog Show is Crufts of the US ;) But yes - Crufts has Group Judging (and Best In Show), Agility, Flyball, Heelwork to Music and loads of Displays!

Thanks. I can see why. You guys probably invented the dog show. I would like to see a staffy bull or doberman win your show though. I have a dog that the Westminster or Crufts would cringe at or the KC or the AKC. A real game bred American Pit Bull Terrier with a pedigree traceable back to the mid 1800s. I firmly believe a good game bred APBT would whip every single dog in all your athletic events because they are still only bred for function. Ive seen probably a 45 lb dog run up over 4 meters up a straight wall and grab onto a firehose tug in an ADBA event show. Dog shows should be more about performance than looks, imo.

WHY oh WHY the docked tail. When will this insanity stop. Dobermans have beautiful tails. Thank goodness, one good thing about apparently south africa's KUSA is that you now show your dogs with full glorious tails.

Cropped ears and docked tails are no longer accepted in the show ring as of 2006. This video is old, that's why you see the docked tails. :)

Because it is prior to the 2006 docked tail/cropped ears ban
