I don't think there will ever be a better musician or human being on the old ball of mud. I have albums, tapes, CDs of Doc and I treasure them. I have tried to copy Doc's playing on the guitar for close to 40 years and I've learned a few of his tunes and when I'm down, I just play or listen to some Doc Watson. Thank you Doc!

Sadly while I cannot agree with Doc being the one that made this song famous, as I, nor anyone I know, have heard this version before, I can appreciate that it's the version that was famous for you. Sorry, you experienced that, but we all do. I am much older than you, and I can honestly say it isn't necessarily a generational gap at all. I jammed to music from eras way before mine. I know plenty of younglings that do the same. This version was recommended to me by my fiance's 12-year-old student. Don't lose faith with art nor generations; it's a part of life, and it is seldom that bleak.

There are an awful lot of great players - Tommy Emanuel, as John Davies mentions, but also jazz guitarist Frank Vignola, fingerpicker Harvey Reid, Canadian guitarist/multi-instrumentalist J. P. Of course you're right. There is no single greatest guitar player. Doc does have a special status though as an early pioneers who revealed what could be done with country/folk music on the acoustic flattop. I guess you have to be genre-specific with claims of greatness. Think of Robert Johnson in the 30's with Blues... As a player myself of Doc's type of music I'm endlessly blown away by his talent and taste!

Tommy Emanuel? A great technician for sure and has more technical chops than Doc but he's not the artist that Doc is. If you had said Chet Atkins (Tommy's inspiration) I could see your point. I'd bet $10 that Tommy would put Doc above him.
