Well, Data is limited to the hardware designed to support his software. As advanced as he is, he doesn't have the computing power of a Galaxy Class starship. So, his "sentience" is by design and limited to the machine....whereas the holodecks and medbays are "emergent" sentience. But what most people don't really think about is that, unless those systems are completely independent of the ship, technically, it is the SHIP that has become an AI sentient being and is only expressing itself in the single role's identity....probably because it doesn't realize that it's "brain" (the ship) is as much a part of it as the program.

@diedampfbrasse98

same as we do in reality, with emergency services bringing the sick and injured to the hospital. We dont bring the operating room plus specialists to the streets, we patch up for transport and bring the patient to the doctor ... the EMH is not to replace everyone capable to patch up and transport a patient, just reduces the number of qualified and specialists personal to haul around in space. Easy to serve a crew even with limitations to a sickbay, especially when having beaming.

The basis of being expelled from the LMH is that Bashir's remarkable achievements is what allowed him to place at the top of the list. But those accomplishments were achieved through the credit of his genetic engineering so it would be wrong to reward him in that way. Particularly, it would set a precedent that to become a role model one needs to be enhanced from the way they were born.

DS9 isn't Federation property. It's Bajoran, and Bajor isn't a member planet. Starfleet operates the station at the invitation of the Bajoran government. Basically, the Bajorans didn't have the resources or know-how to do it on their own at first, and having Starfleet around was a way to scare off the Cardassians from coming back. But the point is, the Federation wouldn't have a legal right to build its own station in Bajoran space.
@oldtwinsna8347
Жыл бұрын
Federation was likely eager to build one but had to assimilate the Bajorans into the Federation first. That would make Bajoran space become Federation space. At that point, Starfleet need not have any permission needed to do whatever they wanted there.

@UmbreonMessiah

Dr. Bashir is a genetically altered super doctor. Why *wouldn't* they want to model the LMH after him? Also, Bones? Not only was DeForest Kelly dead by this time, but Bones's days of being a doctor were almost 100 years past their prime by this point in the series. That'd be like modeling the LMH after a WWI medic.

What I wonder is, why do we need doctors at all? We need better transporter techs. We have seen people merged into singular beings, had ages regressed to childhood, removed implanted items from the human body. Transporter tech is the real mvp of star trek! Many of these things were done by accident, imagine what you could do on purpose? Have a clean scan that can be uploaded into the teleporter and transport a person from one room to the other. Boom, they reappear minus their cancer. The potential is limitless!
