a quote directly from Wikipedia (yes i check my fucking sources) The formation of freckles is caused by exposure to sunlight. The exposure to UV-B radiation activates melanocytes to increase melanin production, which can cause freckles to become darker and more visible. This means that one who has never developed freckles may develop them suddenly following extended exposure to sunlight.

Babies actually cant be born with freckles, but that doesn’t mean freckles = sun damage. They’re just a genetically determined response to UV exposure, which itself does cause sun damage. It’s no different than someone whose skin who instead gets slightly darker uniformly, as many babies and young children do in their first few years of life.

You're all correct: Ephelides describes a freckle that is flat and light brown or red and fades with a reduction of sun exposure. Ephelides are more common in those with light complexions, although they are found on people with a variety of skin tones. The regular use of sunblock can inhibit their development. Liver spots (also known as sunspots and lentigines) look like large freckles, but they form after years of exposure to the sun. Liver spots are more common in older people.

Please show me a non-photoshopped pic of a baby (before 1 year old) with freckles. Second, if you noticed he says, "Freckles are A (singular) sign of sun damage. Those freckles which people have genetically probably only appear or are noticeable after being in the Sun. My opinion on this tattoo? They are cute and everything on her because she's YOUNG. Trust me, when wrinkles set in she will re-think this decision. Like he said and meant: as we age freckles, being a sign of sun damage, aren't so cute anymore. If she decides to have a face lift those freckles are going to appear strange. I think the smarter way was what she was doing prior .... by drawing them on. They look cute now, but at 70 or 80? Not so much. IMO! 😮

Theres a lot of comments like this. Basically you were born with skin prone to sun damage, what this means is genetically your skin is not very resistant to sun (so im guessing you're on the paler side) so it is still sun damage and you might notice that it becomes more intense during summer months- which is a sign of damage. try to avoid direct sunlight more if you see this, and always wear sunscreen. Freckles arent ugly, but they're a sign of UV sensitivity and need to be protected more

Yeah I used to think people were born with freckles, but really it's a genetic predisposition to having spots of reduced melanin which are more susceptible to UV damage from the sun. So really they come during childhood, there are no freckled babies unless they've been exposed to the sun for an extended period of time which is not ever good for babies. Kind of crazy, I never knew this until this short made me google it lol.

@@g0desq Everyone's body has different resistance levels to Ultraviolet or UV damage from the sun. Caucasians are usually more vulnerable, but freckles can occur in other skin tones as well just less commonly. The freckles are spots inside your skin that has differing levels of melanin from the rest of your skin, so when the sun rays hit them they burn more easily, causing skin damage which causes their different coloration. Just think of it as areas that are more prone to being damaged from sunlight. Tans are basically purposeful damaging of your skin, and freckles are dots that tan easier practically. Hope that helps!

This is a VERY Korean opinion, and im familiar with that because my husband is Korean and he got one freckle during a holiday in SE Asia and now he thinks hes deformed or something. For Western European extracted people many children have freckles, so for us its associated with youthfulness and cuteness. Freckles are caused by uneven melanin distribution, basically certain parts tan more than others. So yes, if any level of darkening from sun exposure is damage he is technically right, but the attitude is a cultural thing.

Don’t try to “correct” a doctor dude. They’re not wrong, you are. And you yourself prove how much you don’t know what you’re talking about by using the world “melatonin” which is completely unrelated to freckles, and by claiming people are “born with” freckles, which is literally impossible. They can be genetic, but no one is born with them and they are in fact an indicator of sun damage, just like he said. Freckles are primarily due to sun exposure. They are medically known as Ephelides. Some people are more prone based on their genetics and Fitzpatrick type. It is very common for people to think they are born with them, but this is actually false. Unfortunately they are caused by sun damage and constant exposure to the sun, especially during childhood. When it comes to sun damage there are many different forms pigmentation; ephelides (freckles), solar lentigos or lentigines (age spots), melasma, etc.
