A this point in the story arc when I was watching first time around I really didn't know if Missy was faking it or not, but my gut instinct said she was really turning a corner. I think that's the real reason Moffat brought her back as a woman, to give her more empathy which her previous incaarnations lacked. Also the Master was driven mad/evil by the Time Lords signal (rhythm of four) as seen in the 'End of Time'. With that signal ended, there was no longer an infuriating force on his mind, and regenerating into Missy allowed her to slowly regain some sanity as well as grow a conscience, which is now starting to manifest itself... we shall see.

Yes, she knows. She says in this very video, that she knows when 12 leaves. It's not a matter of when, that she doesn't know, it's a matter of how. How things wrap up for the series. When Matt's final episode was on, she knew it was his last, but she didn't know how it would happen and what would be said. Those moments were what made it special, like the reading of the poem in the Christmas cracker about the eleventh hour ending. Her knowing it was his last episode made that so much more emotional.

@@JayceMaxwell At the beginning of The Time of the Doctor, I recall Sesska being optimistic that Matt Smith was still going to be the Doctor at the end of it. She even wore a bow tie for the occasion. Although she knew Peter Capaldi had been cast as the following incarnation of the Doctor, especially after viewing the previous episode, Sesska was oblivious that Eleven was about to regenerate, until after he reappeared in the TARDIS. I think it dawned on her particularly when Eleven remarked how everything you are is gone like breath on a mirror. Sesska started to get tearful at that point and openly cried when Eleven lifted his right hand and it was glowing with regeneration energy. That was the moment when she realised he was going, but she was very optimistic at the beginning of the episode. I think it hit her hard like a ton of bricks.

The interesting thing about this episode that even I hadn’t considered yet is how, even though Bill’s mom felt like a deus ex machina for a lot of people, it’s mainly due to the feeling of “How can the Doctor not do that but Bill can, and why with this?” What I hadn’t realized is that Bill’s construction of her mother was given more power because she was able to see her mom’s face. She has an imagined reality of her mother and that’s the reality she was able to supplant. If the Doctor could do the same, he would likely have been able to emotionally pull off the psychic overtaking. He’d just have to construct a person he cares deeply for who isn’t there. It’s a shame he doesn’t know Clara’s face.

I saw a comment somwhere (possibly on reddit) about Bill's mom and the deus ex machina she represented. People may be annoyed by it, but what they fail to see is the message the show convey: imagine you're a child, who lost one of their parent or may have never knew them, then this episode tells you that *despite the fact that they're gone, they are watching over you, protect you against the monsters and can give you the confidence to save the day* . I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I find it beautiful nonetheless.
@rocketcon
5 жыл бұрын
I completely understood the message. It fell flat because there wasn't enough foreshadowing, and they didn't do enough to show Bill's mother earlier in the season, hence why it seems so forced to have her play such a key role here. Bill's mum wasn't even a character, just a plot device. If Clara had been in this episode instead of Bill it would have worked better, as we got to see her parents in the rather touching "leaf" flashback scene.

A very tiny nitpick I have (which is major in my eyes) is the picture of Winston Churchill on the screens. They used the real Churchill, rather than the Churchill that exists in this universe played by Ian McNeice. It's tiny details like that which show that this is all one connected show. They managed it with the portrait of Queen Victoria in episode 9, by using the actress from Series 2, so why couldn't they stick a picture of Ian McNeice as Churchill in this episode? I appreciate that there are far greater things to be annoyed about but hey....
@elderwraith7600
5 жыл бұрын
+Adam re the McNeice Churchill, I think a case could be argued that it was entirely appropriate NOT to use an Image of McNeice, because of all the 'restart(ish)' stuff at the ends of series 5 and 6. Perhaps they _could_ have used a McNeice image but chose not to? If it's very important to you - and you say that it's major in your eyes - then I imagine that Moffat and/or writer Whithouse and/or director Wayne Yip could still be contacted somehow via the BBC to settle the question of whether it was a choice, or a post-production blooper (I imagine that it must have been in post-production that those screen montages were assembled).

I think the difference between Twelve/Clara vs Twelve/Bill's relationship is that Twelve/Clara was more Master/Apprentice while Twelve/Bill is more teacher/student. They're similar but not quite the same. An apprentice is learning to actually BE the same person (professionally) - i.e., Clara's arc to basically be the Doctor. (I do know that some thought that the trilogy was a bit uneven - perhaps not surprising since they didn't get the rewrites and aid that Steven Moffat usually gives the writers of the seasons. Sadly, his mother passed away during the writing of this trilogy, which quite obviously made it so that he couldn't give the same notes and such to the other two writers who did this trilogy.)

Honestly I forgot all about the scene where the doctor tricks her into shooting at him and then fake regenerates that actually scared me / actually made me very happy that they were going to regenerate a doctor mid season and actually make us worried about the doctor at any point in time but then they went back and turned it into a fake out to where yeah you're still not worried for the doctor at all during the middle of the season but it was that was a good scene that was a really good scene

Please do your best to avoid any spoilers. If you see this unspoilt your reactions will be incredible. I was so pleased to see you get your dose of Missy this episode. I love how when asked "Did you defeat them?" she says "I did.", rather than point out how obviously silly a question that was. Also there's that bit when she mimes/mouths "six months". Oh and lets make a note never to be unarmed in a forest with Missy. She can make a gun out of leaves. Five episodes to go!

You mentioned that you're interested in seeing if Missy was faking or really remorseful. To find out, I would recommend watching the next two episodes together before you see the last episode. Though in all fairness, you could watch all 3 back to back as the story arch carries on into the last episode.

If you love Nardole you will adore him in our British sketch show LITTLE BRITAIN .... part of a double act with David Walliams... loads of clips from the show online... Vicky Pollard being an iconic character .... Matt Lucas is a bit of a comic icon in the UK so yeah....go check him out :) and interesting seeing your view of series 10 as I feel i appreciate it a lot more in time and actually thought the faux regeneration scene here was jarring and out of character in major ways (and used in every trailer when Capaldi announced he was leaving they snuck sequences of him regenerating in each trailer from this episode... obviously purposeful) it is gutting series 10 is Capaldi's final one but what a way to go out... scarily enough 5 more episodes of his era left (and series 11 starts on sunday which i find surreal too!)

Last time we checked, the Monks showed their mettle, fear didn't work ( it costs the Secretary General his life ), strategy backfired ( the Generals lost their lives ) Bill consented..12 got his 👀 back....and we now on Monk Daylight Time...and 12 saying the Monks thwarted every threat imagined. " I'm the Doctor, and I approve this message... smiling". ( WTH 12?!? ) And so begins the conculsion to the Monk Trilogy with The Lie of The Land...or the Monks Cop Out ( I'll explain later ). The reunion of Bill and Nardole was hilarious, 2/3 of the Mod Squad in action. The meeting between Bill and 12 inside his ( not so ) holding cell was intense, at first, I thought 12 blamed Bill for allowing the Monks to a) get his sight back and b) take over the world and c)......there is no C. Oh well, two out of three ain't bad. That scene when Bill is displeased with his actions...and she 🔫 him.... I was like " got damn Bill, you killed 12, I SO don't like you"....Bill Kill 12, forget the other way around... and the regeneration...my heart was racing...😱!!!!....and then....( record scratches, in pieces ) I was like " WTH....how did he.....12 you son of a...... rockstar YOU!" THAT was a fake out for the ages.....well at least he pulled off better than 10's fake regeneration...10 freaking years ago in Journey's End ( putting it towards 10's severed 🤚..... mumbling..blast you Tennant, just kidding 😜... back to LOTL....). And that boat scene...and that laugh of his...get on with your bad ( good ) self Capaldi...got carried away there ( dam, this season is good... now to the resolution of the Vault....) Well, Extermis confirms it, it was Missy, and Michelle Gomez werked.... I mean WORKED it; she was owning the Vault scenes, calente through and through ( did 12 smiled again??! You sly dog you...ahem.. CONTINUING...) SO, the way to stop the Monks is to find a Central Base of Operations, and undo their hold on the world, simple right?!? When 12 said " Fake News Central", my mind was thinking...Fox News Channel...or something like that?... moving on ( 😵 ) when 12 made his attempt, my OWN mind was spinning all over the place, then it backfired, I was like " no,no,no, override it, override it, override it...aw, dang it, Monks 1- 12 0... shoot" Then it was Bill's turn, 12 imploring her not to do it, but she did. And then, thoughts on her Mom... those photos shown in The Pilot, and there she is, holding out her hand, a pure thought of love, of hope, of determination, and..... home run, grand slam...down goes the Monks' hold on humanity and the world, game over, brainwashing over, Bill wins, her Mom wins... Final Score: 12 3- Monks 1, the freedom was televised..... virally of course.( I TOLD you this conculsion got my brain and thoughts 😵 ). I love how 12 was saying how humanity must never fall to disbelief and propaganda in the wrong frame of mind....and yes, Bill did an A+ on her essay. And Missy, maybe she's beginning to accepting her faults... and start finding redemption within her... possibly, a truce can happen, let's hope so. Now, the reason I said The Monks Cop Out; they were making their intentions known in Extermis and The Pyramid at The End of the World,( and that's great, a strong beginning, a stronger middle.... ), but kinda unravelled themselves in Lie of The Land. Case in point, in a deleted scene, the Mod Squad and the Soldiers were trying to escape the ship without being detected by the Monks. One Monk was reaching down the floor with his hand hoping to feel their presence, and gave up, allowing the group to escape... quietly. That was a pulse quickening moment there... and after that, they threw the 🏳️, not the way you want to beat them, but you defeated them nevertheless, hence, the Cop Out.... almost done here. Conculsion, despite the Cop Out, this was a conculsion that was entertaining, but mind bending, the power of free will, brainwashing, propaganda, more brainwashing, some funny bits ( Bill: I'm going to beat the s.....( out of Nardole ). 12: the band (ie The Mod Squad of Time and Space ) is back together again ) and the REAL power to change the World, sometimes, a thought or even positive free will can free you from propaganda GONE wrong. The relationship between 12 and Bill really shines here, especially the holding cell scene, a true Teacher / Student friendship, and Nardole did good too. Overall, I give the Monk Trilogy an 7, if the Monks had that final push of defiancy and giving 12 one final battle for control of the World inside the Center of the Pyramid, I would give it a 9, I love your reaction Sesska, nothing to boggle the mind with. And we are 3/4 through with Season 10, and Season 11's starting this Sunday at 10:45am PDT / 1:45pm where you are, but I'm working that day, so, hopefully, I'll be home in time to see it, it comes on at 5 and replays it again at 8 here in Southern California, 🤞 for the former ( and the latter ) time. Eight episodes down, five to go...and a new Season... and Doctor is on the horizon..... Sunday. Looking forward to seeing the reminder of Season 10's reactions from you. 😃 👋. Oh, buy a Carmel Apple, fall's NOT fall without them....or a jug of apple cider, or pumpkin spice coffee... isn't free will fun?

Genuinely surprised you enjoyed this. It’s nice to see people enjoying things that others did not. I personally hate this episode (and this arc in general) but it’s good when you see others getting enjoyment out of them. The fake-out regeneration seems to be universally despised though. Utterly pointless and meaningless and seemed to exist only so they could stick it into the trailer. They seemed to treat it so seriously too, but I don’t know anyone watching it live at the time who actually fell for it (since we knew Capaldi was in the entire series)…Bill literally intended to KILL the Doctor. She didn't even know what regeneration was, she actively shot-to-kill.

Adam this was my favorite part of the three parter, love saves all endings make me sick but this one was well done, I loved the music, and the visuals and the emotion so I let this one slide. I also love the doctors speech at the end and the fake out regeneration music is brilliant just a shame it makes no logical sense

I didn't see the point in the fake-out regeneration, since Bill doesn't even know what regeneration is or looks like, but I didn't mind Bill shooting to kill. The Doctor, in her eyes, had gone from being her best friend to being a tyrannical dictator. It makes sense.

@Adam A sloppy excuse of an ending for a poorly, and very sloppy written three-parter. This could have easily been a two-parter if the writing had been much tighter and all the filler chopped out. It's pretty obvious that it was stretched out for lack of stories ideas. The fake-out regeneration was nothing more than a cheap ploy to keep people interested in a borderline crap series. The entire series was filled with bad writing and endless loose ends. It's no wonder Capaldi wanted out. He was absolutely wasted in the part.
@Adam-nb6im

Trev L It's not even really a proper two/three/four-parter. It's just the middle third of the series (Oxygen to Lie of the Land) are separate stories all connected by a plot thread. But it's things like this which alienates causal viewers.

I don't want to pick nits, but when I first saw this episode, when they entered the vault, there was something that screamed at me that that wasn't right. I wasn't sure what it was for quite a while and it took a few rewatches for me to get it. Its a big design flaw for me. For weeks, they've been going downstairs into a basement level and chatting at the door. They finally enter it... and the room they enter, which should be in the basement... has very large windows. It just... strains the premise. She should be underground. People can look in those windows and see her. It feels like this secret vault is just out in the open. I guess I'm making too much of this, but it just felt wrong.

Officially it's three stories rather than a single three-parter. They may be closely linked with a story arc running through them, but each episode resolves its own plot before setting up the next one. You could also extend that to _Oxygen_ before then. It's also worth noting that they all had different writers. This was the episode I liked least of series 10. I just thought the pacing felt a bit off. Also, the fake regeneration was clearly there just for the shock factor. The resolution feels very similar to _The Rings of Akhaten,_ though that's not necessarily a bad thing.
