I love how we take for granted the ‘checklist’ of things that a companion generally learns all at once, or within about two episodes. Bigger on the inside, Time War and last of the Time Lords (no longer), sonic screwdriver, Daleks, TARDIS translation matrix, etc… I remember back in 2007/8 when 'the talk’ would be had about a lot of these things with the new companion, to the point where it was practically a trope. But we’re ten episodes in now and Bill has only just learned about the TARDIS translation matrix, and she learned about it by talking to somebody else (a Roman soldier) from a different time and making a deduction, rather than having it told TO her. It’s subtle little reinventions of the general Doctor Who formula that have made Series 10 rather special. The weight and drama and emotion of the adventure, the alliance formed between two former-enemies casting aside their differences (the Romans and Picts, the Doctor and Missy - and this thematically follows on from the previous episode, with the humans and Ice Warriors), making a great sacrifice to face a greater threat… it lives on across time in a song - as faint music on a hillside, surrounded by strange images etched into the rocks a long time ago, and the call of a crow. All the events of the episode are wrapped up within that little moment, in those bookend scenes with the little girl in the present day who can still hear the music. It’s always such a treat when Doctor Who does episodes such as these and this was a really poetic episode for Capaldi before his final story...

Interesting fact: This episode was written by Rona Munro, who previously wrote the final story of the classic era in 1989. That makes her the only person to write for both the classic and modern show. About Rory: He was a plastic centurion from 102 AD to 1996, in an alternate timeline. The ninth legion disappeared sometime after 108 AD. However he was at Stonehenge (near Salisbury, South-West England) and they were in Scotland.

Here we are. "It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for." One of the series' best finales and a tour de force performance from Peter Capaldi. He will be remembered as one of the great Doctors and his era will only grow in stature over the coming years. A shame it wasn't a season or two longer, but the work, the craft and skill on display is treasured. Looking forward to the next three weeks, especially, given some of your comments. And then there's Jodie Whittaker, another of Britain's great talents. Can't wait for December. Thanks for another great, thoughful, emotional reaction.

Yay! For Scotland! This season has no scottish people in it whatsoever .When in previous seasons we've had the 10th Doctor, Amy Pond, 12th Doctor, Missy, Captain Jack and Steven Moffat. The only time there was not a scottish person involved in an episode was back in 2005 with the ninth doctor. Thats crazy! For 13 years the scots have been on doctor who! And now there is no scottish representation, Can it even be doctor who without a scot on it seeing as the show has never been without it?

I just want to say on the subject of this episode that it has one of my favourite ever exchanges of dialogue in 'Doctor Who' history: the conversation on sexual orientation between Bill and Lucius and how Bill isn't regarded as "modern" by Roman cultural standards. It entirely flips the narrative on sexuality, and is historically accurate to boot! The Romans were extremely liberal when it came to their partners, and bi/pansexuality was the norm. And that's the other really smart aspect of that conversation - it's not even a debate on straight vs. gay, it's one on monosexuality vs. polysexuality. It's absolutely sodding genius and I give Rona Monroe top marks for making it work on so many levels. Anyways. This episode was the worst performing of series 10. It's unfortunate because I really do enjoy it, at least a little more than I do "Smile" or "Knock Knock." I'm just beside myself with excitement for the finale, now!!!
@MrZagloba

What Bill refers to as an "auto-translate" didn't just come into the show with 'The Christmas Invasion". Back in Classic Who it is also referenced. For example, in the Season 14 story 'The Masque of Mandragora', Four and Sarah Jane talk about The Timelord's Gift.

I think this is quite a sweet episode. The writer of this, Rona Munro, actually also wrote an episode for Classic Who. The very last episode of Classic Who. Fun fact! The scene with Missy and Twelve at the end though. It gets to me every time. As you say, Gomez is just such an AMAZING actress, and her chemistry with Capaldi is fantastic. I love Missy with all my heart, and that scene, even if it's short, just makes this an episode I come back to on occasion. It's so good. Also really enjoyed your conversation about fear and bravery in this. Completely agree.

It functions on a buuunch of levels, digs deep into Ace (and all of us who grew up in the bland suburbs) and who she is, has an incredible last performance by Anthony Ainley, and really is just so neatly sci-fi/magical realism/urban realism. Rona Basically Rona Munro is awesome.

Nardole saying: "Welcome to ourrr Laand" in that bad Scottish accent is rather funny. Its a good enough sort of story but when The Doctor says "The gate will be open as long as the sunlight is on it" - I always think 'so draw a curtain over it then'. Perhaps there needed to be people stopping it opening again though so, fair enough. I loved how one of Missy's catch phrases is just "Hello" said in that amazing way. Michelle Gomez is certainly the most mesmeric actress in Dr Who. I don't think there is an ordinary scene with her in. Maybe joint first place with Alex Kingston.

It was hard to know if missy is lying or not. Because she has the power to fake a tear and act all sad and gain the doctors trust. But at the same time it seems so real and when the doctor wasn’t looking she didn’t pull a smile or anything to indicate she was lying. Do it was hard for me to determine if she was lying or not. As of the rest of this episode. I liked bills friendship with the Romans and I liked nardoles relationship with the soldiers. The creature was underdeveloped and the story Seems a little dull. Though I quite liked the crow theory I found that pretty cool and funny. The music this episode was great. And different to what we were used to. I liked the creatures design though I wish the plot was better. Overall I rate this a 6.2/10

The episode wasn't as good as the rest of the season. It's not terrible, like some comments might make you believe, but it's not as good as the rest of Season 10. That being said, that final scene with the Doctor and Missy was fantastic. I think, if it wasn't for how amazing the season's final episodes were (and the Christmas Special), it might not be looked at quite so harshly. I'd compare it to Hell Bent in the sense that, neither episode was good, but it's cast in an even worse light by being next to one of the best episodes in the over fifty year history of the show. There are episodes that are genuinely irredeemably awful, next to fantastic episodes (World War 3 next to Dalek, The Twin Dilemma next to The Caves of Androzani), but I don't think this episode deserves nearly as much scorn as it gets.

Awww... I think I've seen a lot of disagreement about this one. I would never call it the best of the season, but I love the discussion of bravery in it, the setting, the fun flavor of the mythical mystical past, the idea of the teenage heroes as well as their performances, and of course Nardole gets to shine wonderfully in it. It's a delightful sort of B+ to me. Lovely episode in a lovely season. But... yeah the ending is incredible. And next week is AMAAAAAZING.
@meropetied

@Aunchient Pistol Hell Bent is so great. I also get people being disappointed by several things in it. Gallifrey just doesn't get the adventure it deserved at that point, nor is there a definitive answer to the hybrid arc. It's left open for interpretation. Interesting. But it's also an amazingly mysterious and fun and rewarding finale instead of all definitive and often ridiculous payoffs (a la previous Moffat season finales). It's definitely my favorite season finale of Moffat's after The Big Bang (Doctor Falls coming in a close third place).

A puzzling mystery.... so what REALLY did happen to the rest of the Roman 5th Legion...and the warrior Scottsmen......and woman? There were some funny moments between 12 and Nardole ( I guess crows really do eat popcorn ). And there were some touching moments too, like how 12 utilizing his teaching skills to teach both warring parties to accept the responsibilities, and face their fears. In the end, they decided to go to the portal and keep the Eaters at Bay......for eternity....such bravery. That touching moment between 12 and Missy was emotional, could 12 really guide Missy to redemption, and potentially join the Mod Squad facing what lies ahead......the unknown....and believe me Sesska.... it's going to rock you to the core....it was for me. The Eaters of Light was the CALM before the REAL storm, not too fast paced a bit meh at times ( the Eaters were downplayed somewhat, could've been a little bit better as the foes here ), but once again, 12 weaving his magic in teaching us about facing fears, accepting responsibilities and no matter what the outcome, hope always shines through, a little hard to resist, but hey, you want to be victorious right?.... everybody knows that... even me. Another fantastic reaction Sesska, now get some rest... we're saving Capaldi's best for last....10 down, 3 to go....and these 3 Episodes won't disappoint you at all ( just make sure you bring a box of tissues just in case.... what the hell, bring it, you'll see what we mean ). Until Episode 11....🎼shine a little light on me, the dark can't touch me, shine a little light on me, I'll carry on 🎶.....and Missy too 🎵....😁.

Time moves slower in the portal so they probably fought it for a a couple minutes in their time but it was centuries for the outside world.

cameraphone120 I remember that bit but there was something about how many seconds equals how many years in real life and the end result didn’t make sense as the Doctor being in the portal for seconds was only two days in real time, so everyone fighting at the same time in the portal should only really pass a couple of weeks in real time so they’d never be able to be successful

Hi. Love your Doctor Who reactions! Before you start season 11 we would love to see you react to Comic Relief Doctor Who: The Curse Of Fatal Death kzitem.info/news/bejne/paVj3XiGqHVneoI It was made in the hiatus between the 1996 movie and the Christopher Ecclestone era. A very funny tribute to ‘classic Who’ with some great british comedians and written by Steven Moffat (and a few things they correctly predicted would happen in ‘New Who’) I’m sure you will love it!
