I love how the dust really shows what "Pyramids of Mars" can mostly only tell. Total Universal destruction. Sutekh's total ego and need to 'know' everything being his undoing is also great, one of my favourite villain tropes. I also liked, at the end, the Doctor gets rids of Sutekh by finishing what the 4th Doctor started, sending him into oblivion down the time vortex. Loved this story overall.

A few notes - the cgi dog was really cool though I would've maybe preferred if sutekh were in human form. I think he was a more menacing villain in pyramids of mars - I don't totally buy the explanation of Ruby's mom. I think she is an ordinary woman, but my theory is that mrs flood created the whole mystery about her as a plan to defeat sutekh. - thematically I really like how sutekh represents the Doctor's fear that they bring death everywhere they go. It ties back all the way to "Rose" where the conspiracy theorist guy says his one constant companion is death.

1. Snow seems to be continuing into Season 2/15 with Ms. Flood 2. Doctor was there to see it, right in front of her, and that's why the memory changed, because he arrived, so she had someone who could see her point. 3. He didn't duplicate the Tardis, he sent it forward in time, after 14 had decked it out with the jukebox and the ramp. Same tardis, different time.

I’m thinking maybe Ruby having snow was a misdirect as the Doctor was there everytime it snowed (73 yards..snows in wales all the time, in the UNIT holodeck she was alone but it was a playback on the vhs). It’s all d as o timey wimey and some clever twists.
@ugolomb

The script kept suggesting a different solution for the pointing (not just in this episode -- this goes back to "Space Babies"): "The memory changed". Having Louise Miller point at the sign to name Ruby makes no sense. But in "The Church on Ruby Road", we didn't see her pointing at all -- that only started happening in "Space Babies", and the Doctor specifically mentioned the memory changing. So a better solution would have been, Louise didn't point at all -- but her memory-image did. Some entity interfered with the memory of that night (another commenter, on another review of this episode, suggested that it was the Tardis herself, throwing a false scent to mislead Sutekh).

The main difficulty - and it was always going to happen - is that, with Sutekh under restraint, 'Pyramids of Mars' could tease what might happen if he got free. But when you actually have to show that, the whole story grinds to a halt. I can totally understand why people were mad about the solution, because this is meant to be a God-like being. What he actually ends up becoming is a plot device (the literal God in the machinery of the script) to provide some closure for Ruby. So while I enjoyed the episode, I think that's a valid criticism. Another interesting point is, if the Doctor et al were being kept alive for the purposes of revealing the big secret, that surely means 14 and Donna were out there somewhere. Obviously they're out of sync because otherwise 15 would not have to ask how Rose's 'uncle' was - any more than 12 had to ask who was on the phone to Clara in Deep Breath.

I’m one of the minority of people who loved this conclusion. I do think it would have benefitted from being longer. Totally agree about the Doctor needing a bit more time for the whole being the monster bit. In Pyramids of Mars he talks about how Horus wouldn’t kill Sutekh because it would mean they were no better than he. In regards to the pointing, I think we needed a shot of her face breaking down in tears. Carla told us she was crying when she left her baby. I can imagine the dramatic pointing would work if they were inconsolably crying. I loved that Ruby’s mum was just an ‘ordinary’ woman. No-one is more special than anyone else. People are only important because we invest significance in them. I think that’s clever writing (and there’s also a political subtext there too in classic RTD style) Russell has been also keen to let fans know that Ruby’s story is far from over.

I'm sorry Rocco isn't doing so well! And I hope you both are better, in terms of sleep and wellness, soon! All my love to you both! I so fully agree with you about Ruby's Mum. I think NewWho has relied far too often on the idea of a character that is super important: Rose, as Bad Wolf; Martha Jones, as the woman who walked the Earth; and so on and so forth -- so it's nice for not only Ruby's Mum to turn out normal, but Ruby too (I might eat those words in a future series, but for now, I'm loving it for this reason). Some people have expressed disappointment, and I think a lot of that is that people missed explanations that were given to us. Either that, or they expected the finale to go some other different way, and they are unhappy because those ideas were not met? I dunno. Regarding the pointing: thinking on it as I'm writing this comment, the only thing I can think is that she thinks The Doctor is someone from the church and thus she points toward the lamppost, which just happens to be in a similar direction to him, in the hopes that under that assumption, he will be able to name Ruby in her absence. Of course, I don't think she's paying attention to whether or not The Doctor will be there in a few moments time -- why would she? Again I'm sorry things haven't been going well in your personal life, and I really hope they improve for you! Thank you for this reaction! we brought up a lot about susan in this and added some fun lore to her mom hasnt even been born yet so thats planting the seed that is something we could yet to see? as well as maybe a return of susan? though at the same time can we even trust the doctor that susans parents havent been born yet? we can assume that at least 100 years if not more of the doctors memories are locked away in the watch at the core of the tardis so who knows what secrets are in there. I really still would have loved them to do a season or 2 in the past maybe even with Doctor Ruth as she was kind of amazing. The timeless child opened the door for some potential past forgotten doctor stories. i guess its a matter of where they want to put the money. focusing on modern day and social and political issues of today seems more important than just writing stories. still kinda feel like you could do both? like imo dot and bubble was such a good example of an episode that had subtle bits of racism that went overlooked till the end when the penny drops. That episode also dealing with classism. I feel like all of 13s political episodes were just badly done. Plus we had an episode on pollution.... mainly carbon emissions i guess with orphan 55? then just 3 episodes later we get Praxeus about plastic pollution. Almost feel like they could have maybe merged those plots. And Rosa was kinda weird for me just for the fact it felt very much like a quantum leap episode. also i feel like david bradley did such an amazing job portraying the 1st doctor that its almost criminal they didnt use him to film all the missing stories for the 1st doctor. i think the fans would probably appreciate it more having them try and refilm all the lost stories and they could probably even try to mimic the old crappy effects so its not too jarring for people watching it in order

I don’t understand the people saying this episode was "underwhelming,” I thought it was brilliant. Ruby’s family being “normal" was a highlight for me. Not to get too personal, but I am also adopted. I know nothing of my biological family, not even a name. My situation is actually remarkably similar to Ruby's. So, as someone who was once an orphan, I find the whole "orphan grows up and discovers themself to be related to someone spectacular" trope to be a bit dull and tired. The fact that anyone ordinary can ALSO be someone spectacular was a brilliant and refreshing take. Russell T Davies handled Ruby's adoption plot thread incredibly well. Yes, there was build up with Ruby making it snow and “having a song within her,” but it wasn’t misleading us. This is a story of the power of manifestation and belief. Ruby's mother was special because she was special to Ruby. RTD is saying "this person doesn’t have to be IMPORTANT to be important." I found that very beautiful and creative. Again, i thought he handled the adoption plot line brilliantly. It’s akin to the Rey reveal in The Last Jedi (stay with me), when we find out that Rey's parents were no one “special.” Rise of Skywalker retcons aside, I love the idea that a character can come from nothing and become something great. So, circling back to Doctor Who, would you rather Ruby have been “related to Palpatine," so to speak? I would argue that would have been more of a let down. Instead, what we got was so much more profound and beautiful. That’s why i really loved how Ruby and her mother were handled. Also… The Doctor saving all of time and space from death itself... using just a spoon and a whistle… FANTASTIC. It doesn't get more Doctor Who than that.

I like some aspects of this episode, but there are so many unanswered questions and it didn’t seem to connect with the rest of the series in my opinion. It had the potential to delve deeper, but I felt like it was just skimmed over (the 73 yards reference for example). And why is Sutekh in Ncuti’s Tardis specifically, and not 14s? I would’ve liked an explanation on that because they could’ve either split into two separate entities, or it could mean that Ncuti’s Tardis is the original, but if I remember correctly, his Tardis came out of the other… 🧐🤯 I’m probably thinking too deep into that one, but it seems to be the case for a lot of plot points this series.

"I love the fact that Sutekh is like I'm going to bring death and destruction, and everything will cease to exist but first... I need the tea! 💅" lol, that's why I love watching your reactions. I also liked that Ruby's mom was an "ordinary" human because not every companion needs an alien, magical or special background, but the explanation of how she was important because people made her important doesn't explain the snow and the song that came from Ruby that saved her from Maestro. I agree with the pointing, she could just leave a note with the name, it was the Doctor connecting dots out of nowhere, who was there to catch that and name Ruby after that road?. I enjoyed the season and N'cuti speeches but logic was lacking. I think we didn't see enough of 15th and Ruby friendship to feel that she really changed his live or to even miss her. I'll miss Millie, loved her performances but Ruby as a character I still don't feel connection to her.

Even though I found Sutekh’s defeat too easy, and Ruby’s Mum naming her by pointing very odd - the final third was beautifully done. Just the raw, human elements are perfect. Something Russell T Davies excels at. I think if you cast the slight weak points aside, this is a fantastic finale!

@@scottgodfrey7118 That's an interesting theory. If the Tardis started to become fully aware that Sutekh was attached to it around the time of Wild Blue Yonder, Perhaps the Tardis (which is sentient remember) starts using Time Vortex Energy and hijacks back it's Perception Filters that is being manipulated by Sutekh to create the beginnings of a "Mythos" the moment it arrives at the Church, having become aware of Ruby's story during the run up to the Church Showdown. From then on, everybody who encounters Ruby and interacts with her starts feeding the "Mythos" making it more powerful to the point where it starts to effect reality around her when endangered.

I'd go with a coincidence - her mother was hoping/praying that Ruby be her baby's name, and the people at the church named her after the street - but it's a coincidence that would make Ruby feel good, so of course the Doctor lays it on thick.

I think Ruby could have been named Ruby by her mother before being left at the church. I remember after she left Ruby there, she cried. I think she wanted to at least remember where the church was located. It was snowing hard so in the process of trying to make out what the sign read she pointed at it. I'm not sure if she cried after pointing but if that was the case I think she cried seeing her daughter's name on the sign. I think it was another coincidence that Ruby was left at Ruby Road, which may have attracted the goblins even more.

Its probably nitpicking but I do wonder if they thought about Ruby almost instantly using "My real mom" as soon as she found her. Like yeah accurate but often adopted people especially nearly 20 year olds would probably say Other Mom or Bio Mom. If it was he saying "Real mom" for the benefit of us then I think we're smart enough to have inferred the mom who would be in reference to her bio dad ya know? Heck many families nowadays can have several moms but again im nitpicking but it was kind of like a nice chocolate bar and then seeing the expiration date at the end of the last bite.

RTD discusses this on the commentary. He said he went back and forth on that line, but figured that Ruby has only just met her bio mum and hasn't figured out how to refer to her yet, so she defaults to "real mum" in that moment without really thinking about it. (Not mom; she's British).

I found this two-part finale to be good but not great. My main issue with this finale is that it needed to be an hour long, much like with pretty much every story in this season. Have the first 15 minutes of this episode be the conclusion of The Legend of Ruby Sunday and have the cliffhanger be the Doctor screaming out of the Remembered TARDIS as the entire universe is decimated. Then add 20 minutes to this one to give Sutekh more screentime, expand the on the universe's decimation and actually flesh out the entire solution to saving the universe. The pieces are there but the pacing was too damn fast. I actually don't mind the revelation on Ruby's mother, but the season-long mystery build-up was poorly thought out in retrospect (Why was her mother mysteriously hooded and shadowed in the CCTV footage? How can Ruby make snow and Christmas music happen around her? Why couldn't Davina McCall or the Villengard ambulance uncover her ordinary heritage?). Overall, even though I found the whole thing to be less than the sum of its parts, I did have fun nonetheless.

Either way its someone who new the doctor as his first regeneration on Gallifrey not as the 'Timeless child' as the timeless child was a girl (still annoyed the retconned Hartnell as first regeneration).
